“¿Te apetecería entrevistar a SKID ROW?”
“¿Estás de coña?” ¡¡¡Por supuesto!!!
Esta banda estaba sin dudarlo en mi Top 5 durante los años en los que me enamoré del Hard Rock y el Heavy Metal. Sus primeros lanzamientos son espectaculares… el perfecto ejemplo de cómo debería sonar el Rock/Metal.
Así que poder entrevistar a Dave “Snake” Sabo, es mucho más que un placer para mí…
Iñigo Ortúñez (I.O.): ¡Muy buenas tardes Dave! Una gozada poder charlar contigo, soy un gran fan de SKID ROW desde principios de los 90, ¡es un gran honor para mí! ¿Cómo estás?
Dave “Snake” Sabo (D.S.): ¡Estoy muy bien! Gracias por tomarte la molestia de hacer esta entrevista.
I.O.: ¡Es una placer para mí! Bueno, acabáis de grabar un disco llamado “The Gang’s all here” y quiero decirte que para mí, es vuestro disco más excitante desde el “Subhuman Race” de 1995.
D.S.: ¡Muchísimas gracias! Significa muchísimo para nosotros. Como sabrás tuvimos que hacer unos cambios relevantes en la banda; llegamos a un punto durante la grabación dónde pensamos que teníamos que cambiar las partes vocales porque ZP y el resto de la banda, estábamos yendo en distinta dirección. Fue una decisión difícil porque ZP es un buen tío. Pero ahora estamos extremadamente contentos con el resultado del disco y estamos deseando ver la reacción de los fans.
I.O.: Así que debemos entender que el disco se escribió entero antes de la entrada de Erik, ¿Correcto?
D.S.: Sí, fue escrito antes de que entrara Erik. Cuando recibimos la música de vuelta con sus voces pensamos “¡Joder! Así es como habíamos soñado que tenía que sonar este disco”. Cuando Erik escuchó la música de “The Gang’s all here” dijo: “esta es la razón por la que adoro SKID ROW”. ¡Qué gran comentario… fue un gran cumplido!
I.O.: A mí también me encanta “The Gang’s all here”. Es crudo, poderoso, pero con buenas melodías. El tipo de disco que puedes estar escuchando todo el día sin que te canse. Las letras son además como una declaración de intenciones de la banda, un ¡estamos más vivos que nunca! ¿Estabais mandando un mensaje a los fans?
D.S.: Nuestras canciones siempre expresan por lo que estamos pasando, lo que sentimos, tanto si hablan de ir de fiesta con tus amigos a un pub del centro, como si hablan de un renacimiento de la banda. Además tenemos un nuevo vocalista que ha traído un montón de energía y emoción. Cuando canta estas letras, ¡realmente las hace suyas!
I.O.: Hablemos por tanto de esa nueva cara en la banda, don Erik Grönwall. ¿Cómo le conocisteis y cómo os convencisteis de que era la mejor opción para la banda?
D.S.: Erik había estado en nuestro radar desde que hizo la audición de “Swedish Idol” (el Operación triunfo sueco) cantando nuestro “18 and life”. Alguien nos lo mandó y nos gustó mucho. Luego en 2018 y 2019 abrió para nosotros cuando cantaba en su anterior banda H.E.A.T. durante nuestra gira europea. Cantó muy bien y tenía una gran presencia. Aunque en aquel momento solo intercambiamos algunas frases de cortesía y no salimos a tomar nada.
Algo más tarde unos tipos de la industria musical nos dijeron, “hey tíos, sabemos que las cosas os van bien ahora, pero si alguna vez tuvierais que buscar cantante de nuevo, hay un tipo en Estocolmo que se llama Erik …”. Y le dijimos, “sí, le conocemos…”. Así que cuando nos vimos en ese punto, Rachel me sugirió contactarle. Nos acercamos a él a través de Instagram, preguntándole si quería cantar en algunas canciones que habíamos escrito. ¡Nos devolvió las canciones en 24 horas!
Rachel y Nic (Raskulinecz, su Productor) me llamaron diciendo, “¿lo has escuchado?”. Estaba en una sala de un aeropuerto, con lo que no tenía nada de privacidad… así que me metí en un baño, me puse el móvil en la oreja y lo escuché como 4 o 5 veces seguidas, pensando, “¿es tan bueno como creo que es?”. Era otro nivel tío, algo realmente impactante.
Así que Rachel y yo tuvimos una llamada por Zoom y Rachel fue directo al grano: “¿Qué te parecería ser el próximo cantante de SKID ROW?”. Él puso una cara algo rara, con lo que pensamos que diría, “lo siento tíos, no puedo… tengo otras cosas…”, pero lo que dijo fue, “¡estaría muy honrado de serlo!”. Teníamos cantante y nunca le habíamos visto o habíamos estado con él en una habitación juntos, ¡fue puro instinto!
Teníamos previsto tocar con SCORPIONS en unos conciertos que iban a hacer en Las Vegas, ¡así que ese iba a ser, ni más ni menos, el debut de Erik! Le conocí unos días antes en un aeropuerto, nos dimos un fuerte abrazo como si fuéramos viejos amigos y fuimos al bar a tomar unas cervezas y charlar. Luego tomamos el vuelo a Las Vegas, vimos al resto de tíos de la banda, tomamos más cervezas, charlamos durante horas… ¡parecía que nos conociéramos de hace mil años! Fue todo muy fácil, es un tío muy humilde y sencillo. Ensayamos un par de días y lo bordó, siendo además muy respetuoso en honrar a sus predecesores. Nuestro primer concierto con él, fue sólo 4 días después de conocerle…
I.O.: Durante mucho tiempo había estado diciendo a mis amigos que bien Erik o Girish Pradhan (de la banda india GIRISH & THE CHRONICLES) serían el perfecto cantante para vosotros. Vuestra elección ha sido muy bien recibida en Europa, dónde Erik es muy conocido.
D.S.: ¡Eso suena bien! Estamos muy contentos, de verdad.
I.O.: SKID ROW escribisteis 2 piedras angulares en la historia del Hard Rock y el Heavy Metal, como son el seminal “Skid Row” y mi favorito “Slave to the grind”. ¿Han sido siempre un trampolín para la banda, o alguna vez una pesada losa debido a las comparaciones?
D.S.: Es curioso, porque cuando tocamos las canciones nuevas en un concierto, encajan de maravilla con las viejas. Puedes saltar de “Big Guns” a “Tear it down”, o de “The Gang’s all here” a “Youth gone wild” y se solapan perfectamente.
Le doy mucho crédito a Nic Raskulinecz. Cuando empezó a trabajar con nosotros, dijo que quería intentar mejorar el disco y sobre todo, intentar recordarnos a nosotros mismos el quiénes éramos. Es un fan nuestro desde los inicios.
Cuando estás haciendo discos, intentas hacer cosas distintas en cada uno, no sonar muy repetitivo. Pero cuando haces eso durante 33 años, puede que mires atrás y pienses, “joder, estamos muy lejos de dónde empezamos”. Es verdad que ya no tenemos 21 años, pero la llama sigue estando en cada uno de nosotros, la esencia sigue ahí. Así que él quiso recapturarla y nos empujó a cada uno a buscarla muy dentro de nosotros.
Empezó a deconstruir y reconstruir todas las canciones. Estábamos todos tocando en la sala de ensayos y él estaba en la mitad, entre nosotros, los amplis y nos decía: “me encanta eso… y eso también… en esa otra parte, ¿por qué no intentas afrontarla como en el puente de “Monkey Business”?” Nos hizo ser muy creativos, fue una gran experiencia estar en ese entorno.
I.O.: ¡Pues ahora tenéis que poner todo eso en directo para los fans!
Leí en internet, nuevo tour europeo de SKID ROW. Cogí mi boli para apuntar una fecha en mi calendario de la cocina y… ¡qué cojones, no había fechas en España!
D.S.: Casi todas las fechas que estamos haciendo por el mundo, las teníamos ya agenciadas desde antes de la pandemia. Pero tranquilo, nuestro plan es girar mucho por Europa y además, ¡me encanta España!.
I.O.: Bueno, vamos con una pregunta más personal. Sé que has lidiado con problemas de salud mental durante gran parte de tu vida. Me imagino que ser una estrella del rock, tampoco ayuda, como se ve en muchos artistas. ¿Cómo te encuentras ahora?
D.S.: Bueno, es algo con lo que tengo que lidiar cada día, bien con terapia, medicación… porque no es algo que desaparece. La meditación y el yoga son buenas herramientas también. Yo en mi vida, quiero ser el mejor padre, marido, hijo, amigo y compañero de banda que pueda ser. Y la depresión se interpone en eso…
En los últimos 5 años, cada vez hay más recursos para ayudar a la gente. Cuando era un chaval y me diagnosticaron con depresión había un gran estigma y a la gente se le daba de lado, como si tuvieran lepra. No había investigación y la gente no hablaba del tema. Lo que te asusta, no lo quieres enfrentar… nadie se quería mezclar con el loco de Snake.
Una de las razones por las que hablo más del tema últimamente es porque quiero ayudar a eliminar ese estigma. Se investiga más y la gente está más receptiva, así que hablar del tema me ayuda a involucrarme más en esta labor de sensibilización. A veces la depresión acaba en suicidio, así que hay que empatizar más con la gente que lo sufre en silencio, como hice yo durante 20 años. Solo estos últimos 5 años, me he sentido con confianza para hablar de ello.
Algunos te dicen, “solo está en tu cabeza, ¡arréglalo tú solo!”. Y sí, está en la cabeza, pero es un problema fisiológico y el cerebro es el órgano más complejo del cuerpo. ¿Te imaginas que a alguien que se ha roto una pierna, o a un diabético que se ha quedado sin insulina, le digan “¡arréglalo tú solo!”. Soy muy apasionado con este tema.
I.O.: Muchísimas gracias por una respuesta tan honesta e íntima. Gente como tú podéis ayudar a muchísima gente que necesita ayuda.
D.S.: ¡Muchísimas gracias! Agradezco mucho tu pregunta y que me deis espacio para hablar de ello.

Algún músico con el que te gustaría sentarte a grabar algo o tocar con él? Si pudiera, con Steve Harris… ¡sería la leche!
I.O.: Estoy seguro que millones de fans querrían oír lo que saldría de esas sesiones, jajaja.
OK Dave, no quiero robarte más tiempo. Muchísimas gracias por esta charla tan amena y de nuevo, enhorabuena por el alucinante “The Gang’s all here”. ¿Algún último mensaje a los fans?
D.S.: ¡Muchísimas gracias por tus palabras, significan un montón, de verdad! Gracias a todos y cada uno de nuestros fans, sin vosotros, no existiríamos. Gracias por dejarnos que nos ganemos la vida tocando música, que es el regalo más grande que nos han hecho.
I.O.: Iba muy en serio cuando decía que tenéis que venir a España. Soy parte de una asociación llamada Burgos Heavy Metal y estaríamos encantados de traeros a Burgos si venís por España. Si trajimos hace poco a TESTAMENT y EXODUS, ¿por qué no a SKID ROW?
D.S.: ¡Cojonudo! Sería genial…

“Are you interested in interviewing SKID ROW?”
“Are you kidding me??” Of course!!!
This band was easily in my Top5 during the years I felt in love with Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. And their first releases are flawless… just a perfect example of how Rock/Metal should sound like. So facing an interview with Dave “Snake” Sabo is more than a pleasure, for me!!
Iñigo Ortúñez (I.O.): Hello, good afternoon Dave! Really happy to speak to you… I’m a huge fan of SKID ROW since the early 90s, so it’s a big honor for me! How are you doing?
Dave “Snake” Sabo (D.S.): I’m doing really well, thank you. Thanks for taking the time for doing this interview!
I.O.: It’s my pleasure! You have just released a new album called “The Gang’s all here” and I have to say it’s the most exciting SKID ROW album since “Subhuman race” from 1995. What are your feelings about it?
D.S.: Thank you so much! That means everything to us. As you will know, we have made some relevant changes in the band; there was a point when we were making the record that we thought we had to make a change vocally as we were really going on separate directions, ZP was going down his own path, different from the rest. It was a hard decision, as ZP is a good guy! But now we are extremely happy about the result of the album and we are eager to see the reaction of the fans.
I.O.: So we must understand that the album was written before Erik joined the band, right?
D.S.: Yes, it was written before Erik joined. And when we got the music back with his lyrics on, we thought, “Whoah! This is how we envisioned how the record should sound like”. When Erik heard “The Gang’s all here” he said, “that is the reason why I loved SKID ROW!”. What a great thing to say… it was a huge compliment!
I.O.: I must say that I love “The Gang’s all here”. It’s raw, it’s powerful, it’s catchy… it’s the kind of album that you can play all day long without getting tired to it. Also the lyrics are a clear statement from the band, that you are alive & kickin’! Were you trying to send a message to the fans out there?
D.S.: Our songs are always an expression of what we are going through, what we feel, whether it’s just about hanging out with your friends in a pub downtown, or feeling a real rebirth of the band. There is a new voice which brings new energy and new excitement. And when he sings these lyrics, he really owns them.
I.O.: Let’s speak about the new face in the gang, Mr. Erik Grönwall. How do you get to know him and how were you convinced he was the best choice for the band?
D.S.: Erik had been on our radar for quite some time, since he auditioned for Swedish Idol with our “18 and life” and someone sent it to us, and it was great. Then in 2018-19, he opened up with this previous band H.E.A.T. when we toured in Europe. He had a great voice and a great performance. We only exchanged some pleasantries in the hall, but we never hanged out.
Later on, some guys from the industry told us, “hey guys, I know things are good, but if you ever look again for a singer, there is this guy Erik from Stockholm…”. And we said, “yes, we know him!”. So when we were at that point, Rachel suggested me to reach out for him. So he contacted Erik on Instagram asking if he wanted to sing some songs we had written. And he sent the songs back in 24 hours! Rachel and Nic Raskulinecz (our producer) called me saying “have you listened to it??”. I was in an airport lounge with no privacy, so I went to a bathroom and put the mobile on my ears… and I listened to it like 4-5 times, thinking “is this really as good as I think it is?”. This was next level, a real game changer.
So Rachel and I had a Zoom call with him and Rachel got quickly to the point… “How do you feel about being the next singer of SKID ROW?”. He put a face that we thought he will say, “sorry guys I can’t do it… I’ve got this and that…”, but he said, “I would be honored to do it!”. We had never been in a room with him, to meet him, or jam with him! It was all going on instinct.
We were scheduled to perform with SCORPIONS on some resident shows in Las Vegas, so that were going to be our first shows with Erik! I met him a few days before in the airport, hug as we were old friends and went to the bar to have some beers. Then we took the plane to Las Vegas, met the rest of the guys, had more beers, talked for hours… it was like if we knew him for decades! He is a really humble guy, it was all very easy. We went into rehearsal for a couple of days and he did a great job in honoring what came before him. Our first show was only 4 days after we met him!
I.O.: I have to tell you that for some years I was telling my friends that either him or Girish Pradhan (from the Indian band GIRISH & THE CHRONICLES) would be the perfect fit for you guys. This match has been greatly appreciated in Europe, as he is very well known here.
D.S.: That’s great to hear. We are very happy too.
I.O.: SKID ROW have written 2 cornerstones of Hard Rock & Heavy Metal history, as the seminal “Skid Row” and my personal favorite “Slave to the grind”. Have they always been a big springboard for the band… or maybe sometimes a heavy load due to comparisons?
D.S.: It’s weird, because when we are playing all the new songs in the set, they fit perfectly with the old songs. You can go from “Big Guns” to “Tear it down”, or from “The Gang’s all here” to “Youth gone wild”, and they fit seamlessly.
I credit Raskulinecz a lot. When he first got involved with us, he said he wanted to improve our record and reintroduce us to ourselves. He has been a fan of us since our beginning. When you are doing records, you want to make things different on each record, not to be redundant. But when you do this during 33 years, you might look back and think: “we might be pretty far from where we started!”. We are not 21 years old anymore, but the fire still burns in all of us, the essence is still there. And he wanted to recapture it. He was pushing each of us to dig deeper into us.
He wanted to deconstruct and reconstruct all the songs. We were all rehearsing live in the studio and he was in the middle of the amps and was saying, “I love this, I love that… that one, why don’t you play that part as you would have done on the B-verse of Monkey Business?”. It made us be much more creative, it was a great experience to be involved in that environment.
I.O.: So now you have to put this live for the fans! I read on Internet, new SKID ROW European tour… so I got my pen to pencil down one date in my calendar, and… what the fuck! No dates in Spain!
D.S.: A lot of the shows we are doing now, were already booked from the pre-pandemic time. But don’t worry… we plan on touring Europe quite a bit. And I love Spain!
I.O.: OK, let’s go now a bit more personal. I know you have dealt with mental health issues most of your life. I guess being a rock star, becoming so famous when still young… is not easy, as we have seen with many musicians. How are you feeling nowadays?
D.S.: Well, it’s something that I deal with it every day and you have to manage it whether through therapy or medication or both, as it does not just go away. Meditation and yoga are also great tools. In life, I just want to be sure that I’m able to be the best father, husband, son, friend and band mate that I can possibly be. And depression gets in the middle of this.
Since the last 5 years, there is a lot more resources for people to get help. When I was a kid and I was diagnosed with manic depression, there was a lot of stigma and people was pushed away, like people with leprosy many years ago. There was no research about it, so people did not want to talk about it. What you fear, you don’t want to deal with… so no one wanted to deal with “crazy uncle Snake”.
Part of the reason why I have been speaking up about this lately, is because I want to be part in helping to remove the stigma. There’s being more research and people is getting more open to it, so for me speaking about it helps me to engage myself more in awareness. Depression leads sometimes to suicide, so we need to understand more the people who is going through it and is suffering it in silence, as I did for over 20 years. Only since 5 years ago I was enough confidence on myself to speak openly about it.
Some people think “it’s all in your head, fix it yourself”, and yes, it’s all in the head, but it’s a physiological thing, the brain is the most complicated organ in the body. Can you imagine saying to someone who broke his leg, or who has diabetes and no access to insulin, “fix it yourself”. I’m now very passionate about it.
I.O.: Thank you so much for your so open and intimate answer. People like you can help to many people out there that need help.
D.S.: Thank you so much! I do appreciate the question and the space to talk about it.
