SKID ROW – The Gang’s All Here (2022) Review

ENGLISH REVIEW INCLUDED

“We’re back where we should be” (estamos dónde debíamos estar).

“I’ll be there come hell or high water”, como dicen en el corte que abre el redondo.

ENGLISH REVIEW

How to relaunch a mythical band, which released in its beginnings 2 of the best albums in the history of Rock/Metal? The arrival of Grunge created tensions in the band that ended with the departure of Sebastian Bach, giving them a blow from which they have never been able to recover in terms of popularity and repercussion. On the other hand, neither Snake nor Bolan have succumbed to the siren songs… nor to the considerable amounts of money that must have been put in front of them to reunite with Seb, which indicates that they are comfortable with their new status.

In March of this year, fans of the band greeted with joy the news that the tremendous Erik Grönwall was joining the band as the new singer and many saw it as the definitive move to regain some of the lost ground. The experiments with Tony Harnell and ZP Theart, had not pleased many of us fans and Erik has the energy, the quality and the youth, which is possibly needed to give the band a boost. His years in H.E.A.T. had placed him as one of the best and most versatile frontman of the Hard Rock scene.

The reality is that the album has been spectacular. A madness for lovers of the band, with a lot of hard-hitting and powerful songs, but at the same time with enough melody to get stuck in your head. I’ve been humming cannon shots like the punky and vindictive «Not dead yet», where Rachel Bolan’s bass gives no mercy or the warrior «Time bomb», with its effective chorus that explodes in our brain: «…tik, tik, tik, tik, tik, tik… BOMB!!!» «I’m a time bomb» they say, and they don’t lie.

Erik’s work is sensational, imprinting all the rage and power that a band like SKID ROW needs. He doesn’t have Sebastian Bach’s timbre, but he has put all his heart into it so that we don’t miss him. If you don’t believe it listen to «Hell or high water» or the brutal «Resurrected», again very vindictive of «here we are, we have risen». I imagine he’s referring to both the band, and the rock/metal scene itself. «We’re back where we should be».

In general the trademark sound of the band is present, with those thick guitars of Snake and Scotti Hill, in perfect communion with Bolan’s powerful bass, which sounds very greased with the drums of Rob Hammersmith, with whom he has already been with for 12 years (listen to them on «Tear it down»). Songs like «The Gang’s all here», with its trademark bass start and its simple and effective chorus, promise a lot of fists raised live, and hits like «Nowhere fast», with a changing tempo, but always powerful, show that Snake and Bolan have lost neither inspiration nor energy.

«When the lights come on» sounds a bit more danceable and fun, although the guitars are still on fire, as in the riffs of «World on fire», which has an effective chorus designed for live performances and beers on tap.

Perhaps this album lacks a couple of epic ballads like «In a darkened room», «18 and life» or «Quicksand Jesus», which always worked so well in their albums, since «October’s song» does not reach the level of emotion and intensity of those songs, being in any case a good song that gains a lot with the listens and especially when you get immersed in the lyrics, as sad as full of optimism. But in any case, the album is a great Hard Rock and Heavy Metal album, one of those that you can play over and over again, because they fly by and get stuck in your head for days.

Does no promoter really think that SKID ROW could have come to Spain on this tour and gathered a good number of fans? I hope that after the release of the album, when people see the incredible work they have done and see how the band works live, this mistake will be corrected. If they offer them to us for Burgos… I’ll fucking put the money in!!!!!

And if they play nearby… «I’ll be there come hell or high water», as they say in the opening track.

There is SKID ROW for a while and if you don’t believe it… they already tell you: «Not dead yet… don’t throw dirt on an open casket!», something like «we are not dead yet… don’t throw dirt on an open casket»! Time will prove them right.
