Hablamos con Fredrick Hiitomaa, bajista de SISTER, sobre las novedades de la banda y mucho más!
PA: Hola Fredrik! Cómo estás? Todo bien en estos complicados tiempos con la pandemia?
FH: No es posible estar con nadie… pero todo va bien, la grabación del disco fue increíble y sí, estoy realmente bien, gracias.
PA: Me alegra oír eso. Bueno, estamos aquí porque SISTER tiene un nuevo álbum, Vengeance Ignited. Lo he estado escuchando y… suena muy bien, de verdad. Crudo, directo, pero también melódico. Muy buen material para directo, como Bring Out the Dead o Spitfire por ejemplo. Algunos singles y video-clips ya han sido publicados, cuéntame más sobre esto, por qué los habéis seleccionado primero?
FH: Bring Out the Dead: Es hora de volver, ya sabes, no estamos muertos! Vengeance Ignited, por ejemplo, es simplemente una gran canción. Estuvimos hablando con las discográficas y nuestro manager mientras decidíamos estas cosas y ellos dijeron: adelante! Las canciones seleccionadas son realmente buenas y pegadizas.
Cuando hablábamos sobre la pandemia, normalmente solíamos lanzar dos o tres canciones, pero el álbum se retrasó y por eso tenemos más singles de lo habitual y es genial.
PA: Muy buena selección desde mi punto de vista. Hay temas muy buenos en el álbum; Me gustan los discos anteriores de SISTER, pero creo que este tiene algo, lo he comentado con otros compañeros y todos sentimos lo mismo, espero lo mejor con este disco.
FH: Si, yo también; este es mi álbum debut con la banda, así que… yeah!
PA: Leí lo siguiente en una entrevista a Cari Crow “Cuando Frederick entró en la banda, fue como echar gasolina al fuego! Es muy enérgico, tiene muchas buenas ideas y aporta muy buena energía”. Muy bonitas palabras de tu colega. Tienes experiencia en otras bandas, supongo que toda esta experiencia ayuda.
FH: Sí, por supuesto, he estado tocando desde que era un niño, haciendo giras la mayor parte de mi vida. Experiencia, buena compañía y buen humor, estos son los ingredientes secretos.
PA: ¿Quiénes son tus mayores influencias en tu forma de tocar el bajo?
FH: Soy un gran, gran, gran fan de Aerosmith; Tom Hamilton, OMG!, es un gran bajista; D-A-D es una de mis grandes influencias también, por supuesto, KISS; básicamente old style, esas son mis influencias y me encantan; y también soy un gran fan del country.
PA: Qué piensas de la “New Wave Of Swedish Sleaze Metal”? SISTER suele se incluido en este grupo junto a bandas como CRASHDÏET, HARDCORE SUPERSTAR, DANGER, LOADED FUEL, NASTY IDOLS, …
FH: Puedo entender por qué es relevante, por ejemplo, Martin Sweet es el guitarrista de CRASHDÏET; todos los músicos de Suecia se conocen y por supuesto, hemos estado de gira juntos durante mucho tiempo, con HARDCORE SUPERSTAR, por ejemplo; conocemos los estilos de los demás y nos influenciamos mutuamente.
PA: Vuestros anteriores discos fueron producidos por Martin Sweet, además fue el anterior bajista hasta tu llegada a SISTER. Este álbum es producido por Jona Tee (productor y teclista de la banda H.E.A.T), cómo fue el proceso de grabación?
FH: Oh, con Jona? En mi experiencia, Jona tiene oído para estas cosas. Básicamente puedo tocar en el estudio y Jona dice: «amigo, eso es genial, sigue con ello». Llena la habitación de buena energía y de grandes ideas. Me gustaría pensar que Jona y yo hicimos “clic”. Me encanta trabajar con él y el resto de la banda, todos dan el 150%.
PA: Es complicado hablar de giras y eventos en vivo en estos tiempos, tenéis algún plan? ¿Cuál es su opinión sobre los eventos on-line?
FH: Mi sentimiento personal sobre los conciertos on-line es que son buenos y malos, porque no tienes la audiencia y la sensación de la sala y es una pena, pero es realmente bueno que existan y puedas vivir algo de Rock & Roll.
PA: Sí, opino lo mismo, también echo de menos los conciertos y festivales, ha pasado un año desde mi último concierto (y viaje)! H.E.A.T + CRASHDÏET + REACH en Estocolmo, estuve allí, ese fue mi último concierto de verdad.
FH: En Estocolmo? Qué bueno! Ojalá podamos volver a la normalidad pronto y volver a la carretera, eso es lo que nos gusta.
PA: Tenéis un nuevo acuerdo con Flick Agency, ¿qué esperáis de esta nueva relación?
FH: Básicamente, Flick es un sello sueco con sede en Estocolmo, por lo que la comunicación es mucho más fácil, básicamente es eso.
PA: Hablemos de tu equipo; ¿Cuántos bajos tienes? ¿Cuál es tu favorito para grabar y tu preferido para shows en vivo?
FH: Ohh, depende de lo que esté haciendo (risas).
PA: Como pueden ver en mi fondo (le muestro mis guitarras y equipo en la pared) soy un amante de los instrumentos y equipos y me encanta preguntar sobre este tema (risas).
FH: Eres un yonqui de las guitarras (risas)
PA: Completamente!
FH: Yo también soy un friki del sonido. Básicamente, soy un músico de jazz, ajusto los bajos a mis preferencias; por ejemplo, construí uno de mis bajos, no yo, mi técnico de bajos lo hizo por mí según mis especificaciones. Otras cosas que utilizo: Combo clásico, analógico, cajones de altavoces de 2×10 y 2×12, pedalera pequeña con afinador, compresor, también un boost, y un pequeño trim …

PA: Hello Fredrick, how are you? Everything fine in this complicated times within the pandemic?
FH: It´s not possible get in contact with anyone… but everything is great, the recording has been amazing and yeah, I am really good, thanks.
PA: Nice to hear that. So, we are here because you have a new record, Vengeance Ignited. I have been listening to it and man…, it sounds awesome, honestly. Raw, direct but melodic too. Very nice stuff for live shows, like Bring Out the Dead or Spitfire for example. Some singles and video clips are already out, Tell me more about why these ones were selected first.
FH: Bring out the dead: It´s comeback time, you know, we are not dead!
Vengeance Ignited, for example, it´s just a great song. We were talking with the labels and our manager while we were deciding these things and they said: just go for it. The songs selected were really good and catchy.
When we were talking about the pandemic, we would normally just release two or three songs, but the album was delayed and for this reason we have more singles than usual and it turned out great.
PA: Very nice selection from my point of view. There is some very good stuff in the album; I like the previous SISTER´s albums but I think this one has something, I have been talking with colleagues and we all feel the same, I hope for the best with this record.
FH: Yes, so do I; this is my debut album with the band, so yeah!
PA: I read the following in an interview with Cari Crow “When Frederick came in the band, it was like putting fuel on the fire! He is so energetic, he has a lot of good ideas and he´s just filling the room with good energy”. Very beautiful words from your colleague. You have experience in other bands, I suppose that all this experience helps.
FH: Yes of course, I have been playing since I was a kid, touring most of my life. Experience, good company and good moods, these are the secret ingredients.
PA: Who are you biggest influences in you bass playing?
FH: I am a really, really, really big fan of Aerosmith; Tom Hamilton, oh my god, is such a great bass player; D-A-D is one of my big influences also, of course KISS; basically old stuff, and those are my influences, I just love them; and I am a big country fan also.
PA: What do you think about the topic “New Wave Of Swedish Sleaze Metal”? SISTER is usually included in this group with bands like CRASHDÏET, HARDCORE SUPERSTAR, DANGER, LOADED FUEL, NASTY IDOLS, …
FH: I can understand why it is relevant, for example Martin Sweet is the guitar player from CRASHDÏET; every musician in Sweden knows each other and of course, we have toured together for a long time, with HARDCORE SUPERSTAR for example; we know each others styles and are influenced by each other.
PA: Your previous albums were produced by Martin Sweet, in addition he was the previous bassist until your arrival. This album is produced by Jona Tee (producer and keys on H.E.A.T band), how was the recording process?
FH: Ohh, with Jona? In my experience, Jona has the ear for this stuff. Basically I can play in the studio and Jona says: “dude that’s great, go with that”. He fills the room with good energy and such great ideas. I would like to think that Jona and I just clicked. I just love working with him and the rest of the band, everyone gives 150%.
PA: It´s complicated to talk about touring and live events in these times, any plans? What’s your opinion about broadcast and on-line events?
FH: My personal feeling about broadcast gigs are that they are good and bad, because you don’t have the audience and the feeling of the room and it´s a shame, but it´s really good that it exists and you can live some Rock&Roll.
PA: Yeah, same here, I am missing concerts and festivals too, it has been one year since my last concert (and trip)! H.E.A.T + CRASHDÏET + REACH in Stockholm, I was there, that was my last real concert.
FH: In Stockholm? Nice! Hopefully we can get back to normal soon, and back on the road, that’s what we love.
PA: You have a new agreement with Flick Agency, what do you expect from this new relationship?
FH: Basically, Flick is a Swedish label based in Stockholm so the communication is so much easier, basically it is that.
PA: Let´s talk about your gear; How many basses do you have? What is your favourite one for recording and your preferred one for live shows.
FH: Ohh, depends on what I am doing (laughs).
PA: As you can see in my background (I show him my guitars and gear on the wall) I am a music gear lover and I love to ask about this topic (laughs).
FH: You are a gear junkie (laughs).
PA: Absolutely!
FH: I am also a sound geek. Basically, I am a jazz player, I tweak them to my preferences; for example I built one of my bases, not me, my bass tech did it for me to my specifications. What else do I use? Classic combo, real analogue style, 2×10 and 2×12 cabinets, small pedal board with tuner, compressor, boost also and a small little trim …
