BLAZE BAYLEY – War Within Me (2021) Review

ENGLISH REVIEW INCLUDED BELOW

ENGLISH REVIEW

«At this point in his career, Blaze probably offers us his best work. A «War Within Me» loaded with Heavy Metal that doesn’t let up for a moment in its little more than 40 minutes of duration. Full of powerful songs and excellent melodies that demonstrate a masterful compositional state.

If someone doesn’t give this album the chance it deserves… they really don’t know what they are missing».

INTRODUCTION:

Blaze Bayley’s name is well known in the Metal world, for better or for worse, and his popularity reached its peak when in 1994 he joined IRON MAIDEN as lead vocalist replacing Bruce Dickinson. Five years that were not exempt of controversy with «The X Factor» and «Virtual XI» but that in any case, did not leave us exempt of the maiden, and that is worth more than anything.

But when we talk about Blaze Bayley, we have to talk about his name because the road he has traveled has been enormous. A musical journey full of albums in his more than 36 years on the boards: with Wolfsbane (his first band), the aforementioned with Iron Maiden, and then….todo is a gibberish of visas, economy and changes of formation that I will not enter if they were under the name of Blaze, Blaze Bayley Band or Blaze Bayley. I think that for the fans it is the same thing and his career since the departure of Iron Maiden can be put all in the same bag.

So, since the beginnings with an unexpected album as powerful and direct as «Silicon Messiah» in 2000, Blaze has not stopped offering us Heavy Metal albums of a high quality in composition and execution, surprising both friends and strangers by always conforming a silent metal path, without much noise, but full of a Heavy Metal worthy of great bands of the style.

KNOT:

What does Blaze offer us in this new work?

Well, the usual but better done, partly because of the time that, due to the pandemic, he has been able to perfect it and correct details. An album with a dozen songs, each one better than the last.

The formation of this disc headed by Blaze Bayley to the voice is completed with Christopher Appleton (guitar) that also composes together with Blaze, Martin Mcnee (drums) and Karl Schramm (bass).

The truth is that all the members are at a tremendous level in terms of execution, highlighting Appleton with some rock solos in each song that are a delight. It is just in his solo interventions where the songs breathe and shed their skin.

The songs have the branches loaded with leaves of current Heavy Metal but without excessive flowers that recharge them (which personally I personally like so much, let it go straight), but if we go down to the roots we will find that it is nourished by a Power Metal close to the last era of Helloween with Deris and some iron maidenesque passages that are revealed with longing in the epic of some songs.

«War Within Me», «303» or «The Power of Nikola Tesla» are clear examples of that Power Metal influence with some drums and bass going to pound, some incredibly well composed guitars with great melodies, and Bayley’s voice still sounding the same as always. And apart from Blaze’s role as composer (which is amazing), it is worth mentioning that his voice may or may not be liked, but it is distinctive, characteristic and incredibly personal.

The album has epic songs with Maiden-like intros that burst into a powerful and serious Heavy Metal like few others. This is the case of «Warrior» or «The Unstoppable Stephen Hawking» that start reminding the Maiden in their most progressive songs, but then wake you up with the most powerful claw of Metal. Appleton’s riffs and the sound he has brought out of his guitar is perfect to support the rhythmic base offered by bass and drums. You can see by far the class that this man, who also leads his band Absolva, possesses.

«18 Flights» is perhaps the most purely heavy song on the album, as is «The Dream of Alan Turing» which has an exquisite decadent riff in its chorus. Both of them play with the similarity of being in the middle of the album and making it go beyond the halfway mark without lowering the intensity one bit.

Mention, for me, require the stupendous «Pull Yourself Up» and «Witches Night», my favorites of the album. Perhaps for being the most diverse in composition or perhaps for having those choruses that break and in which the guitars are absolutely huge creating melodies. They sustain for themselves all the good things of the album with solos, again I emphasize again, incredibly rocking and melodic. They are the perfect mix of those leaves and nutrients I was talking about before and make the album, without a doubt, the best of their career.

And the emotional «Every Storm Ends», because that is the exact word: emotional. A ballad that goes straight to your heart because of the sensitivity and charisma that Blaze offers in his way of singing, adorned with an acoustic guitar that acts as a cane. Little by little the song becomes big to finish with strength in a monument created with calm, passion and based on the best building materials.

UNLABELLED:

At this point in his career, Blaze probably offers us his best work. A «War Within Me» loaded with Heavy Metal that does not falter for a moment in its little more than 40 minutes of duration. Full of powerful songs and excellent melodies that demonstrate a compositional state of 10. Well managed and placed throughout the album.

An album that will continue to keep him in a simple and comfortable row within the Heavy conglomerate, but that under no circumstances is a second line album. The album has everything to be one of the best albums within the style this 2021.

«War Within Me» is a tremendous album, pity that this ball of lead that takes chained of its passage in Iron Maiden in a convulsive period (for some) follows him after more than 20 years, and that weighs that there are people who do not give him the opportunity that deserves the disc …. they do not know what they are missing.
