Pablo All: Hello Ludwig how are you? Everything fine?
Ludwig Turner: Hello, I am very good, thank you. Great to be on the show.
PA: Nice to hear that. So, we are here because you have a new record, The Promise of a Life. Tell our readers what we can find on this album, in your own words.
LT: For me this is our best album so far, because what you can find, we have sort of been a bit experimental on this one and we really pushed ourselves as far as possible; both when it comes to lyrics and song writing and studio performance. If you enjoyed the previous albums and what we are trying to do you are probably going to love this one for sure.
PA: Some singles and video clips are already out, tell me more about why these ones were selected first.
LT: Actually we had the first one last year in the spring, because we were supposed to release this album last year in the fall. We had 3 singles out, which ones High Ground, The Law and the third one was Young Again. It was suppose to be only this 3 songs but then album was postponed and we realise 3 more songs, Mother Land, New Frontier and The Streets.
When we chose the songs, it was really difficult; I said we should not choose the songs ourselves as band or writers but the label really wanted us to have a say in it. Of course, some songs are, perhaps, more commercial than others, The Law being one of them, New Frontier is the one we really want to release as a single, but it is not really single material is it? It´s 5 minutes of progressive rock (Laughs).
PA: Very nice selection from my point of view. Well balanced, as the whole album in fact, different styles but with a direction; It´s complicated to find something original on these days and I think this album it is.
LT: Thank you, it means a lot.
PA: And about the new video The Law, (Zardonic Remix)? How arrived the idea about develop this version with Oscar Salomonsson from the Royal Swedish Opera and the film maker Claudio Marino (Ghost, Tribulation, …)
LT: So we noticed that song got a lot of attention in general, but a lot of attention from these nighthawk Japanese remix stuff; they split of the tempo of the song, they slowed it down and made different versions of it, so we thought, maybe is a cool song for us to make a remix of, we never done that before.
We thought that song was a good experiment and to be honest the first time we heard it we were like “what the hell is this?” (laughs), but it sort of grows on you and I actually listen to it to work out or when I need some extra energy.
PA: Yes, it´s nice, funny and catchy. I knew REACH in 2013 with your Wake Me Up rock cover by AVICII. Can we expect more covers like this in the future?
LT: Well, we are not super into covers. The Wake Me Up thing was really more of an accident, maybe accident is not the right word. When this song came out we wanted to do something with it. I was writing a riff for Wake Me Up, and then we recorded the song in a few hours and then we released it the same night I think.
We haven’t really focused on any specific track, we tried Gods Going To Cut You Down by Johnny Cash and we thought: “maybe we should released this” It´s was really cool. We showed it to a guy from SONY that we had a contact with in that moment and two weeks later, MARILYN MANSON released the cover of that song, and sound exactly like ours (laughs) I am not saying that MARILYN MANSON ripped off our cover version, but get the conspiracies going, I guess (laughs).
PA: OH, interesting… What do you think about the topic “New Wave Of Swedish Sleaze Metal”? Do you think that REACH fits this group with bands like CRASHDÏET, HARDCORE SUPERSTAR, DANGER, LOADED FUEL, NASTY IDOLS, …
LT: Perhaps… I would be honoured to be in that group of bands, I love all of them especially HARDCORE SUPERSTAR. As a spontaneous thought REACH is a bit non-commercial, it´s not intended but it ends up that way… it´s complicated, I had never thought about that question, it´s a good one though!
PA: Yeah, I can understand you perfectly, and I agree; because I love the bands in this group too, but REACH is… complicated to describe, in some ways you are in and in others your are out of the boundaries of this group. It´s complicated to put your finger on the style of the band and when it´s complicated it… I like it. (laughs)
LT: Yeah! (laughs)
PA: Jona Tee (producer and keys on HEAT band), is co-author in many songs and the producer too. It´s like the fourth man in the band?
LT: Most of the songs I do I write at home and I bring the demos which I then sent to the rest of the band and if they like it and think it something we should proceed with, we take to Jona.
He plays the keyboard and piano brilliantly and we love that, we don’t have it on the band, I have started practicing since a year back; he brings a lot to the formula and progression of the songs; a lot of the sounds are definitely thanks to Jona. We are 3 best friends in the band and Jona is a very good friend of mine, so yes, we can say that he is the fourth man in the band, especially for this album.
PA: How was the recording process? How was a typical day in the studio?
LT: We are asked about this a lot, because some of the songs are very progressive and difficult perhaps; but everything was smooth, there was no “Hard-Rock partying with AXL ROSE having sex in the studio” (laughs). We went in to the studio, very focused, very convinced of what we were trying to do. Perhaps, looking from the outside it was boring progress, but for us this was the most fun part of recording the album. Everyone was at the top of their game, playing really well and the ideas were flying around and we got through it smoothly and quickly and we are very satisfied with the results.
PA: And about your song-writing process, do you have any specific mantra or workflow?
LT: Well, sometimes I get the lyrics idea and then I build the song from that. Satellites and Promise of a life from this album were written that way, I wrote the lyrics and then made a soundtrack from there. Usually I wrote 20 songs in a couple of months and then I take a break for a few weeks and I panic I thought I can´t make music anymore, everything is shit, … (laughs) I think to myself that I have lost it and I might as well do something else. I have been like that these last 6 months, were I think everything I do sucks, but I know it will come back, I just keep on writing music.
PA: Who are you biggest influences in you guitar playing?
LT: Gary Moore is my big guitar idol, definitely.
PA: It´s complicated to talk about touring and live events in these times, any plans? What’s your opinion about broadcast and on-line events?
LT: We have some gigs in the fall with HEAT, the tour was postponed a few times but we hope it will happen.
With regards to streaming gigs, we did that, and we want to do more, it was really cool just to give something to the REACH family. But is not my favourite thing to do, that live streaming, I miss the whole thing about the live audience, on line gigs are like streaming a video game on Twitch. But perhaps we will do some more before the summer.
PA: Yeah, same here, I am missing concerts and festivals too, it has been one year since my last concert (and trip)! HEAT + Crashdïet + Reach in Stockholm, I was there, that was my last concert/trip.
LT: Really? In Stockholm? Nice! This was our last concert too.
PA: Will be nice join you in your next concert and close the circle (laughs)
LT: Yeah!
PA: You will continue developing live shows like a power-trio? How difficult is be the only guitar player and the singer at the same time, man?
LT: (laughs) I tried when I write the songs not to make difficult vocal and guitar parts at the same time. Jona brings out the best in me when we are recording definitely, Jona says “play this, its sounds cool” like a stretch guitar and sometimes they collided with lyrics and I really struggle to play it.
There are a few of those on the previous album, so I thought a bit more about this one, we want to perform everything and do it well.
PA: Let´s talk about your guitar gear. As you can see in my background (I show him my guitars on the wall) I am a music gear lover and I love to ask about this topic (laughs) How many guitars do you have? What is your favourite one for recording and your preferred one for live shows.
LT: I have 7. A Charvel that I use to play in the Gary More Tribute with REACH band. Then I have a Stratocaster, a few Les Pauls. Not to many I can´t take care properly all of them at the same time.
And about gear I usually play a JVM 410 and I have a JCM 800 too, the same that Gary Moore used, old style model. But actually I check our the HELIX, and to be honest I love it! I have tried on live and I really like it. If you have the JCM 800 with the right set up, with the microphone on the right position, will be perfect; but for the REACH style and the effects that we use. But HELIX have a lot of potential, and you don´t need to carry the amp and cabinet!
PA: Yes, I have a KEMPER, similar to HELIX, and I am in love with it. I have a Marshall JCM 900 too, sometimes I like play with it, direct way, valve amp and a cabinet and that is all and other times I like spend hours checking and experimenting different sounds and profiles… I won´t choose (laughs)
LT: I agree with you (laughs)
PA: OK, let´s go for the final part: the quick fire questions!

Si disfrutaste de los álbumes anteriores y de lo que estamos tratando de hacer, probablemente te encantará este.
PA: Algunos singles y videoclips ya están publicados, cuéntame más sobre por qué estos fueron seleccionados primero.
LT: De hecho, sacamos el primero el año pasado en primavera, porque se suponía que íbamos a lanzar este álbum el año pasado en el otoño. Tuvimos 3 singles, que fueron High Ground, The Law y el tercero fue Young Again. Se suponía que serían sólo estas 3 canciones, pero luego el álbum se pospuso y lanzamos 3 canciones más, Mother Land, New Frontier y The Streets. Cuando elegimos las canciones, fue realmente difícil; Pienso que no deberíamos elegir las canciones nosotros mismos como banda o escritores, pero el sello realmente quería que tuviéramos algo que decir. Por supuesto, algunas canciones son, quizás, más comerciales que otras, siendo The Law una de ellas, New Frontier es la que realmente queríamos lanzar como single, pero en realidad no es material de single, verdad? Son 5 minutos de rock progresivo (risas).
PA: Muy buena selección desde mi punto de vista. Bien equilibrado, como todo el disco, estilos diferentes pero con una dirección; Es complicado encontrar algo original en estos días y creo que este disco lo es.
LT: Gracias, significa mucho para mi.
PA: Y sobre el nuevo video The Law, (Zardonic Remix)? Cómo surgió la idea de desarrollar esta versión con Oscar Salomonsson de la Real Ópera Sueca y el cineasta Claudio Marino (Ghost, Tribulation, …)
LT: Nos dimos cuenta de que la canción llamó mucho la atención en general, pero también mucho la atención de remixes japoneses; dividieron el tempo de la canción, la ralentizaron e hicieron diferentes versiones de ella, así que pensamos, tal vez sea una canción genial para hacer un remix, nunca lo habíamos hecho antes. Pensamos que la canción era un buen experimento y para ser honestos, la primera vez que la escuchamos pensamos «qué diablos es esto?» (risas); pero como que va creciendo en ti y de hecho lo escucho para hacer ejercicio o cuando necesito un poco de energía extra.
PA: Sí, es buena, divertida y pegadiza. Descubrí REACH en 2013 con la versión de Wake Me Up rock de AVICII. Podemos esperar más versiones como esta en el futuro?
LT: Bueno, no nos gustan especialmente las versiones. Lo de Wake Me Up fue más un accidente, tal vez accidente no es la palabra correcta. Cuando salió esta canción, queríamos hacer algo con ella. Estaba escribiendo un riff para Wake Me Up, grabamos la canción en unas horas y luego la lanzamos la misma noche, creo.
Probamos Gods Going To Cut You Down de Johnny Cash y pensamos: «tal vez deberíamos lanzar esto». Fue realmente genial. Se lo mostramos a un chico de SONY con el que tuvimos un contacto en ese momento y dos semanas después, MARILYN MANSON lanzó la versión de esa canción y suena exactamente como la nuestra (risas) No estoy diciendo que MARILYN MANSON haya copiado nuestra versión, pero supongo que podemos dar rienda suelta a las conspiraciones (risas).
PA: OH, interesante… Qué opinas de la“New Wave Of Swedish Sleaze Metal”? Crees que REACH encaja en este grupo con bandas como CRASHDÏET, HARDCORE SUPERSTAR, DANGER, LOADED FUEL, NASTY IDOLS, …
LT: Quizás … Me sentiría honrado de estar en ese grupo de bandas, las amo a todas, especialmente a HARDCORE SUPERSTAR. Como un pensamiento espontáneo, REACH es un poco no-comercial, no está intencionado, pero es así … es complicado, nunca había pensado en esa pregunta, es una buena pregunta!
PA: Sí, puedo entenderte perfectamente y estoy de acuerdo; porque también amo a las bandas de este grupo, pero REACH es … complicado de describir, de alguna manera está dentro y en otras está fuera de los límites de este grupo. Es complicado definir el estilo de la banda y cuando es complicado … me gusta. (risas)
LT: Sí! (risas)
PA: Jona Tee (productor y teclista de la banda HEAT), es coautor de muchas canciones y también productor. Es como el cuarto miembro de la banda?
LT: La mayoría de las canciones que hago las escribo en casa, más tarde las demos que luego envío al resto de la banda y si les gusta y piensan que deberíamos proceder, se las llevamos a Jona.
Jona toca el teclado y el piano de manera brillante y eso nos encanta, no lo tenemos en la banda, yo he comenzado a practicar desde hace un año; aporta mucho a la fórmula y progresión de las canciones; muchos de los sonidos son definitivamente gracias a Jona. Somos 3 buenos amigos en la banda y Jona es un muy buen amigo mío, así que sí, podemos decir que es el cuarto miembro de la banda, especialmente para este álbum.
PA: Cómo fue el proceso de grabación? Cómo era un día típico en el estudio?
LT: Nos preguntan mucho sobre esto, porque algunas de las canciones son muy progresivas y quizás difíciles; pero todo fue fluido, no hubo “fiesta de Hard-Rock con AXL ROSE teniendo sexo en el estudio” (risas). Entramos al estudio muy concentrados, muy convencidos de lo que estábamos intentando hacer. Quizás, visto desde fuera fue un proceso aburrido, pero para nosotros ésta fue la parte más divertida de grabar el álbum. Todos estaban al máximo, tocando realmente bien y las ideas eran muy buenas, estamos muy satisfechos con los resultados.
PA: Y sobre el proceso de composición de canciones, tienes algún mantra o flujo de trabajo específico?
LT: Bueno, a veces se me ocurre la idea de la letra y luego construyo la canción a partir de eso. Satellites y The Promise of a Life de este álbum se escribieron de esa manera, escribí la letra y luego hice una banda sonora a partir de ahí. Normalmente escribo 20 canciones en un par de meses y luego me tomo un descanso por unas semanas y entro en pánico pensando que ya no puedo hacer música nunca más, todo es una mierda, … (risas) Pienso para mí mismo que sí. He estado así estos últimos 6 meses, creo que todo lo que hago apesta, pero sé que volverá, sigo escribiendo música.
PA: ¿Quiénes son tus mayores influencias en tu forma de tocar la guitarra?
LT: Gary Moore es mi gran ídolo de la guitarra, definitivamente.
PA: Es complicado hablar de giras y eventos en vivo en estos tiempos, algún plan? Cuál es su opinión sobre los eventos on-line?
LT: Tenemos algunos conciertos en otoño con HEAT, la gira se pospuso un par de veces, pero esperamos que se pueda realizar. Con respecto a los conciertos on-line, hemos hecho alguno y queremos hacer más, fue realmente genial dar algo a los fans de REACH. Pero no es lo que más me gusta hacer, los eventos on-line, echo de menos todo lo relacionado con la audiencia en vivo, los conciertos on-line son como la transmisión de un videojuego en Twitch. Pero quizás hagamos algo más antes del verano.
PA: Sí, me pasa lo mismo, echo de menos los conciertos y festivales, ha pasado un año desde mi último concierto (y viaje)! HEAT + Crashdïet + Reach en Estocolmo, estuve allí, ese fue mi último concierto / viaje.
LT: De verdad? En Estocolmo? Yeah! Este también fue nuestro último concierto.
PA: Sería genial estar en vuestro próximo concierto y cerrar el círculo (risas).
LT: Sí!
PA: Seguiréis tocando en directo como trío? Cómo de difícil es ser el único guitarrista y cantante al mismo tiempo?
LT: (risas) Cuando escribo las canciones intento no hacer partes difíciles de voz y guitarra al mismo tiempo. Definitivamente Jona saca lo mejor de mí cuando estamos grabando, Jona dice «toca esto, suena genial» y a veces las guitarras chocan con las letras y realmente me cuesta tocarlo a la vez. Hay algunos temas así del álbum anterior, así que pensé un poco más en este, queremos tocar todo y hacerlo bien.
PA: Hablemos de tu equipo de guitarra. Como pueden ver en mi fondo (le muestro mis guitarras en la pared) me encanta preguntar sobre estos temas (risas) Cuántas guitarras y equipo tienes?
LT: Tengo 7. Un Charvel que suelo tocar en el Gary More Tribute con la banda REACH. Luego tengo una Stratocaster, algunas Les Paul. No muchas, no puedo cuidar todas adecuadamente. Y sobre el equipo suelo tocar con un Marshall JVM 410 y también tengo un JCM 800, el mismo modelo que usó Gary Moore. Pero últimamente he probado un HELIX y para ser honesto, me encanta! Lo he probado en directo y me gusta mucho. Si tienes un JCM 800 con la configuración correcta, con el micrófono en la posición correcta, será perfecto; sino por el estilo REACH y los efectos que usamos el HELIX me va muy bien. Pero HELIX tiene mucho potencial y no necesitas cargar con el amplificador y la pantalla!
PA: Sí, tengo un KEMPER, similar a HELIX, y estoy enamorado de él. También tengo un Marshall JCM 900, a veces prefiero tocar con él, directo, amplificador de válvulas y pantalla; otras veces me gusta pasar horas revisando y experimentando diferentes sonidos y perfiles … No quiero elegir, me quedo con los dos mundos (risas).
LT: Estoy de acuerdo contigo (risas)
