PETER H. NILSSON – Signs Of Myself (2021) Review

ENGLISH REVIEW INCLUDED BELOW

We never surrender, needs time to remember”.  Maravilloso…

“Just Like That” me encanta.

“When I look in your eyes for the first time tonight…do you feel what I feel baby”.

ENGLISH REVIEW

It all started on March 4th when I had the pleasure of contacting the great Javier «Ojotigre» Survivor, famed and acclaimed general manager of the huge podcast Justrock, to thank him for playing one of our songs on his podcast. A few days later Javier put me on the track of «Little american dream» by a Swedish composer I didn’t know and then, last 13.03.21, published on facebook an unusual (for me of course) and brief (how strange coming from Ojotigre) review mentioning the protagonist of today’s review: Peter H Nilsson.

An exclusive post of what was going to be, in this 2021, one of the most exciting listens on a personal basis and that, unfortunately, I didn’t have the pleasure to enjoy when it was released back in 2018. I rushed to contact him and show him my joy and excitement for having discovered this great artist and composer in him. I told him that everything could be summarized in one word from his same album: «Timeless» because his music really pierced my heart, it was timeless and eternal, because of the compactness of his sound, the exquisite simplicity of his proposal and his dreamy melodies that, despite being under the name of Peter H. Nilsson; does not show, in any case, that role of leader of the band that could be expected but, plain and simple, it is shown as a musician who wants to make his songs the main added value and where no member stands out above the other (despite the fact that he has a great touch of guitar and show himself as a staunch fan of Mr. Steve Lukather («Luke» in the usual slang with which we know him and so the same Peter names).

With impatience I have been waiting for news about his next release and Peter, with an overwhelming kindness, was explaining me little details about it, from the songs he still had to mix for lack of bass track; to the expected date of mixing and final mastering at Panic Studios with May Thomas… although he also explained me that he was looking forward to go to Spain and go to Montmeló since he is a great fan of speed and F1 in particular.

It is really wonderful to be able to meet such like-minded people along the way, so close and humble. This is Peter H. Nilsson

After this introduction, which I had a moral obligation to do, let’s get down to the subject at hand. Peter H. Nilsson’s band is a mix of musicians from Europe and the USA: Chris Biano on vocals (Nashville), Patrik Adiels on bass and Darrell Nutt on drums. In this case, for this work, Peter has recruited the band «Blåsemafian» (Mafia horns) for the arrangements and exchange of ideas on the song «Signs of myself», and our compatriot Antonio Morales, member of the Spanish band «The Brisks» founded in Ceuta back in the 60’s, on keyboards. Antonio plays on four of the eleven tracks of this great album. Peter Nilsson also plays and arranges the keyboards on all the tracks in addition to his exceptional work on the 6 strings.

We start with the first track of the album called «Higher Ground» where, after an introduction of synthesizers by Antonio, Peter opens the can with a very melodic and atmospheric solo in a Dare vibe. It’s very short since it only lasts 01.05 but it’s just the starting signal and, making a simile to F1, Peter is starting to warm up the engines…

«Fire & thunder» is a beautiful theme where all the instruments sound perfectly, where everything is in its place, there is no need to add more ingredients to the menu that he offers us… because it’s all on point. It opens with a keyboard melody that reminds me of the more intimate Drive She Said tracks from their Excellerator album. «Something at last» could be a good example to compare but it’s still a furtive dig as it doesn’t take long to change the pace when Mr. Biano’s voice enters the fray. I love Chris’s voice, who said that for this style it was necessary to overcome the 4 ocatavas to thrill? It is evident that Chris’s voice fits perfectly with the sonority of the band and, best of all, makes his voice the main flagship for the band’s immediate recognition. I love Darrell Nutt’s contribution to the band, he has great taste in playing and a tremendous rhythmic touch and impressive tempo management. Surely Docs Fs of El condensarock de fluzo could offer us a more technical and professional opinion of the performance of this great drummer.  Peter has made the right choice with his signing. Patrik Adiels brings to the band that consistency in the rhythmic base giving support to Chris’ voice when he starts to sing the first verse…very great. After the first chorus we can appreciate the first keyboard arrangements played by Peter Nilsson, who shows an exquisite taste in the whole song. A change of tone, after singing the chorus for the second time, gives way to a great solo by Peter where I even perceived the influence of Neal Schon himself. It is really beautiful. It is AOR of 24 carats of pure sound 80’s and TOTO is very present in this theme and in general in all this work of the Swedish based in Goteborg.

After the previous hit Peter dares with a new sonority in the introduction of the theme «Time to remember». Precisely this is the second intervention of Antonio who plays the initial introduction with synthesizer. When the drums start up, Peter takes over the keyboards again, doing an exceptional job in terms of arrangements and composition. I find an evolution with respect to the previous album in positive where Peter tries to experiment with new sounds and in this theme is especially appreciated; to the margin of the more than denoted contribution of Darrell that really goes out. It is a very melancholic theme and again the almost spoken voice of Chris transports us in a subtle way until arriving at that «We never surrender, needs time to remember».  Wonderful…

«Can’t get over you» is a song that Peter already released on Spotify in 2020 as a single. Again the tone of bassist Patrik is galloping along with the melody to be interpreted by Chris. It is one of the most rocking that we can find on this album, knowing beforehand that Peter H. Nilsson opts for more melodic rock and pop oriented themes but with an exquisiteness beyond any doubt. This song is very much in the Joseph Williams solo style. Very good solo of Peter where you can notice that splendid and arduous work in the execution and composition. He takes care of every detail thoroughly.

«Ships burning in the night» again gives us back that melancholy with wonderful keyboard arrangements by Antonio (violin stabs) throughout the song. The theme begins as a ballad to Grand piano interpreted by Peter Nilsson to then flow into an AOR theme of great level. I love the sound of Darrell’s drums. I think it deserves a special mention. A session drummer of denoted experience, producer and sound engineer for 25 years and recording and playing with members of legendary bands like YES, AC/DC, Bad company, The Moody blues…among others. Peter is like Flavio Briatore when it comes to recruiting musicians….

«Signs of myself» is the jewel of the album among all this pile of diamonds shining around him. The inclusion of Mafia Horns reminds me of the best era of Chicago but well, TOTO is still present…very present and that as always is a very good news. It’s a  spectacular theme that takes me back to the time of the Farenheit album from 1986. The solo is incredible, short but concise, with a very «Luke» touch. What a great song Peter…

«Learning to let go» has that sonority of the best TOTO ballads, «I will remember» could be a good simile. Again the most sentimental and melancholic side of this band is shown (something that was already appreciated in their previous work). Antonio is this time in charge of the Grand piano in which even Peter asked him to play it Don Henley style. It’s not to be missed. Again I have to say that Chris is splendid in his vocal performance with those answers in the chorus and that way of transmitting during the whole song. It gives me goosebumps….

«Breathe» starts with a very Supertramp sound that grabs you instantly and then drifts into an AOR stunner. The progression of the song is excellent from beginning to end. Again to highlight Peter’s arrangements throughout the song and Darrell’s class that keeps that incredible touch. Peter’s solo again wonderful and the end of the song shows how compact this band is and the class that all the musicians have. I’d rather you listen to it and find out for yourselves.

I love «Just like that». Again when Chris starts singing I feel that he is transmitting a lot to me. It must be that peculiar way of intoning where it seems like he is talking to you while he sings. The chorus is «happy» but melodic with touches of American pop rock a la 7th heaven. Again it shows the identity of this band that in spite of doing melodic rock like many other bands, it shows its own personality and it is recognized at the first listen.

«The first time» also shows a more «rock» side, like «Can’t get over you», always talking about the general concept of the album which, as I have indicated, is oriented to pop/melodic rock. That chorus will stick to you like a good super-glue. It’s trademark chorus. Offbeat and spoken, melodic and melancholy at the same time. «When I look in your eyes for the first time tonight…do you feel what I feel baby». It’s breathtaking.

And he ends the album with the track «Can’t come down» which Peter Nilsson released in 2019. Another great track.  If you are reading this review my dear Javier from BarnaAor well here you are going to find that American country rock touch that you are so passionate about. Darrell’s touch on drums again masterful as well as those curious keyboard arrangements by Antonio that really add a lot to the whole.

«Little american dream» was a very difficult piece to beat but with this «Signs of myself» Peter manages to match the bar. There are no ups and downs on this album. Let’s hope Peter H Nilsson gets the recognition he deserves. He already has my special admiration as a person. Now it only remains for me to wish him the greatest success with the band that bears his name and encourage him to continue composing more works of this stature with the sensitivity and taste that characterizes him and to provide us, as a transmitting engine, with the deepest emotions when listening to his songs. We could not miss a last mention to F1… here there is no pit stop… Peter H. Nilsson leader from start to finish!

Congratulations Peter H. Nilsson for your great work!
