THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA – Aeromantic II (2021) Review

ENGLISH REVIEW INCLUDED BELOW

Original a tope.

Grande.

¡Feliz vuelo, amigos!

ENGLISH REVIEW

The Night Flight Orchestra (TNFO) or «La orquesta del vuelo nocturno» as it could be translated into English, saw the sky in Sweden for the first time in 2007 and so far they have a few flights behind them, besides having released half a dozen albums. The one we are dealing with now is the sixth of them.

I think it is important for you to know the origin of the band’s name to understand the breakdown of the album. Well, I will tell you that a few weeks ago I had the great pleasure of interviewing the singer of the band, Björn Strid, and, thanks to him I discovered the origin of the name of the band and many more things that I will tell you (You can read this interview on our website if you are interested here).

Björn (singer) and David Andersson (guitar) started together in the Death metal band Soilwork and it seems that one of the things they both loved to do when flying was to have a few drinks together on the plane at night, when everything was quiet and the rest of the world was sleeping, for them it was a different emotion and it started to become something they enjoyed more and more, hence they decided to start this new group that would have nothing to do with the band they played in (and still do) and chose to call it The Night Flight Orchestra.

Once you know this, boys and girls, get ready to start the flight. You are welcomed to this trip by the captain Björn Strid and the rest of the crew: David Andersson (guitar), Sebastian Forslund (guitar), Jonas Källsbäck (drums), Sharlee D’Angelo (bass) and the stewardesses Anna-Mia Bonde and Anna Brygård who help the captain with their voices in every necessary moment.

Ladies and gentlemen passengers, fasten your seat belts, put your seats upright and fold your tray tables because we are about to take off for Sweden – we are flying through the sky!

With boarding pass in hand we welcome Violent Indigo, which from the feeling I get with what I know of the band, is reminiscent of their other albums, with a seventies touch and a transitional bridge that opens the doors to this new album. Something closer to previous works to 2020, perhaps more monotonous theme with more repetitive chorus with which they have wanted to show us that indigo blue of the sky about to get dark. Beautiful color.

Midnight Marvelous is our hand luggage, there, up in the cabin, above our heads. Here they’re already giving us a hint that they are (according to the name of the song) the «midnight marvel», with a rhythm marked by drums and guitar with touches still from the 70’s, which is going to be the general tone of what awaits us. But… be careful, we still have a long journey ahead of us and many surprises. This is just the appetizer.

We continue climbing a few feet towards the sky and we spend a little decade with How Long (I do not know if they mean how long the trip lasts) that already with its initial rhythm of unstoppable aerobic keyboard mark us the ’80s. Tireless keys throughout the song that make us put on Eva Nasarre’s tights and move our feet relentlessly in the style of the movie Flash Dance or Footloose. I’m breathless from dancing so much.

If someone is not able to snap their fingers with Burn for me, please tell me. Continuous rhythm of footwork with a different instrument playing (don’t ask me, I’m not going to give it all away, am I? Find out for yourselves). Fingers on piano keys in a crazy way, with some shy guitar solo and chorus that make this song one of the most moving of the album. Original to the top.

We return a little to the time of ABBA with Chardonnay Nights and that to me it seems to me in occasions that it says «Saturday Nights» to play to the misleading, so, just in case, I wear the white suit of John Travolta (as it takes the singer) I look at the revolving ball of the ceiling and I plant myself in the middle of the track of the discotheque pointing with the finger to the sky and to the ground. Will it be coincidence or is everything thinking?

With a more forceful chorus and bringing something more seriousness in the continuity of its rhythms comes Change that does not fail to combine characteristics of the «hippies» era with the early decade of «Naranjito». With this one we stop halfway to keep breathing.

Amber Through A Window, a song that seems to me very «Journey» passes, for my taste a little unnoticed in the album. It has pauses in its melody, which are surely necessary, but do not make it the best of the compendium.

I Will Try, presents us with a more sensual rhythm base and that to me, personally, reminds me of Madonna’s True Blue, a great song of the popera of the great musical era. Attention to the rhythmic base in the background. Great.

With an Asian rhythm at the beginning almost funny, You Belong To The Night is presented to us. How these people are able to mix styles and give them totally different touches almost to the point of satire, I can’t explain it to myself. They are capable of doing it with all the respect and affection in the world. Another one of those to move your fingers and hands like a Geisha.

Zodiac reminds me of those movies that show those «clubs» of the 70’s, and when I put club in quotation marks I put it for a reason, everyone can interpret it as they want …. Ladies with little clothes and short «afro» hair, whispers in the background…, descending bass rhythm… to the listener’s choice.

Here comes one of the best moments of the celestial journey, White Jeans. Rhythm from the beginning to the end, non stop. Those «white jeans» that make us move non-stop and that, if the video is great, the argument of the song improves it. According to what the vocalist (Björn) told me, it is a tribute to the Drag Queen who lived years ago the repression of not being able to bring to light their «preferences» and who, nowadays, are encouraged to «take out of the closet all their most intimate garments» without any fear of homophobic or sexist reprisals. There you have it, to give a twist to our sometimes archaic ideas, right?

We arrive at the landing track with keyboards, sounds and huge choruses. Track full of quite hidden romanticism, but perceptible for all those who want to hear in Moonlight Skies the loving half-time they haven’t heard in the whole album. Worthy of choreography, full of love and that puts the finishing touch to this aerial adventure of The Night Flight Orchestra. Sublime. They say goodbye leaving us all wanting to travel this flight again and again.

For me it has been short, I would take off once again to go through the turbulence of the plane and continue listening to this album that can not go unnoticed for all those who long for good music and good compositions of the ’70s, everything danceable of the ’80s along with an aesthetic in their shows, plus an originality, in my opinion, never seen in any band so far. I have certainly not landed with excess baggage, I am left with the feeling of having traveled first class.

It is clear that, as Björn, the singer, told me in our interview, this is their most rocking, super melodic, organic and cinematic album to date. I invite you to put on your headphones and feel these sounds in the most internal way possible. This is the movie soundtrack we will never see this year.

As you may have read, I have not given you many clues (the control tower has everything coded), this is only for those who appreciate details, for those who carry the rhythm in their bodies and who are able to take off their jackets while dancing when they get home.

You can’t miss an opportunity like this one to feel totally original melodies and until now not perceived in any kind of band of this style. I don’t think you will find this fusion in any kind of band. Happy flying, friends! Happy cinematic vuely!
