JOEL HOEKSTRA (WHITESNAKE) – Entrevista / Interview

  • ¿Qué te hizo unirte a Whitesnake?

¡Si!

ENGLISH VERSION INTERVIEW

Yadira: – How is it touring with David Coverdale, both in studio and on tour?

Joel: David’s great, I feel like I’ve gained a big brother. It’s the first time that I’ve ever worked with somebody who is so supportive of me in terms of wanting me to play the way I play and just being encouraging over all, so I feel very lucky and very honored to work with him. Over all we just work doing it the way it should be right now, we’re just playing together as a band and having a great time together.

– I’ve been following you on Facebook and Instagram, and before going on tour you used to post pictures about you new customized guitars with the Whitesnake logo on them, they are so beautiful. Can you tell us a bit about them?

When I joined Whitesnake I took the opportunity to think: “well I’m gonna start with brand new gear for the tour”. So I reached out my favourite gear companies and I had a vision of having a black and a white Les Paul and a black and a white Strat, because of playing Deep Purple music, all of them with Whitesnake medallions embeded in the body.
So I went to a mint, Northwest Territorial Mint, and had them make 4 Whitesnake medallions so I gave two of them to Gibson and they put them in a white customized Paul and in a black customized Paul with a snake stencil on the top. All these people can look at them on my website or on my facebook or whatever if they want to go there. I did the same with Fender, with the Stratocasters so that all came refurbishing and then my friends at Atomic Guitar Works came with me with the idea of building me a purple crystal Les Paul style guitar for the tour and that’s what I ended up using for my solo. It’s really become a fan favourite, it’s really fun to look at, that gold crystal WS on the top (the Whitesnake logo) so it’s something really fun and exciting about starting in this band with all new gear and not just going out with gear that I’ve been using on past gigs.

– Actually it’s something that no one has done before in Whitesnake so you’re the first to have the customized guitars with the Whitesnake logo on them.

Yeah, thanks for noticing!

– You’ve also been pretty busy this last year, focusing a little bit on your career, when you weren’t in Rock of Ages you were in Trans Siberian Orchestra. Can you tell us a bit those projects? Are you planning to do something like that again or right now you are 100% focused on Whitesnake?

Well, right now I’m focused on the Whitesnake tour and I think as soon as it’s over I’ll probably work with David a bit on some other stuff. So for the inmediate future Whitesnake but of course I’m still promoting my album «Joel Hoekstra’s 13: Dying to Live» that just came out October 16th on Frontiers, so a lot of what I’m doing is supporting that as well right now.

– I wanted to ask you about that. You got the new album out, can you tell us a bit about it? When did record it and why did you decide to release it this year now that you are on tour with Whitesnake?

I started on it before I even auditioned for Whitesnake, so it was in the works. I put 3 solo albums out years ago that were instrumental guitar albums and I really built up a different fan base, so been 7-8 years playing with Night Ranger, Rock of Ages, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and of course Whitesnake, so a lot of those fans wanted to hear a melodic hard-rock album of me, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to be able to show my riding in that style and my production style and of course my guitar playing. So I just set up to do it and as it turned out step by step I really didn’t mean to do and all-star album but everybody said yes as I went and I really ended up coming up with a great line-up, one of the coolest line-ups ever played on a classic rock style album. With Vinny Appice on drums, Tony Franklin on bass, Russell Allen and Jeff Scott Soto were the singers, Derek Sherinian played the keyboards on it. I feel honoured to have all those guys on there, bring the songs to life and it was a great opportunity for me to make this album and like I said, get the exposure with Frontiers to have a worldwide release but to finally get the opportunity to just write the way I wanted to write in terms of the style. I wasn’t always as involved as I would have wanted to then with Night Ranger in that department, and starting out with Whitesnake with the Purple Album so it’s been a little bit of long haul for me to get there…

WhitesnakeGroup2

– So do you any plans of touring solo in the future, doing some collaborations or something like that?

Well, we will see. Obviously the situation has to be right and I want to represent the album in a high quality way so I’m just gonna see how that all plays out, much of it has to do with the way the album is received and the reviews so far have been stellar. In terms of public response, the big trick is just getting people to give it a chance so I think most people when they hear it, really really like it, but are not familiar with my name quite enough yet or certainly not the idea of me having a side project so like I said that’s the trick. Just getting the word out and getting the support up. I think people if they like melodic hard rock they will really like Dying to Live.

– What made you want to become a musician or guitarist? How did it start?

My parents are classical musicians so I grew up around music and they had me playing cello and piano at a very young age. But really it was hearing AC/DC, Black in Black, that made me wanna play guitar.

– That’s classical but in another way! Classic hard rock!

Exactly.

– Do you have another hobbies a part of playing guitar? What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like to follow the sports teams that I grew up with in the Chicago area, I’m a big Chicago Bulls fan for basketball, and Chicago Cugs for baseball. And from there, I really enjoy movies and I enjoy interacting with people that follow the music that I make and you can use the term «fans» I suppose but I do a lot of that. I’m a pretty simple guy.

joel2

– There would be one last question. What’s next for Whitesnake after the UK and Ireland shows, you are playing in December with Black Star Riders and Def Leppard. Any plans about coming to Spain?

Obviously it all goes on how David feels in and everybody in terms of what’s happening with Whitesnake but I can say that David is really enthused about the line up of the band and all we have going on right now so I think everybody can look for it to another really active year from Whitesnake.

– That would be all! Thank you very much for your time! Enjoy your free day!

Thanks to you for your time, really appreciate it.
