ROBIN RED – Robin Red (2021) Review

ENGLISH REVIEW

Right off the bat and without much digression, I openly recommend the album we are going to break down below: Robin Red – Robin Red (2021 Frontiers Music r.s.l.).

First of all, because it seems to me a plate with an infectious sincerity that not only harbors a collection of songs with a composition far above the current average, but also evokes an unfeigned, unfeigned and completely riven past feeling in the best of the eighties as far as melodic Hard Rock, Aor and Melodic Rock is concerned.

Secondly, I suggest it for successive listens because, in spite of its frontality, it is gaining in importance with small added details, nothing convoluted, but that do denote implication with the themes, an attachment to the compositions that is translated, I reiterate, in an uncommon honesty, where each one of the instruments shines with its own light, but where I must make a special mention to the elegant guitars and their different interpretations by an outstanding Dave Dalone of H.E.A.T., who also takes care of synthesizers, percussion and added backing vocals.

To conclude, I emphasize again this new musical offering because it represents the first solo work by Robin Red, that is, Robin Eriksson, formidable singer and bassist of the revolutionary DEGREED, which a priori already grants a feeling of quality inherent to the work exhibited by the artist during the last years. This feeling is confirmed throughout the twelve tracks that he delivers us with a particularity: Robin takes a step backwards in his first release, a step towards the nostalgia of a movement that was tattooed in the DNA of the lovers of the eighties, instead of walking with the five steps that together with his band lead them into a stylistic regeneration of which few formations can boast. Their enviable originality stays in the bosom of their home to wrap us with a comfortable wool blanket whose warmth, in precious and less torn samples of vocal talent, greatly alleviates the lack of personality of a multitude of highly recognized bands.

Don’t Leave Me (With A Broken Heart) opens fire in an exercise of melodic Hard Rock that decades ago would have become an anthem thanks to its powerful chorus and all its model tricks of an unrepeatable era.

From here we oscillate between themes of greater power with others more of character of author melodic Rock and Aor mode. In the first side we face direct hooks to the chin like (I’m) A Bad Habbit, Can’t Get Enough or Livin’Dead with classic rock reminiscences that could pass for people like WHITESNAKE, FOREIGNER, GLENN HUGHES in the time of «From Now On» or the wake of FREE/BAD COMPANY sifted to the style FM or BRYAN ADAMS (very patent in many of the choruses used with the shadow of Steve Overland) and with the presentiality of the already mentioned H. E.A.T. (Everlyn, although more paused, summarizes these last references with clarity and adding a certain Denander feeling in a quite elegant way).

Within the Adult Oriented Rock, Freedom with its GIANT-like beginning, the marked key strokes and its sweet chorus leaves us a great taste that extends to Heart Of Stone (with stellar female backing vocals by Petra Eriksson), Nitelife (keyboards with a great protagonism and that in its solo emulate a delicious saxophone) whose elegance in its clean guitars intoxicates me or the simple to assimilate Head Over Heels.

Midnight Rain is by itself a jewel sculpted between electric and acoustic guitars and a beautiful melancholic chorus, as well as Reason To Survive, more naked and intimate and that breathes an evocative breath of hope to the use of the great unplugged songs of CINDERELLA, EXTREME, TESLA, MR BIG or even, in this more personal facet and as we will see at the end of the album, JIMMY BARNES.

He closes his homonymous album with Living For and its classic atmosphere, «Bluesy», very well achieved by the guitars and the organ of Jona Tee (H.E.A.T.) not to mention the warmth that Robin imprints in his heartfelt way of singing. A huge farewell.

The line-up is completed by Mats Eriksson (DEGREED) on drums, Joan Eriksson on piano and backing vocals and Eric Modin on percussion, all of them providing the strength that the songs need to be rounded.

Great album by ROBIN RED, who despite having a more than secure future, finds time to green their roots and sprout a sap that tastes like manna when, although everything is said and done, uses a cordial, polite and disqualified language, if you allow it and let it pass, among the jargon that grows like a swarm watered by misleading advertising of many fellow promotions to which more attention is paid.
