ENGLISH INTERVIEW BELOW

Johan Niemann (J.N.): ¡Muchas gracias!

I.O.: ¡Enhorabuena por vuestro nuevo disco “Escape of the Phoenix”!

I.O.: ¡La Producción es jodidamente brillante!

  • ”In Search of Truth” – el disco revolucionario.
  • ”The Inner Circle” – enormemente ambicioso e importante.
  • ”Monday Morning Apocalypse” – unos EVERGREY heavys y desnudos.
  • ”Hymns for the broken” – el Renacimiento.

Siempre.

I.O.: ¿Cuántos bajos tienes?

I.O.: Bueno, aquí va nuestro famoso Rock Angels Quiz para Johan Niemann:

Copyright Patric Ullaeus – Giannis Nakos
  • ¿DREAM THEATER o SYMPHONY X?

J.N.: Dream Theater.

J.N.: Hay muchísimos bajistas alucinantes ahora mismo.

I.O.: OK Johan, ¡muchas gracias por tu tiempo!

Mientras tanto, cuidaros mucho.

I.O.: ¡Genial! Lo habéis leído en Rock Angels Web & Radio. Haceros un favor y conseguid vuestra copia de “Escape of the Phoenix”, no os arrepentiréis.

Interview to EVERGREY (Johan Niemann)

Iñigo Ortúñez (I.O.): Hi Johan, it’s a real pleasure and big honor to speak to you. How are you? Let me send you a warm hello also from your Spanish friends Fernando (from Condensarock) and Luis Baños, they did an amazing radio program about EVERGREY some weeks ago.

Johan Niemann (J.N.): Thank you very much! Say hello to them too. Yes, I heard it was a success. That’s amazing.

I.O.: Congratulations for the new album “Escape of the Phoenix”! I made a review before the release of the album and I rated it with a 9,5/10. Some people asked me “where is the missing 0,5!!?”. After hearing it many times and enjoying the booklet and lyrics, I can agree with them, I was short in my evaluation. This is an absolute Masterpiece. I guess you must be very happy with the final result?

J.N.: Yes, I’m very happy with it. But it is nerve-wracking every time, because you just don’t know what people will think about it. I mean, we write music for ourselves, but once the record is released it is not ours anymore. It belongs to the fans.

I.O.: Album Sales nowadays are what they are… but yet I guess you must be happy that the album had a great entrance in many countries like Sweden, Switzerland, France, Germany and even in the USA Billboard. Were you expecting this?

J.N.: We are ecstatic. But I never expect these things, I’m beyond humbled. The fact that we are twelve albums in and people still want to hear new music is just…amazing.

I.O.: It’s nearly mandatory to ask this one: how did the COVID affect to this new album, to the writing and the general feeling? What can you tell us about the recording process?

J.N.: For us, it was mostly positive. We could work more or less uninterrupted. We had a couple of festivals booked that obviously got rescheduled which meant that we could be in our little creative ”bubble”.

Basically, it was just me and Jonas in the studio this time around. The guys would pop in from time to time, but the bulk of the drums and bass recordings were just him and me. That worked well this time because we hadn’t had time to rehearse the songs, so we were learning the songs as we were recording them.

I.O.: The booklet is as amazing as the music, starting from the amazing cover, but also all the images inside for each song and the promotional photos. Who are the masterminds behind it?

J.N.: The artwork is made by Giannis Nakos. He got fairly free reins to do whatever he wanted.

The photos and the videos are the product of Patric Ullaeus. We have worked with him for years and years.

I.O.: I think some of the songs are really powerful like “Forever outsider” or “Escape of the Phoenix” and others like “Stories” or “You from you” are much more intimate. I was hearing “Stories” when preparing the interview and I had goosebumps… as it happens every time I hear it. How can EVERGREY manage to write songs that can grab our hearts so much?

J.N.: I don’t know. It’s magic, haha. Thank you very much!

I.O.: Production is absolutely fucking brilliant! I think that Tom and Jonan took the lead on this together with producer Jacob Hansen. I cannot imagine a better production, so powerful, so crystal-clear… I guess this must have been an exhaustive process!

J.N.: Tom and Jonas were at the helm, yes. They love to sit and tinker for hours in front of that computer, looking for the right sound. I just don’t have that patience. But I’m very grateful that they do!

I.O.: Not a bad word to any of the past members, but I think this is your strongest line-up ever and the quality of the 4 last albums is the best prove. I’m honest when I say that I cannot think in other band whose last 4 albums in a whole are better than EVERGREY’s ones. I think every member is key to how this album sounds.

J.N.: Absolutely! And if it weren’t for the past members, we wouldn’t be where we are today. But I agree, we are in a very good place right now, as a band. There is much love and respect toward each other.

I.O.: This is a question from your friend and biggest EVERGREY expert in Spain, Luis Baños: “Can you explain in a few words which is the famous process you follow each time you write a new album?”

J.N.: Ah, Luis!! I don’t really think we have a formula we follow. We start by writing some music. Then we write some more. And sooner or later, there is a record. But there are many hours of hard work and trying different things.

I.O.: After having played in nearly a dozen bands, is EVERGREY the most ambitious band you have played, considering the complexity of the music? THERION was also a very interesting project, not only because you played with your brother Kristian.

J.N.: THERION was very ambitious since it incorporated classical ideas and instrumentation. We even did a couple of shows with an orchestra.

But in terms of complexity, I’d say that the records I made with MIND’S EYE are at the top.

EVERGREY isn’t really all that complex, technically, it’s more in the arrangements.

I.O.: Some talented bass players often have also influences in genres like jazz. Which was your main inspiration when you decided to play bass and you decided for metal music?

J.N.: My early heroes were Gene Simmons, Cliff Burton and Steve Harris. But I discovered Anthony Jackson early on. His playing on the old Al DiMeola records was mind-blowing. It still holds up to this day. He is still my no. 1 guy.

I was always drawn to rock and metal, so it wasn’t really a choice when I started playing.

I.O.: How confident are you as of today that you will be able to Tour this year? I have the date of November 5th tattooed in my brain. Last time I saw you in Pamplona on the “The Atlantic” tour, it was for sure one of the best concerts of my life… and I have hundreds on my back. I could also take nice pics with each of you guys…

J.N.: That is very nice to hear, thank you.

I am, however, not a very optimistic person, so I don’t think we will be touring this year. We have some shows booked in Nov/Dec, but I don’t know.

I.O.: Difficult question: will you be able to choose the 5 EVERGREY albums that you think summarizes better the career of the band and define each of them with a couple of words or a short sentence?

J.N.: Yes, very difficult, but here we go.

”Solitude, Dominance, Tragedy” – the album where EVERGREY became EVERGREY.

”In Search of Truth” – the breakthrough album.

”The Inner Circle” – hugely ambitious and important.

”Monday Morning Apocalypse” – a heavy, stripped down EVERGREY.

”Hymns for the broken” – the Rebirth.

I.O.:
One of the strongest points of EVERGREY in my opinion are the lyrics. Always intense, deep, melancholic… maybe not the best companion if you are a bit down, but always lyrics full of feelings and emotions. Which is the inspiration behind the lyrics of “Escape of the Phoenix” after the famous trilogy?

J.N.: As Tom says, he writes about himself, basically. His experiences and his view on things. Observe, internalize, filter, and then write.

I.O.: If you could choose one (different from your bandmates), with which musician you would love to play live or record a few songs?

J.N.: I’m a huge King Crimson fan, so I’d love to work with Robert Fripp. And I’d love to play with Al DiMeola. I love his old 70’s records.

I.O.: Can you remember any funny thing that has happened to you or EVERGREY, during any of your shows in Spain? Or maybe he most remarkable show.

J.N.: I have the worst memory ever, but on the last tour (I think) me, Jonas and Henrik had a day off or two in Madrid. That was awesome. Just hanging out, eating great food. Chilling. The shows are all amazing in Spain. Always.

I.O.: How many bass guitars do you own? Do you have one which is more special than the rest and why?

J.N.: I have three, I think. A Spector, a fretless Ibanez 5 string, and a Fender Precision. The Ibanez was my first good bass. I got it when I was 15. So I have to say the Ibanez, even though it is not very special at all.

I.O.: I feel EVERGREY is right now some kind of “cult” band. All of your fans we await your new music as the “mana” and your live shows are always outstanding. But fact is that you have never achieved the “super star” status. How do you feel about this?

J.N.: Of course, we would like to be bigger and to be able to tour with a bigger production. But fame for fame’s sake is a bit misguided, I think. It’s nice to get recognition for the work, of course, but the idea of World Domination is not really that important anymore.

I.O.: Here goes the famous Rock Angels Quiz for Johan Niemann:

  • DREAM THEATER or SYMPHONY X?

J.N.: DREAM THEATER. Because they showed the way for so many of us.

  • Touring or Recording at studio?

J.N.: Touring. Recording is fun, but can get tedious at times.

  • Name one metal band born in the 21st Century that you would recommend.

J.N.: Shameless self promotion: HOLLINGSHEAD. Not really ”metal” but…

  • Big Festival or Hot sweaty Club?

J.N.: Club.

  • Which is your favorite food?

J.N.: Right now, Italian. But I’ll eat anything. Sushi, Indian, Mexican.

  • Which is the crazies crowd you have ever played for?

J.N.: Many years ago, I played a show (with a different band) in El Salvador. That was nuts. They had way too many people in the venue, so the barricades broke down and we had to stop the show and wait until things settled down. Luckily, no one was hurt.

  • Which bass player today would you recommend? And which one from the past do you think was the most talented?

J.N.: There are so many amazing players right now. Hadrien Feraud, Henrik Linder, Janek Gwizdala, Vincen Garcia, the list goes on and on.

The old guys: Jaco Pastorious, James Jamerson and Anthony Jackson.

  • For newcomers, name the 2 best EVERGREY albums to understand the band.

J.N.: Having released 12 records, that is a really hard question. But if you want to know who we are right now, then I would suggest the latest two records.

I.O.: OK Johan, thanks for your time. It has been a huge pleasure!! I have been waiting for this moment for months. Any last message to the fans out there? We need to hear good news and hope for Metal!

J.N.: With a bit of luck, the world will return to some kind of normality. And then we will do some touring. Please come to a show if you can, hang out and say hi.

In the meantime, be safe and well.

I.O.: Great! You have heard it on Rock Angels Web & Radio. Now do yourself a favor and get your copy of “Escape of the Phoenix”, you will not regret it.
