«En una cosa estamos los 7 de acuerdo y es que todos tenemos el deseo de mantenerlo como nuestra banda principal.» – Samu Bodom e Iñigo Ortuñez entrevistaron a DANI LÖBLE, batería de HELLOWEEN.
Samu Bodum (S.B.) & Iñigo Ortuñez (I.O.): Hola Dani, ¿qué tal? En primer lugar, muchísimas gracias por dedicar un tiempo a Rock Angels. ¿Cómo estáis tú y tu familia? Esperamos que muy bien.
Dani Löble (D.L.): Oh, gracias… Mi familia está bien y yo estoy también bien y feliz, aunque un poquito estresado por esta extraña época. Y no hablo de la pandemia, ¡si no de las entrevistas! Así de repente tenemos muchísimas entrevistas… ¡incluso yo que soy el batería!
S.B. / I.O.: ¡Pero eres el batería de HELLOWEEN y llevas muchísimos años!
D.L.: Sí, es cierto… soy el batería que ha estado más tiempo, ¡creo que ya 17 años! Es un jodido montón de tiempo, pero si te soy sincero, ha ido a toda velocidad. El tiempo vuela… pensaba que era por la edad, pero quizás no. Algunos científicos han descubierto que la tierra gira ahora un poquito más rápido, ¡así que quizás esa sea la razón! Lo dicen algunos científicos eh… no me crucifiquéis a mí, jaja…
S.B. / I.O.: ¡Quién sabe! OK, enhorabuena por vuestro nuevo disco “Helloween”, es uno de los discos más esperados en el Metal en los últimos 25 años. ¿Te acuerdas del momento en el que os dijisteis, “vamos a hacer un disco juntos los 7”? ¿Por qué tomasteis esa decisión?
D.L.: Esta idea del nuevo disco fue entrando durante el “Pumpkins United Tour” y puedes imaginarte que a nuestro Management se les levantaron las orejas, así que poco a poco se convirtió en algo más serio. Lo estábamos pasando genial, así que lo vimos clarísimo tío, ¡vamos a hacer un nuevo disco! No fue algo premeditado para nosotros, quizás sí para el Management… Y ahora que tenemos el disco está sobrepasando nuestras expectativas, de verdad.
S.B. / I.O.: ¿Cómo ha ido el proceso de grabación del disco? Creo que todavía Deris y Weikath son los principales compositores, ¿Verdad? Creo que muchos fans echan de menos algo más de Hansen…
D.L.: Realmente los chicos están todo el día escribiendo, da igual que haya planes para un nuevo disco o no. Empezaron a componer más en serio para este “Helloween” al final del Tour “Pumpkins United”, chateando y compartiendo ideas. En 2019 tuvimos unas jornadas de 2 días, junto con nuestro productor de toda la vida y nos sentamos juntos a compartir ideas, escuchar demos y discutir cómo podía ir el disco. Yo no escribo canciones, con lo que pude ser muy neutral sobre lo que me molaba o no. ¡Me quedé alucinado con la calidad, energía y frescura de las demos! Fue como, “¿¡Qué cojones está pasando aquí!?”
S.B. / I.O.: He podido escuchar el disco unas cuantas veces y mejora con las escuchas. Echo de menos algunas canciones con un tempo más lento, tipo “Hey Lord”, “If I could fly” o “Fall into pieces”… ¿Estabais muy centrados en hacer un disco muy rápido y muy heavy?
D.L.: Simplemente salió así… No íbamos con ninguna “fórmula de éxito” en nuestras cabezas, esto hubiera sido una barrera. El disco tiene el espíritu, la energía y la crudeza de “Walls of Jericho”, creo que una canción como “Robot King” podría haber entrado sin problemas en dicho disco; también está el punto melódico de los “Keeper” y el toque más progresivo que HELLOWEEN ha ido desarrollando en los últimos 20 años, desde que Uli entró en la banda y que a mi me encanta. También grabamos una balada, pero decidimos reservarla para un posible siguiente disco, porque era como una frenada en seco, ya que como dices, ¡Todo el resto del disco era muy rápido y no pegaba!
S.B. / I.O.: ¿Escribisteis canciones para que fueran cantadas específicamente por Deris, o Hansen o Kiske? ¿Pensasteis en algún momento en hacer un disco triple, con un cantante por disco?
D.L.: ¡Realmente tenemos 4! Sascha ha estado cantando todos los coros principales desde que entró en HELLOWEEN. En el disco, excepto Markus y yo, todos los demás cantan. ¡Puedes hasta escuchar a Weikath gritando!
Realmente no todas las canciones encajan con todas las voces. Por ejemplo, Sascha escribió “Angels” específicamente para Kiske, lo puedes escuchar en las frecuencias y en todo. Pero Kiske no sonaría bien en todas las canciones. Tener a 4 cantantes con tanto talento, únicos y tan diferentes es genial, podemos elegir cualquier tipo de voz en cada parte. Es lo que yo llamo un “problema de ricos”. Te diría que para “Skyfall”, a los chicos les llevó varias semanas elegir las voces correctas para cada parte de la canción. Finalmente fue un trabajo brutal de Dennis Ward (PINK CREAM 69) y de nuestro productor de siempre, Charlie (Bauerfeind), quien nos conoce de maravilla. Yo nunca grabaría un disco con nadie más. ¡Todos los discos en los que he participado, han sido con él!
S.B. / I.O.: Después de una revisión pormenorizada de la portada, que es absolutamente maravillosa, veo muchos guiños a los “Keepers”, al “Master Of The Rings”, al “The Time Of The Oath”. ¿Hay más guiños por ahí a otros discos?
D.L.: La portada fue hecha por Eliran Kantor, que haya hecho las de los últimos discos de TESTAMENT y de otros muchos. Queríamos darle sentido a la Producción incluso desde la portada. Hemos grabado sólo aire, trajimos amplificadores y altavoces y pusimos micros por cada uno de los altavoces, no hubo ni una señal digital. Lo hicimos a la antigua usanza. ¡Fue un proceso muy largo conseguir el sonido adecuado de las guitarras apara cada canción! Lo mismo que para las baterías.
Por ese motivo queríamos también una portada pintada a mano, no una digital. De la misma manera que habíamos grabado el disco, queríamos que fuera hecha la portada. ¡Por eso elegimos a Kantor! La portada es alucinante… como dices tiene elementos de “The Time Of The Oath”, algo del “Better Than Raw”, por supuesto del “Master Of The Rings”, de los “Keepers”… del “Gambling…”, más o menos de todas las épocas.
S.B. / I.O.: Bueno, aquí está Samu Bodom, quién hizo una espectacular reseña solo de la portada. ¡Es espectacular! Realmente merece la pena leerla. Analizó cada mínimo detalle de la portada, relacionándolo con los discos. ¡Alucinante! (leerla aquí)
D.L.: ¡Oh, genial! Me estáis alegrando el día, jajaja…
S.B. / I.O.: Dinos por favor, qué opinas del sonido que has conseguido sacar utilizando el legendario kit de Ingo. ¿Cómo se os ocurrió esa idea? También he leído por ahí que grabasteis el disco en la misma mesa de mezclas en la que se mezclaron los 3 primeros discos de HELLOWEEN con Andi. Así que más guiños a épocas pasadas…
D.L.: Usamos los Estudios HOME en Hamburgo para hacer las sesiones de jam y grabar las baterías. Fue el sitio dónde Ingo y Kiske hicieron su última grabación, “Chamaleon”. Y pude utilizar el mismo Kit que usó Ingo aquella vez. Me encanta ese tipo de kit que usó, una marca alemana llamada Sonor Drums, que hace unas batería con un sonido muy denso. El tipo de baterías que se usaban mucho en los 80 y 90. Quería volver a traer ese sonido, con esa cola en los “toms”.
En cuanto grabé la primera canción con ese tipo de batería, me decidí a comprarme una para mí para el futuro. ¡Es el sonido que había estado buscando durante años!
S.B. / I.O.: ¿Cuántas de las nuevas canciones pensáis tocar en directo? Creo que será muy exigente para Kiske y Deris defender esas canciones en directo, porque tienen muchísimos agudos. ¿Realmente se ven capaces de defender estas canciones en el Tour?
D.L.: ¡Eh! Eso forma parte de esta pasión nuestra… Qué te puedo decir, en el último tour tuve que hacer shows de 3 horas y no precisamente llenos de baladas, jajaja…
S.B. / I.O.: Estuvimos en el concierto de Madrid y qué te puedo decir… ¡fue tremendo! Todo el mundo salíamos del recinto con una gran sonrisa en nuestras caras.
D.L.: ¡Gracias! Fue el show que grabamos de nuestra gira europea… ¡fue genial!
S.B. / I.O.: ¿Cuáles son los planes futuros de la banda tras esto disco y su gira? ¿Podremos disfrutar de la formación actual durante más años? En caso de que sí, ¿crees que será capaz de compaginarse con más discos de GAMMA RAY o UNISONIC? ¿O quizás todos os enfocaréis en HELLOWEEN como IRON MAIDEN hizo en la vuelta de Bruce y Adrian?
D.L.: En una cosa estamos los 7 de acuerdo y es que todos tenemos el deseo de mantenerla como nuestra banda principal. Por supuesto que todos en la banda tienen sus cosas paralelas, bueno el único que sólo hace HELLOWEEN es Weikath, bueno y se sienta en el sofá, fuma y se lo pasa bien, jaja… Kiske está ahora grabando un disco acústico tipo Elvis Presley o algo así. No tengo ni idea de lo que tiene pensando Kai Hansen con sus GAMMA RAY, quizás haga algo más, pero nunca tendrá tanto tiempo como tenía antes de unirse de nuevo a HELLOWEEN.
S.B. / I.O.: ¿Cómo ves tu papel en HELLOWEEN tras más de 15 años? Tus 2 predecesores eran muy top. Ingo era un batería muy poderoso y Uli tenía muchísimo talento y era un compositor impresionante. ¿Cómo te sientes además tocando ahora con leyendas como Kiske o Hansen?
D.L.: Mi papel es ser un modelo para las nuevas generaciones. Para mí ha sido alucinante desde que entré en una banda legendaria como HELLOWEEN, estoy realmente orgulloso y doy todo lo que tengo, ya que es lo que HELLOWEEN y nuestra música se merece. Esta es mi vida y los chicos se han convertido en mi familia. Además puedo hacer lo que me apetezca con mis partes de música, nadie pone nunca ninguna pega. Entiendo que muchos de los fans antiguos crecieron con Ingo y le echan de menos, pero no puedo hacer nada en eso, sólo tocar la música. Soy un jodido Helloweneer!!
S.B. / I.O.: Si llevas 17 años en la banda es porque lo estás haciendo increíble… ¡Enhorabuena por ello! Una pregunta complicada… “¿Quiénes son vosotros 7, las 7 llaves del Guardián o los 7 mares que había que encerrar?”
D.L.: Jajaja… ¡esa es muy buena! ¡Diría que somos las 7 llaves!

Interview to Dani Löble (HELLOWEEN)
Samu Bodum (S.B.) & Iñigo Ortuñez (I.O.): Hello Dani, how are you? First of all, thank you so much for having some time for Rock Angels. How are you and your family? We really hope you are OK.
Dani Löble (D.L.): Oh, thank you… My family is good, and I’m also good and happy, a bit stressed as we are going through strange times, but not due to the Pandemic, but because of the interviews! All of a sudden there is a big run for interviews… even for me as the drummer!
S.B. / I.O.: But you are the drummer of HELLOWEEN and have been may years in the band!!
D.L.: Yeah, it’s true… I’m the drummer who has been longer, I think like 17 years! It’s a fucking long time, but to be honest, it was pacing! Time flies… I thought it was due to my age, but maybe not. Scholars found out that the Earth turns a bit quicker, so maybe this is the reason! Scholars found out eh… don’t nail me to the cross.
S.B. / I.O.: Who knows! OK, first of all, congratulations for the new album “Helloween”, it’s one of the most expected releases in the Metal scene of the last 25 years. Can you recall the time you all said “let’s make a new record together the 7 of us!” and why did you take this decision?
D.L.: This idea of recording an album sneaked in a bit during the time of “Pumpkins United Tour” and you can guess that our Management were with big ears, so the talking became stronger and more serious. We were doing great, so for all of us it was crystal clear, let’s do an album! It wasn’t planned for us, maybe for the Management… And now we have an album and has surpassed our own expectations, to be honest.
S.B. / I.O.: How has been the writing process for the album? I believe that still Deris and Weikath are the main writers, right? Maybe some fans are missing a bit more of Hansen…
D.L.: Actually the boys write all day long, it doesn’t matter if there are plans for a new album or not. The boys started writing more seriously for this “Helloween” record at the end of “Pumpkins United Tour”, they were chatting and swapping ideas. In 2019 we had a 2 days band meeting, together with our long time Producer and sat together to share ideas, listen to demos and to discuss in which way we could go with the album. I don’t write songs, so I could be very neutral and point out what was cool and what not. I was amazed by the quality, the energy and freshness of the demos! So I was like “Holy shit! What’s going on?”.
S.B. / I.O.: I have been able to listen to the album a few times and keeps getting better. I have to say I’m missing some slower tempo songs such as “Hey Lord”, “If I could fly”, “Fall into pieces”… Were you focused on making a very fast and heavy album?
D.L.: It just happened… We did not have in our heads the “success” thinking, this would have been a barrier. This album has the spirit, the energy, the rawness of “Walls of Jericho”, I think a song like “Robot King” could easily found its way into that album; there is also the melodic approach of the “Keepers” saga and the more progressive touch that HELLOWEEN has evolved in the last 20 years, around the time Uli came into the band, that I really like it. Of course we recorded a ballad, but we decided to keep it for a potential next record, because it was like a hand brake, as you say, the rest of the album is so fast that it did not fit!
S.B. / I.O.: Was there any song that was clearly written to be sang by Deris, Hansen and Kiske? Did you ever think about the option to make a triple album with one singer per disc?
D.L.: In fact we have four! Sascha has been singing all the main vocals in the background since he joined HELLOWEEN. On the record, except Markus and me, everyone is singing. You can even hear Weikath screaming!
Actually not every song fits for every voice. For example, “Angels”, Sascha wrote that song specially for Kiske, you can hear the frequencies and everything. But Kiske wouldn’t sound good on each of the songs. Having 4 talented, unique and distinctive singers is great, we can pick up whatever voice we need for each part. I would call it a “luxury problem”!
I would tell you that for “Skyfall”, it took weeks for the boys to chose the right voices in each part. It was a great work finally from Dennis Ward (PINK CREAM 69) and our longtime producer Charlie (Bauerfeind), he knows us perfectly. I would never record an album without him! All of the records which I have ever done, have been with him!
S.B. / I.O.: After deep diving in the album cover, which is absolutely amazing, I saw many winks to the “Keepers” and also to “Master of the Rings” and “The time of the oath”. Will we find more winks to other albums?
D.L.: The cover was done by Eliran Kantor, who has done the recent works of TESTAMENT and many others. We wanted to give sense to the Production also from the cover. We recorded just air, we brought amplifiers and speakers and we microphoned every speaker, there was no digital signal. We did the old way. It was a very long process to get the appropriate guitar sound for each song! Same as for the drums. That’s the reason why we wanted to have a hand painted cover, not a digital printed one. As the record was made, we wanted to have the cover made. That’s the reason why we chose Kantor!
The cover is amazing… as You said we put hints of “The Time Of The Oath”, some “Better Than Raw” details, of course “Master of the Rings”, the “Keepers”… the “Gambling…”, we combined all eras more or less.
S.B. / I.O.: Here we have, Samu Bodom, who made an amazing review only of the Cover. It was incredible! It’s really worth reading it. He analyzed every single detail of the cover, relating it to each of the albums. Astonishing! (read here)
D.L.: Oh, great!! You are making my day, haha…
S.B. / I.O.: Let us know your feelings about the sound you have been able to get by using the legendary Ingo’s Kit. How did the band think about this idea? I read you have also decided to record the album in the same Mixing Table used for the first 3 HELLOWEEN albums with Deris. So again some winks to previous times…
D.L.: We used the HOME Studios in Hamburg to do the Jam sessions and record the drums. This was the place where Ingo and Kiske did their last recordings, “Chamaleon”. And this time I used the same kit that Ingo used that time. I love that kind of kit he used, a German brand called Sonor Drums, which are made of thick shell. This kind of drums was used in so many records during the 80s and 90s. I wanted to bring back that sound, I really like this long toms drums. So when I recorded the first song with that drum, I decided to buy it for me also for the future! It has the sound I have been looking for during many years.
S.B. / I.O.: How many of the new songs are your planning to play live in the next Tour? I think it will be hard for Kiske and Deris to defend the songs live, as they have plenty of high pitched notes. Are they feeling capable for defending this kind of songs on tour?
D.L.: Hey! That’s part of the passion we chose! What can I say… the last tour I had to do 3h shows and they were not filled with ballads, haha…
S.B. / I.O.: We were in the show you did in Madrid and what to say… it was just terrific! All the people were leaving the venue with huge smiles in our faces.
D.L.: Thanks! That was the show we recorded in Europe, it was great!
S.B. / I.O.: Which are the future plans for the band after this album and Tour? Will we enjoy the current line-up during more years? In case yes, do you think this will be compatible with new albums from GAMMA RAY or UNISONIC or others? Or maybe you Will all focus in HELLOWEEN as MAIDEN did after the come-back of Bruce and Adrian?
D.L.: One thing for sure is that the 7 of us have a unanimous feeling of keep it going as the main band. For sure everyone in the band has other things going aside, well the only one who only does HELLOWEEN is Weikath, he just smokes and tries to have a good time, haha… Kiske is now recording an Elvis Presley acoustic album or something like this. I have no idea what Kai Hansen has planned for GAMMA RAY in the future, he may do something, but he will never have much time as he had before he joined HELLOWEEN again.
S.B. / I.O.: How do you see your role in HELLOWEEN after more than 15 years? Your 2 predecessors were really top! Ingo was such a powerhouse drummer and Uli is really talented and impressive songwriter. How do you feel by playing with legends like Kiske, Hansen… now?
D.L.: My role is to be a role model for younger generations. For me it’s amazing since I joined a legendary band as HELLOWEEN, I’m very proud of it and I really give my very best, as this is what HELLOWEEN and our music deserves. This is my life and the boys have become my family. I can do whatever I want to do with my music, no one ever puts an argument. I can understand some of the old fans grew up with Ingo and maybe they miss him, but I can’t help on that, just play the music! I’m a fuckin Helloweener!
S.B. / I.O.: If you are already 17 years in the band is because you are doing an amazing job man… Congratulations for this. Let’s go for a tricky question: “are you guys the 7 keys of the Keeper or the 7 seas to lock up?”.
D.L.: Hahaha… that’s great. I would say We are The Seven Keys!
