Recientemente tuvimos la oportunidad de charlar con el gran Derrick Green, quién lleva cantando y dando la cara en los míticos SEPULTURA desde hace 25 años. Fue una charla muy amena, muy divertida y dónde hablamos sobre su nuevo disco “Sepulquarta”, su trayectoria y otros temas como el fútbol en Brasil, nuestro amor compartido por Eloy Casagrande y muchas anécdotas divertidas. Iñigo Ortúñez (I.O.): Buenas tardes Derrick, estoy realmente contento de poder charlar contigo. ¿Cómo va todo y por dónde andas ahora?
Derrick Green (D.G.): Fantástico, gracias. Estoy en Los Ángeles, California, que es dónde vivo ahora. Por cierto, ¿Dónde estás tú?
I.O.: En Burgos, una pequeña ciudad a 2 horas de Madrid.
D.G.: Oh… España! Mucho gusto, jajaja… (en un perfecto español). Sé un poco de español, pero necesito practicarlo un poco. Me ha ayudado mucho en Brasil, ya que puedo hablar un poco de “Portuñol”, como lo llaman allí, jajaja…
I.O.: Muchos fans, entre los que me incluyo, todavía estamos disfrutando de vuestro anterior disco, “Quadra”, que fue uno de los mejores lanzamientos de Metal en 2020 y en mi opinión, el disco más inspirado que has hecho con SEPULTURA. ¡Es un álbum alucinante!
D.G.: ¡Oh, muchas gracias! Para mí también es el mejor disco que he hecho desde que estoy en la banda. Esta formación actual ha hecho ya muchos Tours y hemos hecho 3 discos, así que nos conocemos bien. Nos tomamos nuestro tiempo en el proceso de escribirlo, no tuvimos la presión de sacar un disco rápido.
I.O.: Y ahora nos presentáis “Sepulquarta”, que será lanzado en agosto de este año. Yo conozco más o menos el proyecto, pero me encantaría que lo presentaras tú a los fans.
D.G.: ¡Claro! Como estábamos todos de confinamiento, empezamos a tener unas charlas semanales como una manera de mantener en contacto a la banda, de mantener la energía fluyendo y de estar en contacto con los fans. Así que hablábamos cada miércoles sobre historias de las giras de SEPULTURA y de la propia banda.
Entonces empezamos a invitar a diferentes personas y luego a amigos para que tocaran con nosotros algunos temas de SEPULTURA. También invitamos a diferentes Organizaciones para que se dieran a conocer y ayudarles a conseguir algo de dinero. Definitivamente se convirtió en algo mucho más grande de lo que podíamos imaginar al principio. La idea de crear un disco de todo esto, vino mucho más tarde.
I.O.: No he podido ver todos los vídeos en YouTube, pero los que he visto molaban mucho, con un montón de colaboradores espectaculares como Scott Ian, Alex Skolnick, Rob Cavestany o David Ellefson. ¿Eráis vosotros los que llamabais a las personas o llegasteis a recibir peticiones?
D.G.: Empezamos nosotros llamando a algunos amigos a unirse a tocar, gente con la que habíamos girado o que admiramos. ¡Pero luego hubo gente que también quiso participar después de ver a algunas personas que lo habían hecho! Estábamos muy agradecidos… ¡fue alucinante!
I.O.: Llegaste a una banda que se había convertido en un gran éxito haciendo Thrash/Death, pero que estaban el proceso de cambiar a sonidos más Groove y Hardcore. La banda también cambió al cantante, cambio a tener un único guitarrista en vez de dos… y la verdad es que acabó perdiendo parte de su popularidad con tanto cambio. ¿Cómo ves tú la evolución de SEPULTURA desde que te uniste? Personalmente a mí me gusta la evolución y el hecho de que no hayáis intentado replicar “Arise” 20 veces más…
D.G.: Yo creo que ha sido una evolución fantástica. Cuando me uní a la banda quería principalmente que cada disco fuera mejor que el anterior, que fuéramos mejorando como músicos y creo que estamos en el camino, que nos conocemos mejor, entendemos mejor el proceso de creación, hemos aprendido con tantas giras y tocando con tantos otros artistas… Siempre nos retamos a salirnos un poco de la zona de confort y probar cosas que quizás inicialmente no sean muy cómodas para nosotros. No queremos que nos guíe el miedo al “¿Le gustará a la gente?”. Confiamos en nosotros mismos y en nuestras habilidades y nos centramos en crear música que nos guste tocar.
I.O.: Si, lo entiendo… como te digo, me encantan las bandas que no hacen 20 veces el mismo disco, porque me gusta la evolución y entiendo que para los músicos, tiene que ser aburrido hacer 20 veces el mismo disco.
D.G.: ¡100% de acuerdo! Soy un fan de la música y siempre he admirado a las bandas que han sido capaces de cambiar y evolucionar, por supuesto manteniendo los elementos que hacen reconocible al grupo. Es un reto, porque siempre tienes un montón de gente susurrándote a la oreja, los sellos, o algunos fans, que no quieren que evoluciones. Todo en este vida es cambio y evolución y pienso que lo natural es que en la música también lo sea.
I.O.: ¡Completamente de acuerdo! Vamos a cambiar de tema… ¿Sabías algo de fútbol cuando entraste en SEPULTURA? Estoy seguro que ya te has convertido en un fan de algún equipo de fútbol Brasileño, quizás para hacer la pelota a alguno de tus compañeros… jajaja… ¿Sao Paolo?, ¿Mineiro?
D.G.: Jajaja… te aseguro que no soy de esos equipos. Sabía muy poquito de fútbol. Se hizo más popular en USA a finales de los 70 cuando Pelé vino aquí. Siempre fue muy popular entre las mujeres en los Institutos. El fútbol femenino en USA es mucho más potente que el masculino. Además en los últimos 20 años, hay muchos más latinos en USA y eso ha creado una base de fans más grande.
Me encantó cuando fui a ver mi primer partido en Brasil y sentí la intensidad, todo el estadio vibraba, la gente saltando, la música… ¡Fue alucinante! Tenía la carne de gallina y me enamoré inmediatamente de esa energía. En Brasil tenemos nuestro propio equipo SEPULTURA con otros músicos y jugamos en algunas ocasiones… ¡Y hay mucha rivalidad! Cada vez que juego pienso, “¡Estos tíos se lo toman muy en serio!”, jajaja… Me dicen “Gringo, ¡Vete al banquillo, no tienes ni idea!”
Ahora me encanta el juego, verlo, jugarlo… incluso jugarlo en la video consola cuando estamos de gira es muy normal. En una gira hicimos como un Mundial, yo representando a USA, Andreas por Brasil, los de IN FLAMES por Suecia… Por cierto, que ¡Mi equipo en Brasil es el Palmeiras!
I.O.: ¿Y a tus compañeros les parece bien?
D.G.: ¡Qué va! Ni de coña… Cuando elegí mi equipo, Andreas estaba literalmente MUY decepcionado y cabreado. Una vez me puse la camiseta para ensayar, me dijo “No vuelvas a hacer eso nunca más… no lleves esa camiseta durante los ensayos.”. Jajaja… ¡es muy fan!
I.O. Ya veo, madre mía… Tú eres un cantante, pero también tocas la guitarra. Los viejos éxitos de SEPULTURA se escribieron para 2 guitarras, ¿Por qué no tocas más la guitarra o incluso contratáis a un segundo guitarrista?
D.G.: Realmente yo no soy un guitarrista, soy un vocalista y necesito centrarme al 100% en las voces. Si quisiera tocar la guitarra, necesitaría convertirme en un gran guitarrista y centrarme al 100%… pero necesito centrarme en las voces. Para Andreas es fantástico también porque le da mucho espacio para escribir y tocar con mucha potencia y claridad. La idea de meter a otro miembro no ha sido nunca considerada porque significaría muchas cosas, es como meter un miembro nuevo a una familia.
Muchas de las bandas que admiramos tienen un único guitarrista y trabajamos para adaptar las canciones antiguas a una única guitarra, con el bajo rellenando algunas partes que debieran ser de guitarra y creemos que realmente está funcionando.
I.O.: Te tengo que decir que Eloy Casagrande es mi batería favorito hoy en día. ¡Es una absoluta bestia! Y tan joven…
D.G.: ¡Yeah! Es una bestia en la batería. Yo era fan suyo antes de que se uniera a la banda y es el complemento perfecto a SEPULTURA. Es joven, tiene la energía, la disciplina y las habilidades de tocar muy heavy pero al mismo tiempo muy entretenido. Puede tocar muchos estilos distintos y eso ha ayudado a la banda también.
Me encanta ver a muchos baterías famosos que están de gira con nosotros y se sientan detrás para verle tocar y dicen “Dios mío… ¡Este tío es un fenómeno!”, como por ejemplo Lars Ulrich, cuando tocamos con METALLICA. Nunca he visto a nadie de este calibre y con esta edad y además sigue mejorando día a día.
I.O.: Si tío… la última vez que os vi en directo, durante las 2 primeras canciones sólo pude estar mirándole a él… hasta que me dije “¡Vamos! Disfruta de todo el show…”, jajaja…
D.G.: Yeah… ¡Si es que me pasa a mí! Es que a veces cambia algunas cosas y me giro y le dijo “Dios mío… ¿has hecho eso?”
I.O.: Brasil y USA son ambos países americanos con una historia similar de inmigrantes europeos que más tarde trajeron esclavos africanos. Eso ha modelado las sociedades tanto de Brasil como de USA. ¿Crees que SEPULTURA representa cómo de integrada está la Sociedad brasileña, ya que Andreas tiene raíces alemanas y ambos Paolo y Eloy portuguesas?
D.G.: ¡Absolutamente! Y todos esos elementos los puedes escuchar en SEPULTURA y me encanta. Brasil es un país muy especial y eso aporta muchos elementos, sobre todo en las secciones rítmicas, que conforman el sonido de la banda. Pienso que es muy importante para la banda el tener siempre un batería brasileño. Otros elementos más del Hardcore los traje yo a la mesa de SEPULTURA, aunque de alguna manera ya estaban ahí y se pueden escuchar en cosas del “Chaos A.D.”. Andreas está muy influenciado por los guitarristas clásicos de Europa también.
I.O.: ¿Cómo de realista ves a día de hoy que toquéis este año en algún festival veraniego?
D.G.: No vamos a tocar en ninguno en 2021, desafortunadamente. En 2022 iremos a Europa a hacer festivales en verano, ¡como el Resurrection Fest en España! Tenemos organizado una gira en noviembre-diciembre de este año en Europa y estoy rezando para que se pueda hacer. Cuanta más gente se vacune, más ayudaremos a la comunidad y crecerán las posibilidades de que la gira se pueda hacer. Las cosas están mejorando aquí y se están haciendo muchos shows… ¡Hay luz al final del túnel!
I.O.: ¡Sí! Durante algún tiempo corrió el rumor de que una de las ciudades de la parte española de la gira podría ser Burgos, mi ciudad, pero finalmente no pudo ser… ¡Una pena! Así que tendré que ir a Pamplona a ver vuestro concierto. Conozco la Sala y ¡seguro que será un concierto muy caliente!
D.G.: Oh tío, qué pena… “vale, vale” (en español). Me encanta tocar en lugares o incluso países dónde no hayamos tocado antes, nosotros lo disfrutamos y puedes sentir la emoción en la gente. Nos encanta tocar en España y son 3 buenos sitios, Madrid, Barcelona y Pamplona.
I.O.: Una pregunta difícil ahora… ¿Podrías decirme tus 3 discos favoritos de SEPULTURA y describirlos con una frase corta?
D.G.: OK, lo intento…
– “Arise”: Dónde empecé a entender lo que era SEPULTURA.
– “Against”: Mis inicios en el grupo, todo el mundo estaba en nuestra contra y ¡nosotros estábamos en contra de toda esa negatividad!
– “Quadra”: Pienso que es lo mejor que hemos hecho como grupo, ¡Le hemos volado la cabeza a mucha gente!
I.O.: Siendo un americano cantando en una banda brasileña, estoy seguro de que te han pasado un montón de cosas divertidas o extrañas debido a temas de idioma o diferencias culturales. ¿Podrías contarnos algún momento divertido?
D.G.: Cuando me mudé a Brasil, tuve que aprender portugués y soy algo perezoso. Era completamente nuevo para mí. Recuerdo que estaba en un Hotel yo solo y necesitaba un rollo de papel higiénico. Conocía unas pocas palabras en portugués y una de ellas era “bunda” (culo) y otra era “papel” (papel), así que iba por el hotel preguntando por “papel de bunda” y los tíos del hotel se morían de risa y durante 3 semanas, cada vez que me veían por el hotel, me gritaban “¡Eh! ¡Papel de bunda!”. ¡Nunca hubiera imaginado que lo llamaban “papel higiénico”!

D.G.: “¡Gracias amigo!”. Estamos deseando Volver a España. Queremos veros a todos en las primeras filas, sudando, ¡porque vamos a tocar muy algo, muy heavy y muy rápido para vosotros!

Some days ago, I had the chance to talk to the great Derrick Green, who has been fronting the mighty SEPULTURA for the last 25 years. It was a very nice and funny talk, where we spoke about their new release “Sepulquarta”, his time in the band… and other topics such as Brazilian soccer, our shared love to Eloy Casagrande and many funny anecdotes. Iñigo Ortúñez (I.O.): Good afternoon Derrick, I’m really excited to have the chance to talk to you, how are you doing and where are you now?
Derrick Green (D.G.): I‘m fantastic, thank you. I’m in Los Angeles, California, where I live now. And where are you actually?
I.O.: In Burgos, small city 2 hours north from Madrid.
D.G.: Oh… España! Mucho gusto, haha… (in perfect Spanish). I know a bit of Spanish, but need to work speaking it. It has helped me a lot in Brazil, as I can speak some “Portuñol”, as they call it there, haha…
I.O.: Many fans like me are still really enjoying your previous album “Quadra”, as it was one of the best Metal releases in 2020 and in my opinion, the most inspired release you have ever done with SEPULTURA. It was an amazing album!!
D.G.: Oh, thank you so much! For me it’s the best release we have done since I’ve been in the band. This formation of the band has now toured a lot and worked in 3 albums, so we know each other well. We took our time in the writing process, we did not have the pressure for putting up a new album soon.
I.O.: And now you will present us “Sepulquarta”, that will be released in August this year. I know a bit about this Project, but I would like you to introduce it to the fans.
D.G.: Sure! As everyone was locked down, it was basically a way of keeping together the band by getting to speak once a week, keep the energy going and also stay connected with fans. So we were speaking every Wednesday about SEPULTURA tour stories and history and then we started inviting different guests and then it grew to inviting friends to jam with us over SEPULTURA songs. We also invited different Organizations to raise awareness of different topics and help them raising money. It definitely grew into something bigger that we could possibly imagine. The idea of creating an album about that, came much later!
I.O.: I have not seen all the videos on YouTube, but the ones I could see where really cool so with so many great collaborations like Scott Ian, Alex Skolnick, Rob Cavestany or David Ellefson. Where you calling the people with whom you wanted to collaborate with or you were receiving proposals from them?
D.G.: It started out by us asking some friends to join and jam, people we have toured with or we admired. But then there were people who wanted to participate, after they saw certain people that have joined! We were really thankful for that… it was very cool.
I.O.: You came into a band that had become very successful with the Thrash/Death sounds, but was in the process of changing to something more groove & hardcore oriented. The band also changed singer, moved to 1 guitar player only… and truth to say is that lost part of the popularity. How do you see the evolution of SEPULTURA since you joined it? I personally like evolution and the fact that you have not tried to replicate “Arise” 20 more times…
D.G.: I think it’s been a fantastic evolution. When I joined the band, I wanted that each album was better than the other and were improving as musicians and I think we are on the path, as we are getting to know each other better, we understand better the writing process, we’ve learned from touring and being inspired by other artists… We always challenges ourselves to really step out of the box and try things that may not seem comfortable at first. We don’t want to be guided by the fear of “People will like it?” We trust in ourselves and our abilities and we stay focused on creating music that we love to perform.
I.O.: I understand… as I said, I’m OK with bands that makes 20 times the same albums, but I love evolution and I guess for musicians, it has to be boring doing 20 times the same music!
D.G.: I agree 100%! I’m a fan of music and I’ve always admired bands that were able to change and evolve, but still keeping the elements of the band recognizable. It’s challenging as you always have a lot of people speaking at your ear, as Labels, or certain fans that may not want you to change. Everything in this world is evolving and I think it’s natural that music follows that way.
I.O.: Absolutely agree… Let’s change topic. Did you know anything about Soccer when you entered SEPULTURA? I guess that by this time, you have become supporter of any Brazilian soccer Club, maybe just to please any of your band mates…haha… Sao Paolo? Mineiro?
D.G.: Hahaha… It’s definitely not that Team, haha… I only knew very little about soccer. It became bigger by the end of 70’s when Pelé came to the US. And it’s always been very popular in women in High School. Women soccer in the US is much stronger than men soccer. Also in the last 20 years there are more Latin people in the US which also creates a bigger fanbase for soccer.
I loved when I went in Brazil to my first match and I saw the intensity, the stadium was shacking with people jumping and the music, it was insane! It gave me goosebumps… and I felt in love with that energy. In Brazil we have our own SEPULTURA Team with other musicians and we play for certain things… and there is a big rivalry, you know… each time we play I think “Oh my God, these guys are very serious!”, haha… They say “Gringo, set on the bench, you don’t know what you are doing!”
But I really love now the game, watching it, playing it… even playing videogames on Tour became something normal. In one Tour we played like a World Cup, with me playing US, Andreas playing Brazil, IN FLAMES playing Sweden… My Team in Brazil is Palmeiras!
I.O.: And your band mates are OK with this??
D.G.: No… not at all!! When I chose my Team, Andreas was literally SO disappointed and upset! When I weared my shirt in some practice, he told me “Do not do that again. Do not wear this shirt during practice”. It’s really fan…
I.O. I see, haha… You are mainly a singer, but you also play guitar. SEPULTURA old classics were written for 2 guitars, why are you not playing more or even hiring a second axe man?
D.G.: I’m really not a guitarist, I’m a vocalist and I really need to focus on vocals. If I want to play guitar, I would like to be a phenomenal guitar, and focus 100%… but I also want to do vocals that way. For Andreas it was also fantastic, as it gave him a lot of space to write and perform very powerfully and clearly. The idea of getting another member was never consider as it will mean a lot more, like adding a new member to a family.
There are many bands we admire with only 1 guitarist. We worked in playing the old songs with bass filling some of the old parts supposed for the guitar and we believe it works now.
I.O.: I have to say that currently Eloy Casagrande is my favorite drum player. He is just an absolute beast… and so young!!
D.G.: Yeah… he is a beast on drums! I was his fan even before he joined the band and he was the perfect match for SEPULTURA. He is young, he has the energy, the discipline and the skills to play heavy, but at the same time, entertaining. He can play different styles and this has helped also the band. I love to see many great drummers on tour, that just sit down to watch him and say “My God, this guy in phenomenal!”, like for example Lars Ulrich when we played with METALLICA. I’ve never seen anyone with this caliber at this age and he still keeps getting better and better.
I.O.: Last time I saw you live, during the first 2 songs I was only looking at him… so I had to tell to myself, “c’mon, enjoy the full show!!”. Haha…
D.G.: Yeah… it even happens to me! Because there are certain things that he changes here and there and I turn around and say “Oh my God… you did that?”.
I.O.: Brazil and USA are both American countries with a similar history of European Inmigrants which later brought African slaves. That has shaped both US and Brazilian societies. Do you think SEPULTURA shows how integrated Brazilian society is, as Andreas has German roots and both Paulo and Eloy Portuguese ones?
D.G.: Absolutely! And all those elements you can hear on SEPULTURA. And I love that. Brazil is very unique country and there are lots of elements, especially in the rhythm sections, that make part of the band. I think for the band it’s very important that they always had a Brazilian drummer. Other elements as hardcore, I brought to SEPULTURA table a little bit more, as they have always been there, maybe you can hear something on “Chaos A.D.”. Andreas is also very big influenced from the classic guitarists from Europe, as well.
I.O.: How feasible do you see as of today, that you will be doing some Summer Festivals?
D.G.: We are not going to be doing any on 2021, unfortunately. Only in 2022 we will be heading to the European Summer Festivals, like Resurrection Fest in Spain! We have a Tour set for November-December this year in Europe and I’m just praying that it will happen. The more that will get vaccinated, will help the community and the possibilities that we Tour will be bigger. Things are opening up here, a lot of shows are happening… there is light at the end of the tunnel.
I.O.: Yeah! During some time, I heard rumor that one of the cities for the Spanish shows could be Burgos, my home city, but finally not… what a pity! So I will have to go to Pamplona to see your show! I know he venue and it will be a very hot show!
D.G.: Oh man…”vale, vale”. I love playing in places or even countries we’ve never played before, for us it’s a joy and you can feel it in the people. We love playing in Spain and these are 3 good places, Madrid, Barcelona and Pamplona.
I.O.: Difficult question… Can you name your 3 favorite SEPULTURA albums and describe them with one word or short sentence?
D.G.: OK, I’ll try…
– “Arise”: where it all began with me, understanding SEPULTURA.
– “Against”: my beginning in the band, everyone was against us and we were against all the negativity out there!
– “Quadra”: I think it’s the top, we’ve done together as a group, we’ve blown the minds of many people.
I.O.: As an American guy fronting a Brazilian band, I’m sure that many funny or weird things has happened to you, due to language or cultural differences. Can you remember any funny moment?
D.G.: When I moved to Brazil, I had to learn Portuguese and I’m really lazy. It was completely new for me. I remember being at a Hotel by myself and I needed to get another roll of toilet paper. There were very few words I knew in Portuguese and one was “bunda” (ass) and also “papel” (paper), so I was asking for “papel de bunda!” and the guys in the Hotel were laughing histerically and during the next 3 weeks each time they will see me, they will shout “hey!! Papel de bunda!!” They call it “hygienic paper!”… haha… I’ve never would have guess that…
