LA Guns celebra sus 30 años con una vuelta al Whisky a Go-Go

La mundialmente famosa Whisky a Go-Go acogió una noche con sus conciudadanos favoritos con un show encabezado por L.A. Guns, una banda que tuvo su punto de arranque en el mismo escenario hace 30 años. Si bien los nombres han cambiado, en lo que se refiere a la formación en directo, el sonido permanece igual; y los fans presentes no mostraron ni un ápice de falta de apoyo, ya que la sala estaba completamente llena cuando los LA Guns saltaron al escenario.
El frontman Phil Lewis no era uno de los miembros de la formación de 1983/84 cuando la banda se armó y comenzó su era dominante en la escena del Sunset Strip de los 80. La banda ha rotado sus miembros entrando y saliendo durante este tiempo, combinándolos con el grupo Hollywood Rose y,finalmente, creando dos piedras angulares en la generación Headbanger Ball (programa de vídeos hard & heavy) de la MTV: LA Guns y Guns n’Roses. El resultado sigue siendo legendario en su influencia para literalmente cientos, si no miles, de bandas que siguieron. Sin embargo, en 1985, la banda se había asegurado a Lewis en la voz y su proceso compositivo e historia de actuaciones en directo se fundiría con el del anterior guitarrista y miembro fundador Tracii Guns, para crear un sonido que garantizaría a la banda un lugar en los libros de historia del rock and roll para siempre.
La formación actual de LA Guns incluye al cantante Phil Lewis (Girl, Torme), el guitarrista Michael Grant (Endeverafter, Assassins), el batería Steve Riley (WASP, Steppenwolf), que ya tocó con la banda en 1987, y en el bajo Scotty Griffin (Hookers and Blow, The King Mixers) El nivel de autoridad que cada miembro aporta, proveniente de toda una historia de grabaciones y actuaciones en el circuito del hard rock, jugó un importante papel para convertir una noche en el Whisky en un show del que los asiduos a conciertos hablarán durante mucho tiempo.
Cuando cayó en telón y se encendieron las luces la banda comenzó su repertorio con cuatro de las favoritas de los fans. La primera de la noche fue Show No Mercy, un tema hard rockero que lanzó la banda al estrellato como el primer tema de su álbum debut, del mismo título, en 1988, alcanzando finalmente el estatus de oro tras el lanzamiento del segundo, titulado Cocked & Loaded. La siguiente fue el segundo corte del mismo álbum, Sex Action. Después, dos canciones del segundo trabajo- Never Enough y I Wanna Be Your Man. A lo largo de la velada, LA Guns completaron la gama de los singles de su catálogo, tocando los temas más fuertes y aclamados por los fans a lo largo de su historia. Desde la parte de atrás de la sala hasta el escenario, la audiencia levantaba las manos poniendo cuernos y cantaba. Una fan incluso, llevándolo al terreno personal con la banda, pudo quitarse una pulsera tipo esposa del brazo y ponerla en la muñeca de Lewis con gratitud, quien respondió dando las gracias desde el escenario y llevándola durante el resto del show.
La banda está girando ahora, independientemente, y ha programado actuaciones por todo USA, que mostrarán una serie de talentos que vienen también de la misma época de los exitosos años de la banda en la radio. A lo largo de agosto y septiembre, LA Guns compartirá escenarios con artistas como Ted Nugent, Cheap Trick, Winger, The (London) Quireboys, Enuff Z’ Nuff, Great White, Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) Warrant, Queensryche y Trixter. Una mirada al verano del 2014 te hace preguntarte: ¿que co..de año es este, en el que el hard rock es lo más grande arrasando sobre el escenario? Parece que los fans están agradecidos por la vuelta de la música que alimenta sus corazones hambrientos de hard rock.

The world famous Whisky A Go-Go played host to a night of local favorites with a headlining show by LA Guns, a band that got it’s start on the very same stage 30 years ago. While the names have changed, as far as the performing line-up goes, the sound remains the same; and fans in attendance showed zero lack of support as the venue was filled to capacity by the time LA Guns took the stage.
Front man Phil Lewis was not a member of the 1983/84 line-up of the band when they first assembled the group and began their domination of the 80’sera Sunset Strip music scene. The band rotated members in and out at the time, blending parts with the group Hollywood Rose and eventually spawning two cornerstones in the MTV Headbanger’s Ball generation – LA Guns and Guns n’ Roses. The result remains legendary in the influence of literally hundreds, if not thousands of bands that followed. By the time 1985 came around, however, the band had secured Lewis on vocals and his songwriting prowess and live performance history would meld with that of former band guitarist and founding member Tracii Guns to create a sound that would land the band a place in the rock and roll history books forever.
The current line-up of LA Guns includes singer Phil Lewis (Girl, Torme), guitarist Michael Grant (Endeverafter, Assassins), drummer Steve Riley (WASP, Steppenwolf) who has performed with the band as far back as 1987 and on bass guitar, Scotty Griffin (Hookers and Blow, The King Mixers.) The level of authority that each member provides from a history in recording and performing on the hard rock circuit played a key role in turning a night at the Whisky in to a show that concertgoers will talk about for some time to come.
When the curtain dropped and the lights came up, the band opened their set with four fan favorites. The opening song was Show No Mercy, a hard rocker that launched the band in to stardom as the first track of the self-titled debut by the band in 1988, eventually reaching gold status after the release of their follow up album titled Cocked & Loaded. Next came the 2nd track from the same album, Sex Action then two songs from the sophomore release – Never Enough and I Wanna Be Your Man. Throughout the night, LA Guns ran the gamut of singles from their catalog, touching on the strongest songs fans have responded to throughout their history. From the back of the room to the stage, attendees raised their horns and sang along, one fan even getting personal with the band was able to remove a cuff style bracelet from her arm and put it on Lewis’ wrist with gratitude, which he responded to with thanks from the stage, wearing it for the rest of the show.
The band is now on tour, independently, and has scheduled performances across the US that will showcase a series of talents that also come from the same era of the band’s years in scoring radio airplay. Throughout August and September, LA Guns will share stages with artists including Ted Nugent, Cheap Trick, Winger, The (London) Quireboys, Enuff Z’Nuff, Great White, Sebastian Bach (Skid Row,) Warrant, Queensryche and Trixter. A good look at the summer of 2014 begs one to ask – “What the hell year is this, where hard rock is the biggest thing taking the concert scene by storm?” Fans, it seems, are just grateful for the return of music that feeds their hungry hard rock hearts.
