Charlamos con la encantadora Erica Ohlsson, vocalista de METALITE sobre el último álbum de la banda y mucho más!
Pablo ALL: Hola Erica, cómo estás? Todo bien?
Erica Ohlsoon: Estoy bien Pablo, qué tal estás tu?
PA: Me alegro, yo también estoy bien. Bueno, estamos aquí porque tienes un nuevo disco, A Virtual World. Dile a nuestros lectores lo que este nuevo álbum significa para ti, con tus propias palabras, qué podemos encontrar en él?
EO: Este es mi segundo álbum con METALITE, por supuesto que el primero también fue muy especial, pero las diferencias entre Biomechanical y A Virtual World es … Creo que tiene un “mood” más “happy”, el sonido, más melódico, … Biomechanical fue un poco un poco más oscuro, un poco más pesado. Creo que nuestros fans y el público no se sentirán decepcionados, espero que no (risas).
PA: Algunos singles y videoclips ya están disponibles, Cloud Connected, Peacekeepers y A Virtual World. ¿Estás de acuerdo con esta selección o elegirías otras diferentes? Cuéntame más sobre por qué se seleccionaron estos primero.
EO: En la banda estuvimos hablando sobre cuáles serían los mejores temas para sacar como singles; somos 5 personas con diferentes estilos y lo que pensamos sobre las canciones y por supuesto el sello también tenía algo que decir sobre eso. Pero al final, decidimos que Cloud Connected y Peacekeepers fueran los primeros y por supuesto A Virtual World porque es el nombre del álbum. Creo que la elección fue muy buena porque son bastante diferentes entre sí y es bueno pensar en eso cuando eliges singles.
PA: Sí, muy bien equilibrado. El concepto es sobre tecnología, futuro, electrónica… eres una verdadera tech-girl en tu día a día, ya sabes, todo el día usando un teléfono inteligente, reloj inteligente, equipos tecnológicos en tu casa, en tu coche,… en tu vida diaria?
EO: (Risas) No. No soy una chica muy tecnológica, no. Creo que es interesante, absolutamente, pero no soy buena en eso. Edwin es el compositor, tiene mucho interés en la ciencia ficción y la tecnología, por eso, las canciones tratan sobre esos temas. Creo que Edwin escribió las letras de una manera muy buena para describir cosas y metáforas con las que podemos relacionarnos en nuestras propias vidas.
PA: Cómo fue el proceso para unirte a la banda? Tienes experiencia previa en el mundo del espectáculo, verdad? En otras bandas también?
EO: No, no he estado en otras bandas, así que esta es mi primera y estoy muy feliz de estar en METALITE; el metal es algo nuevo para mí, mi experiencia como cantante era en realidad en el mundo del espectáculo. Así que no he cantado muchas canciones de metal, he estado cantando versiones y unirme a una banda con canciones originales es muy emocionante, estoy muy feliz.
PA: Tienes algún otro proyecto musical además de METALITE?
EO: No, ahora mismo no. Todo está cerrado en la industria de la música en este momento, acabamos de lanzar el tercer álbum y no tengo otros planes para el futuro cercano.
PA: ¿Estuviste involucrado en el proceso de escritura de canciones en este álbum?
EO: No, fue 100% Edwin.
PA: ¿Alguna vez te has involucrado en la escritura de canciones? ¿Tiene algún mantra, proceso o flujo de trabajo específico para crear música?
EO: Ojalá pudiera, pero en realidad nunca lo he intentado. Me fascina mucho que la gente haga eso, porque me gustaría poder hacerlo, escribiendo palabras y pensamientos, tal vez algún día, ya veremos (risas).
PA: Lo estoy deseando! (risas). Cómo fue el proceso de grabación? Cómo fue un día típico en el estudio?
EO: El proceso es algo así: Edwin escribe una música y la melodía de las canciones, me las envía y yo compruebo si la canción está en el tono correcto y todo lo demás. Luego ponemos algunas guitarras y batería para hacer una versión de demostración sencilla y luego vamos al estudio y grabamos las voces y armonías y completamos la canción.
PA: Lanzasteis la versión de Hunting High and Low de STRATOVARIUS. Estáis planeando más versiones como esta en el futuro?
EO: Nos encantan los covers, porque tomas una canción que te gusta y la haces a tu estilo. Recibimos muy buenas críticas por esa canción, así que espero que sí (risas). Creo que es divertido.
PA: Quiénes son tus mayores influencias en tu forma de cantar?
EO: Esta es una pregunta difícil … no sé si puedo quedarme sólo con una. Llevo mucho tiempo escuchando música rock. HALESTORM quizá, el sonido y su voz son increíbles … y Jessie J tiene una gran voz, pero no es una cantante de metal. Hay muchos buenos cantantes y músicos, tomo un poco de cada uno de los que me gustan.
PA: ¿Tienes estudios musicales?
EO: No, no tengo ninguna educación musical; Soy autodidacta.
PA: Oh, ¿en serio? Eso es impresionante, esperaba algo como: «He estado estudiando música y canto durante 15 años …»
PA: Tenéis una gira programada para septiembre en España.
EO: Sí, crucemos los dedos.
PA: ¿Cuál es su opinión sobre los eventos de transmisión on-line? Durante la pandemia muchas bandas han hecho cosas así.
EO: Prefiero los espectáculos reales, nos encanta estar en el escenario y tener una audiencia con la que puedas conectar y cantar juntos. Cuando nos golpeó la pandemia y comenzaron los eventos en línea, tuvimos la discusión sobre cómo hacerlo, pero no sé… En estos tiempos hay que hacer algo, así que veremos qué pasa, ahora mismo tenemos esta gira y algunos festivales aquí en Suecia, esperamos venir a España.

¿Qué canción te gusta más tocar en el escenario? Aún no tuvimos la posibilidad de tocar A Virtual World… De Biomechanical, Breakaway; y de Heroes of our time, The Hunter. Soy una fanática de las baladas, cuando son buenas baladas (risas).

No, creo que has hecho muy buenas preguntas, porque muchas entrevistas son siempre las mismas preguntas y has hecho un estilo diferente y eso me gusta, eres un muy buen entrevistador.

Pablo All: Hello Erica how are you? Everything fine?
Erica Ohlsoon: I am fine Pablo, How are you?
PA: Nice to hear that, I am OK too. So, we are here because you have a new record, A Virtual World. Tell our readers what this new album means to you, in your own words, what can we find on it?
EO: This is my second album with METALITE, of course the first was very special too, but the differences between Biomechanical and A Virtual World is… I think is more on a happy mood, happy sound, more melodic, … Biomechanical was a little bit darker, a bit heavier. I think our fans and the audience will not be disappointed, I hope not (laughs).
PA: Some singles and video clips are already out, the Cloud Connected, Peacekeepers, and A Virtual World. Do you agree with this selection or would you choose different ones? Tell me more about why these ones were selected first.
EO: Of course we talked about it, in the band, about which ones are the best to put out there as singles and we are 5 people with different styles and what we think about the songs and of course the label also had something to say about that. But in the end, we decided that Cloud Connected and Peacekeepers were the first ones and of course A Virtual World because it is the name of the album. I think the choice was very good because they are quite different to each other and that’s a good thing to think about when you choose singles.
PA: Yes, very well balanced. The concept is about technology, future, electronics… are you a real tech girl in your day to day, you know the whole day using smartphone, smart watch, tech gear in your home, in your car, … in your daily life?
EO: (Laughs) No. I am not a techy girl, no. I think it´s interesting, absolutely, but I am not good at it. Edwin is the songwriter, he has a lot of interest in Sci-Fi and technology, so that’s why the songs are about that actually. I think Edwin put down the words and the lyrics in a very good way to describe things and metaphors that we can relate to in our own lives.
PA: How was the process to join the band. You have previous experience in the show business, right? In other bands too?
EO: No, I haven´t been in other bands, so this is my first one and I am very happy to be in METALITE; metal is something new to me, my background as singer was in show business actually. So I haven´t sung a lot of metal songs, I have been singing covers and joining a band with originals songs is very exciting, I am very happy.
PA: Do you have any other music project in addition to METALITE?
EO: No, not right now. Everything is closed in the music industry right now, we just released the third album and I don’t have any other plans for the near future.
PA: Were you involved in the song writing process in this album?
EO: No, it was 100% Edwin.
PA: Have you ever got involved in song writing? Do you have some specific mantra, process or workflow to create music?
EO: I wish I could, but actually I never tried it. I am very fascinated by people doing that, because I wish I could do it, putting down words and thoughts, maybe one day, we will see (laughs)
PA: Looking forward to it! (laughs). How was the recording process? How was a typical day in the studio?
EO: The process is like, Edwin doing the song writing and the melody of the songs, he sends them to me and I check if the song is in the right key and everything. Then put some guitars and drums to make a light demo version and then we go to the studio and record the vocals and harmonies and complete the full song.
PA: You released the cover, Hunting High and Low from STRATOVARIUS. Are you planning more covers like this one in the future?
EO: We love covers, because you take a song that you like and do it to your style. We got some very nice reviews for that song, so I hope so (laughs) I think it is fun.
PA: Who are you biggest influences in you singing?
EO: That’s a tricky one… I don´t know if I have just one. I have been listening to rock music for a long time. I experienced HALESTORM and the sound and her voice are awesome… I will say her maybe, and Jessie J has a great voice, but she is not a metal singer. There are a lot of good singers and musicians, I take a little bit from the ones I love.
PA: Do you have any music studies?
EO: No, I don’t have any music education; I am self-taught.
PA: Oh, really? That’s impressive, I was expecting something like: “I have been studying music and singing for 15 years…”
PA: You already have a tour scheduled for September in Spain.
EO: Yes, fingers crossed.
PA: What’s your opinion about broadcast and on-line events? Because during the pandemic many bands have done something like this.
EO: I prefer the real shows, we love to be on stage and have an audience you can connect to and sing together with. When the pandemic hit us and the on-line events started, we had the discussion about how to do it, but I don´t know… In these times you have to do something, so we will see what happens, right now we have this tour and some festivals here in Sweden, we hope to come to Spain.

Which song do you enjoy playing the most on stage? No chance to play A Virtual World yet… From Biomechanical, Breakaway; and from Heroes of our time, The Hunter. I am a sucker for ballads, when they are good ballads (laughs).
Your favourite city to visit: I would like visit New York, I haven’t been there.
