ENGLISH INTERVIEW INCLUDED BELOW
Hace poco teníamos la oportunidad de charlar con Lauren Hart, la impresionante vocalista de la banda de Groove Metal ONCE HUMAN, formada por el legendario guitarrista de MACHINE HEAD y SOULFLY, Logan Mader en 2014. Una charla muy amigable y entretenida sobre las novedades de ONCE HUMAN, sobre cómo es colaborar con una leyenda como Rob Flynn, meterse en problemas mientras grabas un vídeo, o por qué se metió una cámara por la garganta… ¡Entren y lean!
Iñigo Ortúñez (I.O.): Buenos días Lauren, estoy muy contento de poder charlar contigo sobre ONCE HUMAN, sobre ti y sobre todo, ¡sobre buen Metal! ¿Qué tal estás?
Lauren Hart (L.H.): ¡Estoy genial! Gracias, ¿cómo estás tú?
I.O.: Yo también estoy bien. Bueno, lo primero, enhorabuena por vuestro nuevo disco “Scar Weaver”. Por lo que he podido escuchar, es una nueva demonstración de potente y abrasador buen METAL. Me imagino que estaréis todos impacientes para el lanzamiento oficial en febrero de 2022.
L.H.: ¡Muchísimas gracias! Sí, estamos muy emocionados por el lanzamiento y no podemos esperar a que los fans tengan el disco y escuchemos lo que opinan de él.
I.O.: ¡El disco suena como una bola de demolición! Habéis publicado ya 3 tremendos vídeos para los singles, “Cold arrival”, “Only in death” (mi favorito) y “Deadlock”. ¿Qué nos puedes contar de esos 3 singles y sus vídeos?
L.H.: Me encanta saber que “Only in death” es tu favorito, pues le hicimos entre Logan y yo solos. Decidimos hacer algo muy personal, porque la canción es muy personal también. Fuimos a una capilla cerca de dónde vivo, en mitad de un bosque, aunque se supone que no podíamos estar allí grabando. Nos metimos en problemas un par de veces… ¡pero continuamos volviendo! Jajaja…
El de “Cold arrival” lo acabamos de lanzar. Lo grabamos mientras estábamos de gira hace poco con CRADLE OF FILTH. ONCE HUMAN nunca había tenido un vídeo con imágenes de directo, así que queríamos darle eso a los fans. Saldrán más videos, porque como el lanzamiento se ha prolongado mucho en el tiempo por culpa de la situación mundial, hemos decidido grabar más.
I.O.: Bueno, y luego está el vídeo de “Deadlock”, ¡dónde colabora una leyenda como Rob Flynn! Me imagino que habrá sido una pasada para ti hacerlo, ¿no?
L.H.: ¡En mi vida me hubiera imaginado hacer un vídeo o una canción con D. Rob Flynn! Teníamos esa canción y había trozos en ella que no había conseguido completar en cuanto a las melodías y las letras. Pensaba que a la canción le faltaba un poco más de ritmo, algo tipo al Nu-Metal, pero yo no puedo cantar de esa manera, así que pensamos que podría estar bien tener una colaboración en el tema. Logan y yo pensamos inmediatamente en Rob, pero no creíamos que aceptaría, pues no suele hacer colaboraciones.
Le mandamos la canción, ¡y le encantó! Estábamos flipando. Él nos devolvió la canción y no había rellenado las partes que le faltaban… si no que quitó todo mi estribillo y ¡metió el suyo! Yo pensé, “¡Eh! ¿Dónde está mi estribillo?”. Pero según lo oí, era increíble, ¡mucho mejor que el mío! Consiguió que la canción fuera más inmediata, tuviera más gancho. Tampoco pensábamos que querría salir en el vídeo… pero ahí estuvo con nosotros también en el escenario grabándola. Muchos momentos increíbles para nosotros.
I.O.: ¡Joder! Estoy de acuerdo que la canción tiene una vibración diferente, probablemente por la forma en la que la canta Rob, y creo que funciona de maravilla con tu voz.
Han pasado ya 7 años desde la salida de vuestro primer disco “The life I remember”, ¿cómo describirías la evolución de la banda en estos 7 años y el sonido de vuestro nuevo disco “Scar Weaver”?
L.H.: Hay una gran diferencia entre “Scar Weaver” y el primer disco. La principal es la entrada de Max Karon como guitarrista, quien se convirtió en nuestro principal compositor. Entró para el segundo disco y por eso lo llamamos “Evolution”. Musicalmente es extremadamente desafiante, es como un alien conectado a otros planetas de dónde saca esos riffs.
Su música hace que tengas que intensificar mi voz, al principio estaba algo intimidada por ello y pensaba que no podría escribir nada por encima de esa música. Pero poco a poco le fui pillando el truco; empecé a escribir de una manera mucho más personal (en el primer disco básicamente escribía cosas que sonaran chulas), pero en “Evolution” empecé a mirar a mi interior y escribir cosas que significaran algo para mí. Cuando eres honesto contigo mismo, escribes cosas que conectan mejor con la gente.
I.O.: No sabía que Max era el principal compositor, pensé que sería Logan. Sé que tú escribes las letras normalmente, me imagino que también habrá sido así en “Scar Weaver”. ¿De qué hablan las letras del nuevo disco?
L.H.: Cada canción es diferente, ya que la inspiración me viene de manera diferente. Muchas veces escribo las melodías y las letras van saliendo solas. Otras veces escribo de cosas que pasan en el mundo o en mi vida personal, como por ejemplo “Cold arrival” que habla de un amigo que murió de manera inesperada en 2020. Lo llevé peor de lo esperado, porque fue mi primera experiencia cercana con la muerte. Necesitaba escribir sobre eso. Pero no hay una temática específica, es una mezcla de muchas cosas.
I.O.: ¿Cómo es trabajar con un músico tan experimentado como Logan Mader? Además es un Productor muy respetado; no sé si eso añade cierta presión al resto de miembros de la banda…
L.H.: ¡Estoy muy malcriada teniéndole como Productor! Jajaja… me hace sonar absolutamente increíble. No creo que los chicos estén intimidados por él, Logan es claramente el líder de la banda y siempre le escuchamos. Además en el escenario es una pasada, un gran showman.
I.O.: Vamos a hablar un poco de ti. ¿Quién es Lauren Hart?, ¿Cómo entraste en el mundo del Metal y quiénes fueron tus principales referencias cuando empezaste?
L.H.: Cuando estaba en el Instituto empecé a salir con gente del mundo del Punk Rock, me gustaba su actitud “anti-sistema”, aunque no mucho su música. Más tarde empecé a salir con metaleros, porque su música me voló la cabeza, era como coger la música clásica y ¡subir la potencia a tope!
Mi primer disco fue el “Trilogy” de YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, y en esa época quería convertirme en una gran guitarrista. Luego salió el “Wages of Sin” de ARCH ENEMY y pensé, “¡Dios mío, el cantante suena increíble!”, y mis amigos me dijeron, “¡No! ¡Es una chica!, y me cabeza explotó. Mis bandas favoritas cuando empecé a meterme en el mundillo eran OPETH, DIMMU BORGIR, incluso aprendí a conducir con su “Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia”, cosa que por cierto, no recomiendo, jajaja… También me encantaban STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, IN FLAMES…
I.O.: Mencionabas la confusión con Angela en ARCH ENEMY y tengo que contarte que me pasó lo mismo ayer, que le puse ONCE HUMAN a mi hija de 11 años y le dije que iba a entrevistar al cantante. Jajaja… no se podía creer que fuera una mujer la que cantaba.
Por cierto, ¿cómo conociste a Logan Mader y entraste en ONCE HUMAN?
L.H.: Bueno, pues subí un par de vídeos tocando la guitarra a YouTube o Facebook, no me acuerdo… tocando riffs muy rápidos y tal, pero no puedo decir que fuera muy buena. No sé muy bien cómo, pero los vio un tío que había trabajado en A&R para RoadRunner y se los mandó a Monte Connor (antiguo Vicepresidente en RoadRunner) que era el capo de Nuclear Blast, y le dijo: “Hey Monte, ¿crees que podrías montar algo alrededor de esta tía?”. Y Monte se lo mandó a Logan, quién dijo “OK, ¡mandádmela!”. Logan había hecho este tipo de trabajos de producción, de montar una banda alrededor de un artista y lanzarles al mercado.
Cuando empezamos a escribir música juntos, se enganchó muchísimo, le gustó mucho el tipo de Metal que yo quería hacer. Él estaba haciendo cosas más orientadas a la radio en ese momento, pero le gustó ese tipo de Metal, sin voces limpias, todo muy agresivo… Tuvimos una gran sintonía escribiendo música juntos y dijo “quiero tocar aquí”. Al principio quería tocar el bajo y yo tocaba la guitarra, pero muy rápido él se pasó a la guitarra y yo realmente quería ser la “screamer”, porque no era tan buena en la guitarra. ¡Y así empezamos!
I.O.: ¿Por qué decidiste que querías cantar con ese estilo tan agresivo? ¿Has tenido algún profesor para que te enseñe la técnica?, ¿Cómo preparas tu voz cuando sales de gira?
L.H.: Nunca he tenido clases de guturales. Cuando empecé en el Instituto, lo hacía mal y acaba sangrando de la garganta muchas veces, pero pensaba “¡mirad qué guay que soy, que me sale sangre de la garganta todo el tiempo!”. He hecho mucho teatro y clases de interpretación y eso me ha ayudado mucho. Una de las clases era sobre “voz”, principalmente para enseñarme a respirar y a proyectar mi voz a una audiencia que estuviera lejos. Uso muchos de esos ejercicios cuando canto, incluso me metí una cámara por la garganta para evaluar cómo chillaba. Mis cuerdas vocales nunca se tocan, con lo que no hay daño. Es todo lo que hay alrededor de las cuerdas lo que vibra.
I.O.: ¡Joder! ¿Pero quién te ha enseñado todo eso? Porque es como ciencia ficción para mí…
L.H.: Hay un vídeo que puedes ver en YouTube, dónde la cámara baja por mi garganta y puedes ver el interior. ¡Parece una película de Alien! Así que me ha ayudado el teatro, la respiración… bueno y la gran Melissa Cross se cruzó en mi camino cuando necesitaba aprender a transicionar entre los guturales y las voces limpias sin problemas, porque me costaba mucho. También me ayudó cuando estuve muy enferma y necesitaba recuperarme para volver a los escenarios. ¡Es una pasada!
Para prepararme antes de una gira, necesito empezar 2 semanas antes, y poco a poco voy practicando hasta conseguir cantar el set entero y algo más. Además necesitas estar en muy buena forma para este trabajo, porque hay mucha respiración, muchos saltos, mucho movimiento…
I.O.: Hubo gente que te conoció por tu colaboración con KAMELOT en algunas de sus canciones del último disco “The Shadow Theory”. ¿Cómo fue la experiencia de grabar y girar con ellos?
L.H.: ¡Yeah! Giré con ellos por todo el mundo durante 2-3 años. Fue una pasada… algunos de los momentos más alucinantes de mi vida han pasado con la gente de KAMELOT. Los conciertos eran tremendos y aprendí mucho de mi voz también, me ayudó mucho con mis voces limpias. ¡El primer concierto que hice con ellos fue abriendo para IRON MAIDEN! Pero bueno, ha sido una constante en mi vida, porque el primer show con ONCE HUMAN fue abriendo para FEAR FACTORY.
I.O.: Es curioso… algunos de los riffs de ONCE HUMAN, me recuerdan un poquito a FEAR FACTORY. Por cierto, que hablando de conciertos, ¿Qué planes de gira tiene ONCE HUMAN para 2022? ¿Tendremos la suerte de poder veros en España, solos o con otra banda?
L.H.: Sí, hay planes y espero que ocurran, pero es complicado prometer nada estos días. Tendremos que esperar a ver. Y España está en los planes, sí…
I.O.: ¡Cojonudo! Cambiando de tema… El camino para las mujeres en el mundo del Rock/Metal nunca ha sido fácil y quizás por eso, las que triunfáis tenéis una calidad por encima de la media. En todo caso, sigue siendo raro ver a mujeres tocar la guitarra, bajo o batería en una banda famosa.
L.H.: Pues no sé por qué no hay más mujeres tocando instrumentos en las bandas. Puedo pensar en muchas chicas que tocan muy bien, como Nita Strauss, o bandas enteras de chicas como NERVOSA. No creo que yo haya tenido que demostrar más que un hombre, la verdad. De hecho, ser una mujer en una banda de Metal es un activo, da más publicidad. Yo empecé en el Metal más tarde que otras mujeres, quizás Angela Gossow sintió algo de esa presión cuando empezó, seguro que tuvo que pasar por muchas cosas… Pero hoy en día, la gente tiene la mentalidad más abierta, no sólo en el Metal, si no en el mundo en general.

We recently had the time to chat with Lauren Hart, the amazing vocalist of Groove Metal combo ONCE HUMAN, formed by legendary MACHINE HEAD and SOULFLY guitarist Logan Mader in 2014. It was a very friendly and interesting conversation about many the news from ONCE HUMAN, how it is collaborating with a legend as Rob Flynn, getting in trouble while shooting a video, or why she got a camera down the throat… Come and read!
Iñigo Ortúñez (I.O.): Good morning Lauren, I’m really happy to have the chance to talk to you about ONCE HUMAN, about you and about good Metal overall! How are you doing?
Lauren Hart (L.H.): I’m doing great! Thank you. How about you?
I.O.: I’m also doing fine. Well, first of all, congratulations for your new record, “Scar Weaver”. From what I’ve been able to hear, it’s a new statement of strong and face melting good METAL. I guess all of you must be eager for the official release in February 2022.
L.H.: Thank you so much! Yes, we are all very excited about the release, we can’t wait for the fans having the album and knowing their opinion about it.
I.O.: The album sounds like a wrecking ball! You have already released 3 great videos, for the singles “Cold arrival”, “Only in death” (my favorite one) and “Deadlock”. What can you tell us about these 3 singles and their videos?
L.H.: I appreciate to hear that “Only in death” is your favorite as it’s the one that Logan and I did on ourselves. We decided to go very personal on the video, as the song is also very personal. There is a Chapel close to where I live, in the middle of the forest and we weren’t supposed to be in there. We got in trouble a couple of times… but we went on coming back! Haha… I’m glad it’s your favorite!
The one for “Cold arrival” has just been released. We shot that one will we were on tour with CRADLE OF FILTH recently. ONCE HUMAN didn’t have any kind of “live video”, so we wanted to give this to the fans. There will be more videos coming out, because as we had a so long release due to the worldwide situation, we decided to record more.
I.O.: And you also have the video of “Deadlock” with a legend such as Robb Flynn! I guess it had to be very exciting for you to do it!
L.H.: I was not expecting in my entire life, to be doing a video or a song with Mr. Rob Flynn! We had this song and there were bits on it that I hadn’t completed as far as the lyrics and melodies. I thought the song needed a bit more rhythmics, maybe something like the Nu-Metal style, but I cannot do this kind of vocals, so we thought it would be nice if the album featured a guest. Logan and I immediately thought on Rob Flynn, we didn’t think he would do it, as he never makes guest spots.
So we sent him the song and he loved it! So we were fricking out! He sent back the song, not filling the holes it had… but he took my chorus away and he put his own one there! So I thought, “hey! Where is my chorus?”. But as soon as we heard it, it was incredible, much better than mine! He made the song more catchy, with a more immediate hook. We weren’t expecting him to be in the music video… and he was in too and he joined us on the stage! So many incredible moments for us.
I.O.: Whoa! I fully agree that the song has a different vibe, possibly due to the way of singing from Rob and it works perfectly with yours!
It has been already 7 years since the release of your first album, “The life I remember”, how would you describe the evolution of the band in these 7 years and the sound of this new “Scar Weaver”?
L.H.: There is a huge difference between “Scar Weaver” and the first album. The main one is the introduction of Max Karon as a guitar player and he became the main writer for us. In the first album he was not in the band and he came for the second, that’s why we called the album “Evolution”. Musically he is insanely challenging, he is alien-like and seems to be connected to other planets from where he gets his riffs.
His music makes me step up my vocals, I was a bit intimidated by his music at first and thought I could not write over something like that. But slowly I started to get it, I also started to write more personally (in the first album I was basically writing things that sounded cool), but in “Evolution” I started looking inside and writing things that mean something to me; when you are honest to yourself, you write things that connect better with the people.
I.O.: I didn’t know Max was the main songwriter, I thought it might be Logan. I know you are the main responsible for writing the lyrics. Is this also the case in “Scar Weaver”? What are the lyrics of this new album speaking about?
L.H.: Every song is different, as how I get the inspiration is also different. I usually start with melody and many times, the words just come out. Other times there are things happening in the world or in my personal life, like for instance “Cold arrival” is about a friend of ours that died very suddenly and unexpectedly. I took it a lot harder than expected, as it was my first close experience with death. So it was something I needed to write about. There is no specific topic in the lyrics, it’s a mix of many things.
I.O.: What can you tell us about working with a so experienced musician as Logan Mader? He is also a very reputable Producer, I’m not sure if this is adding pressure to the rest of the members of the band.
L.H.: I’m so spoiled rotten having him as a Producer! Haha… he makes me sound absolutely incredible. I don’t think the guys are intimidated by him, Logan is definitely the leader in the band and we always listen to him. And on stage he is also absolutely incredible, he is a showman.
I.O.: Let’s speak a bit about you. Who is Lauren Hart? How did you enter in the Metal world and who were your main musical references back in the day when you started?
L.H.: When I was at Junior High School I started hanging out with guys into Punk Rock, as I liked their “anti-establishment” attitude, but not so much their music. Later on I started to hang out with more Metalheads, as their music was mind blowing, like taking Classical music and turning up the power.
My first ever album I got was YNGWIE MALMSTEEN’s “Trilogy”, and in that day I really wanted to become a guitar player. Then ARCH ENEMY’s “Wages of Sin” came out and I thought “Oh my God, he sounds incredible”, and my friends told me, “No!, it’s a girl!” and my mind was blown away. My favorite bands at the time I started to get more involved, were OPETH, DIMMU BORGIR, I learnt to drive with their album “Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia”, which by the way I do not recommend to do, hahaha… and also STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, IN FLAMES…
I.O.: You mention about your confusion with Angela in ARCH ENEMY, and the same happened to me yesterday, when I put ONCE HUMAN to my 11 years old daughter and I told her I will interview the singer. She asked me, “And how is he?”. Hahaha… she could not believe it was a woman singing…
By the way, how do you get to know Logan Mader and finally enter in ONCE HUMAN?
L.H.: Well, I uploaded a couple of videos playing the guitar on YouTube or Facebook, I cannot remember… with fast picking riffs, but I could not say I was good. I don’t know how, but they ended in the hands of a previous A&R guy for RoadRunner and he sent them to Monte Conner (former VP at RoadRunner) who was the Head of Nuclear Blast and said him “Hey Monte, check out this girl, do you think you can build up something around her?”. And Monte sent it to Logan who said, “OK, bring her in”. As Logan has done this kind of production deals, where he builds a band around someone and sent it off for best.
When we started writing music together, he got very attached to the music, he liked the kind of metal that I wanted to do. He was doing more radio stuff at the time, but he liked doing this more Metal, with no clean vocals, very harsh… We really had a good vibe together writing music and he said “I’ll play on it”. At first he was playing bass, and I started as guitar, but soon he changed to guitar and I really wanted to be the screamer, I was not that good with the guitar. So that’s how we started!
I.O.: Why did you decided to sign with this so aggressive style? Have you had any teacher to learn the technic and how do you prepare your voice when you go on tour?
L.H.: I never had any scream training. When I was screaming back in the day, in Junior High School, I was doing it wrong and I would taste blood all the time, but I was thinking “look how cool I am, that I’m tasting blood in my throat all the time!”. I have done a lot of theater and acting classes, and that has helped me a lot. Voice was one of the classes, mostly to teach you how to breath and how to project to an audience which is far away. I use a lot of those exercises into my screaming, I even had a camera going down my throat to see the way I do my screams. The vocal cords never touch, so there is no damage done. It’s all the stuff around them that vibrate.
I.O.: Whoa! But somebody taught you this? As it looks like science fiction to me…
L.H.: There is video you can see on YouTube, where the camera goes down my throat and you can see it. It looks like an Alien movie! So it was the theater, the breathing… and then also Melissa Cross came into the picture when I needed to learn how to transition from screams to cleans seamlessly, as I had struggles with that. And she also helped me when I was very sick, in getting better for returning to stage. She is incredible!
In order to prepare for the Tour, I need to start 2 weeks before, and I slowly work up to the entire set and plus some. You need to stay in shape for this kind of work, you need to be very fit, there is a lot of breathing, jumping, moving…
I.O.: Some people know you from your collaborations with KAMELOT in some songs of their last album “The Shadow Theory”. How was the experience to record and tour with them?
L.H.: Yeah! I toured with them for about 2-3 years all around the world. It was insane… some of the most amazing moments in my life happened with the KAMELOT crew. The shows were incredible and I learnt a lot about my voice too. It helped me grow a lot on the cleans. The first show I did with them was opening for IRON MAIDEN!! It has been the same in my life, as the first show with ONCE HUMAN was opening for FEAR FACTORY!
I.O.: I have to say, that some riffs from ONCE HUMAN reminds me a bit to FEAR FACTORY! And speaking about touring, which plans does ONCE HUMAN have for 2022? Will we be lucky enough to see you in Spain? Maybe touring with another band?
L.H.: Yes, there are plans I hope they happen but it’s hard to promise anything these days. We will have to wait and see. And Spain is on them, yes…
I.O.: That’s great to hear!! Different topic… The road for women into the Rock and Metal scene has never been easy and maybe due to this, the ones that have success are because you have some capabilities over the standard. Anyway it’s still hard to see women playing drums, or guitar, or bass in well-known bands…
L.H.: I don’t know why not more women play instruments in bands. I can think of many girls I know that play, like Nita Strauss, or full female bands like NERVOSA. I don’t feel I had to prove myself more than a man. In fact, being a woman in a metal band is an asset, gives more attention. I came into Metal later than other women, maybe Angela Gossow felt some of this pressure when she started. I’m sure she went through a lot… But nowadays people are more open minded, not only in Metal but the entire world is like that now.
