ENGLISH REVIEW

I greatly admire all those artists who reinvent genres or whose musical integration crosses the barriers of the previously perceived, creating new disturbing and exciting sensations, fresh air to continue the dream. But, damn it! I also admire those who have the balls to keep pulling on a rope attached to the bumper of a DeLorean that can’t quite get started and is more of a collector’s item than an automobile per se. I admire, because I know they do it to drag it to an updated workshop to restore bodywork, paint and get its engine roaring and tire burning again. This rope, however, has been too much manipulated and this has caused that it has been tightened too much until it seems, rather, a funambulism number where the purpose is to ignite again the authentic flame of the most hooligan Hard Rock, walking on the edge of his legacy, while maintaining the type, raising his head to spit insolently to the sky and not to fall into the void of immediate oblivion.

When I discovered the Austrians MÄDHOUSE, I knew from the first moment that they had the necessary poison to intoxicate the nostalgic ones of the mid-eighties and the first three years of the wasted decade of the nineties as far as inappropriate Rock is concerned. I bet on them on The Rock Angels Radio Show and now, under the quality protective label that is ROAR! Rock Of Angels Records, and with changes in their line-up, we get our hands on their second album, Bad Habits, a truth like a temple after their debut Money Talks Bullshit Walks.

Vocalist Tommy Lovelace, guitarist Mikky Stixx and bassist Rickey Dee remain in the lineup, leaving the door open for new members Thommy Black on guitar and Casey Jean Eiszenman on drumsticks, introducing a fresh dose of outlaw energy.

The album was produced, recorded and mastered by Mikki Stixx himself at Metalforge Studios in Vienna between 2020 and early 2021, falling on him also the weight of the cover and the photos of the plastic, come on, a real artistic challenge at all levels which makes it clear that they knew what they wanted and they jumped on it as you will see after your first and recommended listening. The sound of the album is pure uncontainable adrenaline with a quite successful balance, really good and crushing, although I have to put my first «but», the very length exhibited. In my opinion, fifteen songs that follow a pattern already patented with genius by famous bands, can be too scorching a drink at the beginning, which can lead us to relativize the predisposition for further ingestions.

However, by introducing the sting of MÄDHOUSE in our veins, the trip is highly pleasant with its cocktail, harmful to health, of Metallic Glam, dirty Hard Rock and Sleazy slumming with license to crush uprisings under the supervision of a baseball bat of the latest model, chrome-plated, glitter-plated, leather-gloved and studded, taking on even greater dimensions with the attitude of glamorous criminals super-charged with synthetic drugs that they exude.

This second album by the Austrians is a cannon of laser flashes where the SKID ROW of their first album (doesn’t the Bang Bang solo sound like the Big Guns of «Sabo»? Well, or almost all of the song…) melt with the metallized MÖTLEY CRÜE and even with the rehabilitated abuses after passing through Dr. Feelgood’s office (listen to the final arrangements of First Lick Then Stick and tell me that I’m not losing my mind…) all this thrown up with a wild voice but that at the same time knows how to caress the melody, in the purest style of a Stephen Pearcy version 3.0, in a radioactive RATT and with a certain NITRO effect. The choruses also have to be pointed out because they push their tremendous choruses or cheer their outbursts of a gang just out of jail, with a desire to mess, although sometimes they let themselves be seduced by the sweet POISON or the processed DEF LEPPARD.

Yes, nothing new under the sun, but so well executed and so assimilated as a way of life that it is impossible not to enjoy it in sips, once you have chosen your favorite songs from the wide catalog they have recorded for worshipers of the glory stage of the style. I for one will take Atomic Love, the melodic Pure Oxytocin, the carded Heavy Metal Creed, Say Nothing At All suckled by WARRANT and the DOKKEN sweats that soak parts of the beauty/beast that is Love To Hate.

I must also add that when they step on the pedal and, with that current sound of the production, they acquire more personality and are unstoppable as you can hear in Sick Of It All, Itch To Scratch or Fake It Till You Make It.

A very good album set with a lot of attitude, good compositions and attractive interpretations, whose greatest achievement is to know how to translate the native language of the band’s influences, but whose only sin is to obviate the typical motto, as true as death, that less is more. Choose from the large number of compositions your personal «playlist» and let your worn out classic treasures rest.
