MOTORJESUS – Hellbreaker (2021) Review

ENGLISH REVIEW

«A bastard crossbreed heir of the best Rock – Metal – Punk MOTÖRHEAD tradition that they grease completely in a steamroller with the boldness of the most visceral THE ALMIGHTY of the nineties, the forcefulness of the most metal MUSTACH related to their more atmospheric and commercial expression, and an overflowing passion for the NWOBHM».

A good slap in the face, with all the intention of raising your spirits and feeling energetic enough to face practically whatever the wind wants to throw in your face with the new album by the Germans MOTORJESUS.

On their sixth full-length album, Hellbreaker, the band formerly known as The Shitheadz, not only demonstrate that their personality is, album by album, gaining more and more and that makes it more and more difficult to pigeonhole them in a specific genre, a fact that is a gift at present.

They count on the fantastic vocalist Chris Birx to spit with rage every passage he takes as an authentic narrator of realities from his irate pulpit, as well as to add brushstrokes of hermetic melody (certainly well aligned and that even reminded me slightly of SOILWORK’s «Speed») when the band prevents monotony from making an appearance in their bastard crossbreed, heir to the best Rock – Metal – Punk tradition MOTÖRHEAD at the base. That’s when they create different intensities, some more melodic, others with more Groove, even dramatically ambient (the initial Drive Through Fire, Battlezone) that completely grease a steamroller with the nerve of the most visceral THE ALMIGHTY of the nineties (Dead Rising that has a bridge and chorus in full harmony with some amphetamine FOO FIGHTERS or Car Wars), the forcefulness of the most metal MUSTACH (Back To The Bullet) related to their more atmospheric and commercial expression (Beyond The Grave, Firebreather, Black Hole Overload) and an overflowing passion for the NWOBHM that we are pleasantly inoculated with gutting solos, with guitars bent in full contact with IRON MAIDEN and other standards of the time (Hellbreaker, Lawgiver). The renewal brought to the band by their new signing on the six strings Patrick Wassenberg is noticeable, pure unleashed violence.

The production of the same and Dan Swanö at Watermountain Studio is exquisite and gives a power of punch that suits the band perfectly, besides maturing their sound without adulteration, which helps them to grow widely with the different concerns that invite them to introduce, when their will requests it, from acoustic segments, arpeggiated of relative backlighting and a whole collection of choruses that are an aguardentosa ode in each one of their songs. And I have to remark, once again, that each of the eleven tracks on this stupendous album are built with basic foundations, reformed with noble materials and put on sale, thanks to their undeniable and timely hymnic hook, at a luxury price.

The only haven of peace you will find on this album is the acoustic outro accompanied by simplistic percussion, far from the drum kit, of the beautiful The Outrun, which has only a minimal placebo effect of relaxation because it hooks perfectly with the need to hit «play» again on your player to receive in a single and immediate intake, the blast of a block of inseparable and easily absorbed songs that will leave you as agitated as a «punching ball» with the monkey unleashed.

Not a minute is missing or surplus to this wonderful album, which becomes a monumental slab, an ideal complement to perform a moon landing and reduce to shards the glass behind which we exhibit the hidden primal instinct that we carry inside. Don’t forget that you need to go hunting to balance your inner demons, so throw the leash in the air, unleash the animal inside you and get in touch with this basic nature called Hellbreaker.
