El 18 de Marzo, Dennis DeYoung, legendario líder de la banda STYX y compositor de cinco hits legendarios en la discográfica del grupo,  retornó a Los Angeles por primera vez en solitario para hacer un show en el teatro «El rey» con todas las localidades agotadas. AXS-TV grabó el evento en alta definición para editar durante el 2014 un dvd que saldrá bajo el sello Frontiers records.

La radio FM en Los Angeles 100.3 The Sound ayudó en la promoción del evento con un show por la mañana donde contó con la presencia de Uncle Joe Benson ofreciendo un número limitado de tickets a los oyentes, con sólo 20 asientos disponibles para los ganadores. En tan sólo unas pocas horas tras el anuncio del show, las entradas se agotaron a un precio increíble en honor a los fans de tan sólo 5 dólares en gratitud a los que han apoyado a DeYoung todos estos años, el show fue realmente un regalo de agradecimiento a los que no le han visto tocar fuera de Styx en los Angeles nunca.

Las puertas abrieron a los 8:00 de la tarde, pero los fans ya hacían cola a la entrada desde las seis en Wilshire Boulevard con sus entradas en la mano y el comentario general era qué temas tocarían. Fotos y críticas del show anterior en Joliet, habían revelado que el guitarrista August Zadra se encargaría de la voz en algunos temas, y al compartir el increíble sonido de la banda tan cercano al disco era garantía de una noche especial para los fans de toda una vida, y aun así, lo que vieron esa noche fue una sorpresa absoluta.

El asombroso escenario fue diseñado por el hijo de DeYoung donde circulos parecidos a gemas brillaban a través de la cortina negra de un lado a otro del escenario como una manta de estrellas con los colores del arcoiris. Puntos de neon apuntaban arriba y abajo con un haz de luces que barrían al público. LLeno desde las primeras filas hasta el fondo del local, el interior del El Rey parecía más una noche en el Forum de 1985, sólo que mucho más grande y listo para emitir.

Abrieron el show con The Grand Illusion y la banda tocó durante hora y media, con un DeYoung interactuando con el público. En dos ocasiones recogió objetos lanzados por la audiencia que compartió con los asistentes. Uno era una copia del album Paradise Theater de Styx en vinilo, y el otro una petición hecha por un seguidor pidiendo su canción favorita, Desert Moon.

Entre el público asistente se encontraba el legendario vocalista y compositor Jeff Scott Soto, que compartió con nosotros la emoción de la experiencia.

«He sido fan de Dennis desde la primera vez que le oí cantar y por fin voy a obtener respuestas a preguntas que he querido hacerle durante años!, dijo Jeff, «por ejemplo, de qué va exactamente la letra de la canción I´m Okay?»

Dennis y los miembros de la banda dedicaron más de una hora de su tiempo personal arriba en un meet and greet con los fans y amigos que viven en Los Angeles y asistieron a la gala. AXS-Tv trajo ocho cámaras y un boom de más de 25 pies para capturar la magia del show y la producción de la casa ofreció simplemente el tono más pefecto que la banda pudiera crear para una noche que los fans podran disfrutar en DVD durante el resto de los tiempos.

Dennis DeYoung Records a new DVD at the El Rey in Los Angeles

On March 18th, 2014; Dennis DeYoung, the legendary front man of Styx and author of five key songs that define that band’s career, returned to Los Angeles for the first time during his solo career to a sold out show at the El Rey Theater. Recorded live for AXS-TV and captured in pristine HD quality, the performance has been slated for release later in 2014 on a DVD to feature Dennis DeYoung ‘Performing the Music of Styx.’

Los Angeles FM radio giant 100.3 The Sound aided in show promotion with morning show host Uncle Joe Benson offering tickets to listeners in limited supply, just 20 seats available to winning entrants. In just a few short hours of the show’s announcement, tickets sold out at an astounding fan appreciation price of just five dollars.  With gratitude to fans that have supported DeYoung over the years, the show was truly a gift of thanks to long time fans that haven’t seen him perform outside of Styx in Los Angeles, ever.

With doors opening at 8:00 pm, fans lined the sidewalk starting in the 6 o‘clock hour on Wilshire Boulevard with tickets in hand and the buzz was about what songs the band might perform. Photos and reviews of the previous show in Joliet, IL had revealed guitarist August Zadra taking the vocal lead on select songs and fans shared the amazing sound of the band being so close to the record it was guaranteed hit all the right chords with lifelong fans! Still, what patrons would get tonight was an absolute surprise.

The amazing stage set was designed by DeYoung’s son and through the black backdrop shone multiple gemlike circles that glowed from one side of the stage to the other like a blanket of stars with the colors of the rainbow. Neon-like spots aimed both high and low rained down an array of light that swept over the audience. Packed from the front of the stage to the back of the house, the inside of the El Rey seemed more like a night at the Forum in 1985; just bigger than life and ready for broadcast.

Opening the show with “The Grand Illusion,” the band performed for an hour and a half, and had DeYoung interacting with the crowd. On two occasions he was handed items that from the audience that he shared with fans. One was a copy of the Styx “Paradise Theater” album, on vinyl, and another was a fan-made sign requesting a personal song favorite – “Desert Moon.”

Among attending fans was legendary hard rock vocalist and songwriter Jeff Scott Soto, who shared with us his excitement of the experience.

“I’ve been a fan Dennis since the first time I heard him sing and for I’m actually going to get answers to questions I’ve wanted to ask him for years,” Jeff said, “for instance – exactly what is the opening lyric on the song I’m Okay about?”

Dennis and the members of the band took well over an hour of personal time upstairs at a VIP meet and greet with fans and Los Angeles based friends who attended the gala. AXS-TV brought in a 25+ foot boom arm and 8 cameras to capture the magic of the show and the house production offered simply the most crisp and well perfected tone the band could create for a night that fans are going to cherish on DVD for the “REST of Times.”
