Un día tienes todo el cuarto repleto de posters de tu banda favorita y al siguiente (30 años después), estás hablando con uno de ellos.
¡No todo lo que ha pasado en 2020 ha sido una mierda! He tenido el honor de tener una agradable charla con David Ellefson de MEGADETH, aunque esta vez para hablar de su disco en solitario y su trabajo. No sólo es un tremendo músico: ¡es un auténtico creador de contenidos! Pasen a descubrirlo…
Iñigo Ortúñez (I.O.): Hola, ¡buenas tardes! ¿Cómo te llamo, David, Junior o quizás Sr. Ellefson, ahora que tienes un Grammy?
David Ellefson (D.E.): Hola, ¿qué tal? Llámame David, por favor.
I.O.: Sé que hoy estamos aquí para hablar de ti y de tu nuevo disco “No cover”, pero tengo que decirlo: “MEGADETH es mi jodida banda favorita desde que tenía 14 años, ¡desde hace más de 30! ¡Es un gran honor!
D.E.: Muchas gracias, te lo agradezco mucho.
I.O.: Enhorabuena por el nuevo disco, es muy entretenido y disfrutable, un montón de clásicos tocados de una manera muy heavy, pero con mucha variedad (desde Thrash a Rock clásico). ¡Seguro que te lo has pasado genial grabándolo! ¿Qué me puedes contar sobre la grabación?
D.E.: La primera canción que elegí fue “Wasted”, por eso hice la portada del disco como el “On through the night”. Ese disco de DEF LEPPARD salió al mercado cuando tenía unos 15 años, y ellos tenían entre 16 y 18, así que fueron una gran motivación para mis compañeros de banda, de que podíamos conseguirlo, escribir nuestras canciones y salir a tocarlas en directo.
Así que empecé a pensar en canciones que de aquellos tiempos. Andy Martongelli recomendó “Rebel Yell”, yo elegí “Riff Raff” de AC/DC, “Auf Wiedersehen” de CHEAP TRICK, “Sheer heart attack” de QUEEN… Son unos temazos, no necesariamente los singles, pero sí unas joyas ocultas que me encantaban de esos discos, las canciones que me metieron en el Hard Rock y el Heavy Metal.
I.O.: ¿Qué fue primero, el huevo o la gallina? ¿Elegiste primero las canciones y luego a los músicos y los colaboradores, o fue al revés?
D.E.: La banda ELLEFSON eligió las canciones, es decir, Thom Hazaert, Andy Martongelli, el batería Paolo Caridi, Bumblefoot y yo, esa es la banda. La idea es que nosotros fuéramos el corazón de la banda y luego ir añadiendo amigos. Con algunos habíamos hecho algunos streaming durante el año, así que fue una manera de colaborar durante el confinamiento. Yo lo llamaría como una celebración guay de nuestra comunidad del metal, una manera de acabar el año fuertes y positivos, en un año lleno de problemas para todos.
I.O.: Me encanta ver a Bumblefoot tocando contigo, me flipa el trabajo que ha hecho en SONS OF APOLLO, que es una de las bandas que últimamente más me ha impactado.
D.E.: Es un guitarrista espectacular y en ELLEFSON también es cantante, canta unas melodías vocales fantásticas. Cuando propuse “Sheer heart attack” estaba algo perdido sobre quién podría cantarlo, pero Thom dijo “¡Ron la cantará, puede cantar cualquier cosa!”. Ron tiene una voz genial y harmoniza muy bien con Thom. Es un tío super talentoso, impresionante para la banda.
I.O.: Estos últimos años son como la era de las colaboraciones entre súper estrellas. El 2020, quizás por el confinamiento ya ha sido espectacular. Casi cada día veíamos colaboraciones increíbles. ¿Qué piensas de estos “Super grupos”?
D.E.: Sí, estoy de acuerdo. Yo he tenido un par de ellos, como METAL ALLEGIANCE recientemente conmigo, Mike Portnoy, Alex Scholnik y Mark Menghi, como el núcleo principal. No tenemos cantante, así que vamos eligiendo a uno para cada canción, así como otras colaboraciones. Tuve también una banda de versiones llamada HAIL! Con Ripper Owens, Andreas Kisser y luego baterías como Jimmy DeGrasso, Roy Mayorga, Mike Portnoy… así que llevo hacienda este tipo de colaboraciones los últimos 10 años.
En el MegaCruise del año pasado monté una KISS jam para tocar temas de KISS. Frank Bello y Charlie Benante de ANTHRAX me ayudaron mucho. Ya sabes más o menos a quiénes puedes pedirles este tipo de cosas. Este es un año donde casi todos queríamos tocar, necesitábamos tocar, porque eso es lo que somos. Pero para mi este disco no ha sido una simple colaboración, era algo muy real, porque gracias a que tengo mi propia Discográfica, he podido sacarlo al mercado, es ya una grabación original que estará ahí de por vida.
I.O.: Tengo curiosidad para saber cómo has podido ensamblar colaboraciones de tantos grande artistas de distintos sitios del mundo. Entiendo que la tecnología hoy en día ayuda mucho…
D.E.: Si, ayuda mucho. Hoy en día muchos tenemos algún tipo de estudio de grabación casero, Charlie Benante, Dave Lombardo… Al Jourgensen tiene un estudio en su casa dónde mezcla todos los discos de MINISTRY. Fuimos a su estudio para grabar el vídeo de “Auf Wiedersehen”. Pensar en montar algo así hace 10 años hubiera sido mucho más complejo.
I.O.: Me encanta ver a viejos amigos como Chuck Behler o Jimmy DeGrasso, que fueron compañeros tuyos en MEGADETH. En el pasado has colaborado también con Chris Poland… ¿Habrá alguna vez una colaboración con Marty Friedman?
D.E.: Adoro a Marty, sabes, pero tiene una carrera muy diferente y busca otras cosas. Marty y yo tocamos juntos en un concierto de METAL ALLEGIANCE hace 2 ó 3 años. ¡Irónicamente tocamos un tema de METALLICA! Pero los 2 somos fans de METALLICA también. Cuando estás en una banda con alguien, tienes una relación, como un matrimonio, así que aunque acabe y cada uno vaya por su cuenta… si un día te encuentras puedes decirle “¿Hombre qué tal? ¡Hace mucho que no te veía!”. Yo soy el que mantiene el contacto con todos los ex, soy como el Embajador del clan MEGADETH. Hago un montón de contactos con muchos músicos. Soy el que trajo a Kiko (Loureiro) y a Dirk (Verbeuren) a MEGADETH. En mis ratos libres toco mucho con otros músicos, ¡mi lista de contactos del iPhone es bastante grande!
I.O.: La lista de colaboraciones en el disco es interminable… algunas como Dave Lombardo, Charlie Benante, Dave McClain… eran más esperables, pero me encanta ver también nombres como Frank Hannon, Troy Lucketta, Todd Kerns, Mark Slaughter…
D.E.: Es gracioso, porque casi todas las canciones son de Rock, no de Metal. Cuando estábamos mezclando el disco, le dije a Andy Martongelli, que tiene una manera muy definida y poderosa de tocar, “no quiero que suene como un disco de Heavy Metal al uso, quiero que sea un disco de Rock. Estas canciones son especiales, vienen de una época distinta y las estamos trayendo 30 o 40 años más adelante. Quiero escuchar bien todos los detalles, todas las colaboraciones vocales”. Gastamos muchísimo tiempo en la mezcla, porque los temas y los colaboradores lo merecían.
Esto no es un disco de MEGADETH, tengo la suerte de poder tocar más cosas aparte de Thrash Metal, porque eso ya lo puedo tocar con MEGADETH, que somos unos de los precursores de ese estilo. Así que con ELLEFSON puedo relajarme un poco, aunque mi naturaleza sea tocar cosas más heavys. Cuando Thom propuso “Beth” pensé “Dios mío… nunca imagine que esta entrara…”. Le daba hasta vergüenza proponérmela, pero suena genial. Me encanta cómo la canta Thom, le pone una gran emoción a la voz.
I.O.: Visualmente no me puedo imaginar a Thom cantando “Beth”, considerando la imagen tan potente que tiene, jaja… Eres una persona muy ocupada: MEGADETH, METAL ALLEGIANCE, ELLEFSON, ALTITUDES & ATTITUDE, F5…Es curioso porque parece que tengo como una “cita anual con tu trabajo”, reseñé hace 2 años el disco de METAL ALLEGIANCE, el año pasado tu disco “Sleeping Giants”, este año te entrevisto y seguro que el año que viene haré el de MEGADETH!
D.E.: ¡Oh, muchas gracias por dedicarme tu tiempo! Durante 20 años, entre 1983 y 2003 cuando paró, me dediqué por completo a MEGADETH, porque realmente necesitaba esa dedicación para construir la banda. Cuando nos separamos hice F5, TEMPLE OF BRUTALITY, toqué en un disco de SOULFLY… la gente me llamaba y me decía “¿quieres tocar en este proyecto?”. Podría haber respondido con un “sabes… ahora soy famoso, toco en MEGADETH…”, pero pensé, “eres David, un bajista al que le gusta tocar, escribir música, colaborar, así que olvídate de la fama y toca, pásatelo bien”.
En 2006 o 2007 empecé a tocar algunas versiones con mis colegas en NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants), ahí es cuando empezó HAIL!. Concí a Randy Bachman allí, me encanta hablar con él, el disco “Not fragile” es el que me metió en este mundo cuando tenía uno 10 años. Él estaba en una fiesta en NAMM y me dijo si quería tocar con él, así que monté rápidamente una banda y tocamos “Taking care of business”, “American Woman”… y pensaba, “Joder, ¡no me puedo creer que esté tocando con Randy Bachman!” Es un tipo maravilloso, muy dulce. Para mí, tocar con mis héroes, es genial. Pienso que los últimos 20 años de mi vida han sido para enmarcar, muy divertidos y llenos de color. Es muy chulo tocar con otra gente.
I.O.: Todos te hacíamos grabando el nuevo disco de MEGADETH ahora… ¿Estás haciendo pellas?
D.E.: Estamos trabajando en el disco de MEGADETH y saldrá cuando sea el tiempo para salir de gira, así que tenemos que esperar a ver si las cosas se empiezan a relajar. Pero las cosas más pequeñas como ELLEFSON, abrirán antes que los grandes estadios. Así que tener este tema de ELLEFSON, y un par de cosas más dónde toco y que saldrán en 2021, son momentos chulos y que me ayudan a permanecer activo y creativo.
I.O.: ¿Cuáles son tus expectativas con este lanzamiento? ¿Estás pensando en girar para promocionarlo? Si lo haces, ¿con qué músicos lo harías?
D.E.: Teníamos ya fechas reservadas para mayo de 2020 en Australia y Japón, que hemos tenido que reubicar en octubre de 2021, con esta formación, incluso estaba previsto con Chris Poland. Tenemos un tour europeo para otoño de 2021. Realmente teníamos que estar de gira ahora, sabes. Tocamos 5 conciertos en el Medio-Oeste hace unas semanas y estuvo muy bien. Pero el Covid está ahí, es peligroso. Teníamos los conciertos ya cerrados y quisimos mantener nuestro compromiso, pero yo no quiero ser el irresponsable que lleve a las ovejas al matadero, haciendo que la gente se contagie.
I.O.: Películas de terror, libros… ¿la música no es suficiente para ti? Eres como un entretenedor. ¿Por qué decidiste crear tu Productora (Ellefson Music Production) y Ellefson Films?
D.E.: Thom y yo creamos “Ellefson Films” en 2019 y vamos a estrenar nuestra primera película de terror llamada “Dwellers” en febrero de 2021, escrita, dirigida y protagonizada por Drew Fortier y también estoy trabajando en mi segundo libro, otro libro de ficción llamado “Rock Star Hitman”. Empecé también con mi Editora de libros, “Ellefson Book Company” a la vez, así que sí, ¡soy una especie de creador de contenidos!
I.O.: Jajaja… es justo la palabra que venía a mi cabeza, un “entretenedor” o “creador de contenidos”. Está genial, porque a todos nos gustan los libros y las películas, no sólo la música.
D.E.: ¡Por supuesto! Sabes, la música se está convirtiendo en una parte más pequeña de un ente mayor. Mientras estaba escribiendo el libro, incluso hemos grabado un disco que estará alineado con la historia del libro. Tenemos que hacer cosas distintas y salirnos de lo estándar, porque luego te llega una pandemia como esta y te destroza todo.
I.O.: Thom Hazaert fue una de las mentes pensantes detrás de tu anterior disco “Sleeping Giants” y también canta en “No Cover”. Parece que es un socio muy cercano a ti ahora, ¿no?
D.E.: Thom es un buen amigo. Era un gran fan de MEGADETH en los primeros tiempos y siempre ha seguido mi trabajo. Yo tengo mi colaboración con Dave Mustaine desde hace muchos años, él es el cantante, el principal compositor y el creador de contenidos de MEGADETH. Thom vio algo en mi que probablemente no se había visto mucho ni se había reconocido tanto en MEGADETH, dado mi papel en la banda. Él ha sido uno de mis grandes promotores.
Ninguno de nosotros somos unidimensionales y Thom ha sido una gran ayuda para poder crear la compañía de discos, la compañía de libros y la de películas. Una de las cosas más tristes en una persona, es no dejar salir su creatividad. Cuando estás en un grupo cada miembro tiene un papel. Es vital mantener el grupo intacto y a la vez dar libertad a cada miembro para desarrollar su pasión sin crear conflictos en el grupo. Thom y yo creo que hemos hecho un gran trabajo en eso, creando todo esto al mismo tiempo que mi trabajo en MEGADETH.
I.O.: Después de tantos años, tantas colaboraciones… ¿hay todavía algún batería con el que te gustaría tocar? ¿Quién es el músico con el que has tocado que más te haya alucinado?
D.E.: Paolo Caridi, que no es muy conocido y toca ahora en ELLEFSON, es uno de mis baterías favoritos. Suena increíble y me siento tan cómodo con él, que ni siquiera me tengo que preocupar de él. He tocado con baterías geniales como Mike Portnoy, Charlie Benante, Dirk Verbeuren.
Cuando toqué con Joe Walsh fue como un campamento de fantasía de rock n’ roll. He tocado con ALICE COOPER, con Rob Halford, son los tíos con los que crecí. Solo quiero decir que tengo la suerte de haber tocado con mis músicos favoritos.
I.O.: OK, estamos llegando al final. Un último minuto para nuestro famoso cuestionario de Rock Angels para David Ellefson:
- ¿METALLICA o SLAYER? ¿Tengo que hacer esto? Preferiría no hacerlo, son todos mis amigos, sabes… METSLAYER… SLAYTALLICA… ¿qué te parece?
- ¿Girar o grabar en el estudio? Probablemente girar.
- ¿Gar Samuelson o Nick Menza? No puedo hacer estas elecciones, eran mis amigos y esto puede crear división entre mi gente.
- ¿Grandes Festivales o Clubs pequeños y sudorosos? Creo que soy la persona equivocada para este tipo de cuestionarios… Festivales quizás.
I.O.: Jajaja… tenía muchas preguntas similares, pero por supuesto si no te sientes cómodo, lo dejamos. Una última: ¿“Rust in Peace”, “Peace sells…” o “Countdown…”?
D.E.: ¡Debiera ser yo quién te haga esa pregunta a ti! Jajaja…
I.O.: Yo ya te respondo (enseñándole mi sudadera del “Peace Sells…”).
D.E.: Adoro todos los discos de MEGADETH, todos tienes un huequito en mi corazón. Esto es como elegir a un hijo sobre los demás, no puedo hacerlo.
I.O.: OK, ya paro, jajaja… David, muchísimas gracias por tu tiempo, ha sido un auténtico honor para mí. Cuídate mucho.

One day you have all room covered with posters of your favorite band and next day (30 years later), you are chatting with one of them. Not everything in 2020 has been bad! I had the honor to have a nice call with David Ellefson, from MEGADETH, but this time to speak about his solo album and all his work. More than a great musician and human being: a true content creator! Come in to discover…
Iñigo Ortúñez (I.O.): Hello, good afternoon! Should I call you David, Junior or maybe Mr. Ellefson after your Grammy award?
David Ellefson (D.E.): Hello, how are you? Please call me David.
I.O.: I know we are here today to speak about you and your new album “No Cover”, but I must say this: MEGADETH is my fucking favorite band since I was 14, so more than 30 years ago!! It’s a huge honor man!!
D.E.: Thank you, I appreciate it!
I.O.: Congratulations for the new album! It’s really amusing and easy to enjoy… so many classics performed in a very heavy way, but also with enough variety (from Thrash to Classic rock). I guess you had a nice time recording it! What can you tell me about the recording?
D.E.: Yeah! Well the first song we chose was “Wasted”, that’s why we did the cover as the album “On through the night”. When I was like 15 years old, that DEF LEPPARD album came out and the guys were really young, they were in their 16s and 18s, so they were an encouragement for me and my band mates, that we could do this, write our own songs and play live.
So then I started to think in songs that I liked from the time. Andy Martongelli recommended “Rebel Yell”, I chose “Riff Raff” from AC/DC, “Auf Wiedersehen” from CHEAP TRICK, “Sheer heart attack” from QUEEN… They are all great songs, not necessarily the singles, but some deep cuts that I liked from these albums. These were the songs that put me into Hard Rock and Heavy Metal.
I.O.: So what was first, chicken or egg? Did you chose first the songs and then the musicians and collaborations, or it was the other way round?
D.E.: The ELLEFSON band chose the songs, so it’s me, Thom Hazaert, Andy Martongelli, our drummer Paolo Caridi and Bumblefoot, that’s the band. Earlier this year we put up a couple of new songs. The idea was to have this band as the core and then bring some friends in, friends with whom we have done some livestreams this year, so it was a way for all of use to collaborate during this lockdown. I would call this like a cool celebration of the metal community and a way to finish strong and positive this year, that has had so many obstacles for everybody.
I.O.: I’m happy to see Bumblefoot playing with you, as I really love his work in SONS OF APOLLO, which is one of the last bands that have blown me away.
D.E.: He is a great guitar player and in the ELLEFSON band he is also a singer, he is singing so many fantastic harmony vocals! When I brought in “Sheer heart attack”, I was at a lost about who will be singing and Thom said, “Ron will do! He can sign anything”. Ron has such a great voice and he harmonizes great with Thom. He is really a very multitalented guy! Great adding to the band.
I.O.: These last years are for me the era for “Superstar collaborations”? And 2020, maybe due to the lockdown, has been amazing. Everyday we can see so many nice collaborations… What do you think of these “Super Groups”?
D.E.: I agree! I have had a couple, like METAL ALLEGIANCE more recently, with me, Mike Portnoy, Alex Scholnik, Mark Menghi as the core four, and we did not have a singer, so we had to bring a singer for every track, as well as other guest musicians. I had one cover band called HAIL! with Ripper Owens, Andreas Kisser and then other drummers like Jimmy DeGrasso, Roy Mayorga, Mike Portnoy… so I’ve been doing this kind of stuff for the last 10 years.
On the MegaCruise a year ago, I put together a big KISS jam to play KISS songs. Frank Bello and Charlie Benante from ANTHRAX helped me a lot on this. You kind of have a feeling about who in our community is approachable for this kind of things. This is a year in which most of us, we wanted to play, we needed to play, as this is who we are. But for me this was not only a collaboration, it was a real deal, as thanks to owning a Record Company we could put this out, so now this is a master recording that will be forever.
I.O.: I’m curious to know how you have been able to assemble the collaboration of so many great artists from all around the world. I guess technology nowadays is helping a lot…
D.E.: It does help a lot. Nowadays most of us have some kind of home recording set-up, Charlie Benante, Dave Lombardo… Al Jourgensen has a Studio in his house to mix all of MINISTRY records. We went to his studio to shot the video for “Auf Wiedersehen”. Trying to do a collaboration like this, even 10 years ago, would have been much more difficult.
I.O.: I have to say that I’m very happy to see there old friends like Chuck Behler or Jimmy DeGrasso, who were your band mates in MEGADETH. In the past you also collaborated with Chris Poland… Will there ever be a collaboration with Marty Friedman?
D.E.: I love Marty, you know, but he has a very different career, pursuing very different things. Marty and I jammed on a METAL ALLEGIANCE show 2-3 years ago. Ironically we played a METALLICA song! Haha… but we are also METALLICA fans. When you are in a band with someone, you have some kind of relationship, like a marriage, so when it ends you can go on separate ways, you don’t talk… but maybe the time comes around and you say “come on over, I haven’t seen you in a long time”. I’m the one who stays in touch with everybody, I’m some kind of Ambassador of the MEGADETH camp. And I’m doing a lot of networking with a lot musicians. I’m the one who brought Kiko (Loureiro) or Dirk (Verbeuren) to MEGADETH. In my downtimes, I jam and I play with a lot of musicians, my iPhone contact list is pretty big!
I.O.: The list of collaborations is endless… some like Dave Lombardo, Charlie Benante, Dave McClain… are more to be expected, but I love to see also the name of Frank Hannon, Troy Lucketta, Todd Kerns, Mark Slaughter…
D.E.: Yeah! It’s funny because a lot of the songs are Rock songs, not Metal songs. When we were mixing the album, I even said to Andy Martongelli, who has a very defined and powerful sound, “I don’t want this to be a generic Heavy Metal album, I want this to be a Rock album”, these songs are special, they come from a very different era and we are bringing them 30-40 years later. I wanted to hear the details, have a lot of great vocal collaborations. We spent a lot of time mixing the record, because the songs deserved it, the guests deserved it and it was a nice orchestration for the ELLEFSON band!
This is not a MEGADETH record, I do have the luxury to do something else apart from playing Thrash Metal, as if I want to do that, I can do it in MEGADETH, we are one of the main ambassadors of that style. So when I go with ELLEFSON, I can stretch out of this, even if my nature is playing heavier things. When Thom brought “Beth” I said “Jesus! I never thought that would be in…”, he was a little timid to show it to me, but it sounds amazing. I love when Thom sings, as he has a great emotion in his voice.
I.O.: Visually, I cannot imagine Thom singing “Beth”, considering his strong image, haha… You are really a very busy man, MEGADETH, METAL ALLEGIANCE, ELLEFSON, ALTITUDES & ATTITUDE, F5… It’s funny because I have some kind of “annual appointment with David Ellefson work”… I did the review of METAL ALLEGIANCE in 2018, “Sleeping Giants” in 2019 and now this! And for sure, I will do the new MEGADETH album next year!
D.E.: Oh! Thank you for spending time on this. For 20 years, since 1983 to 2003 when it stopped, I was fully into MEGADETH, as it needed this kind of dedication to build the band. So when the group disbanded, I did F5, TEMPLE OF BRUTALITY, I played in a SOULFLY record… people started to call me and say “you want to come in and play something?” I could have said, “you know… I’m pretty famous, I work in MEGADETH…”, but I thought, “you’re David, you’re a bass player, you’re a musician who likes to write, to record, to collaborate, so get out of this fame and celebrity and just play, have fun”.
In 2006 or 2007 I started jamming some cover songs with my buddies at NAMM. That’s when HAIL! started. It’s funny because I met Randy Bachman there and I love talking to Randy, the “Not Fragile” record is the one that got me into all this when I was 10 years old. He was playing at a NAMM party and he asked me to play, so I put a little band together and we played “Taking care of business”, “American Woman”… and I was thinking “Holy shit! I cannot believe I’m playing with Randy Bachman!” He is a wonderful guy, a very sweet man. For me, to get to play with my heroes, is awesome too. I think that last 20 years of my life have been remarkably fun and colorful. It’s fun to play with other people!
I.O.: Everybody was thinking that you were recording the new MEGADETH album, and you come up with a new solo effort!! Are you playing truant, skipping your classes?
D.E.: We’re working on the MEGADETH record and the release for it will be for the time of touring, so we have to wait and see if things really start to open up. Nobody knows. But smaller things like ELLEFSON will open faster than the big arenas. So having this ELLEFSON stuff and another couple of things where I play on that will come out in 2021 as well, are fun moments and allow me to stay active and be creative.
I.O.: What are your expectations for this release? Are you thinking in touring to promote this album… If you ever do it, which line-up will you think of?
D.E.: We had dates for May 2020 for Australia and Japan, that have been rescheduled to October 2021, with this line-up with Bumblefoot and even Chris Poland. We have a European tour for Fall 2021. We should have been on Tour now, you know. We played 5 shows in mid-West some weeks ago, and it was fine. But there is Covid, it’s dangerous, we had the shows booked and we kept our commitment, but I don’t want to be the irresponsible one leading the lambs to the slaughter and getting people sick.
I.O.: Horror films, books… music is now not enough for you? You are a real Entertainer! Why did you decided to create Ellefson Music Production and Ellefson Films?
D.E.: Yeah, Thom and I created “Ellefson Films” in 2019 and we are going to premiere our first horror film called “Dwellers” in February 2021, written, directed and starred by Drew Fortier and I’m already working on book 2, another fiction book that I’m working on, called “Rock Star Hitman”. I started the “Ellefson Book Company” together with “Ellefson Films” and “Ellefson Music Production”, so I’m more like a content creator!
I.O.: Haha! This was the word that was coming to my head, “entertainer” or “content creator”! It’s great, as we all love also books and films, not only music…
D.E.: Absolutely! You know, music now is becoming a smaller part of bigger things. You know, while writing the book, we have even recorded a record that will be aligned with the story line of the book. We have to do things outside of the box, because something like this pandemic shot everything down.
I.O.: Congratulations! Thom Hazaert was one of the masterminds behind your previous album, “Sleeping Giants” and he is also singing on this “No Cover”? He seems to be a very close partner to you now!
D.E.: Thom is a good friend to me. He was a big MEGADETH fan back in the day and followed my work there. I have had my partnership with Dave Mustaine over the years. Dave is the singer, the primary writer and the content creator and driver of MEGADETH. Thom saw something in me that probably didn’t have so much exposure and recognition in MEGADETH, by the nature of my role in the band. He has been one of my biggest champions, to lift me up.
None of us are one-dimensional and Thom has been a great support to me for putting up the label company, the book company and the film company. One of the worst things for anybody is not to allow creation to happen. When you are in a group, each member has a role. Keeping the group intact, while at the same time giving allowance to each member to fulfil their passion without causing a disruption to the group, is vital. Thom and I have done a great job on this, allowing all this to happen concurrently with MEGADETH.
I.O.: After so many years on the road, so many collaborations… is there any drum player with whom you would like to jam? And also who is the player who has amazed you more?
D.E.: Paolo Caridi, who is a relatively unknown and plays now in ELLEFSON group, is one of my favorite drummers now. He has an amazing sound and I play so comfortable with him, that I don’t even think about him. I have played with all the great drummers like Mike Portnoy, Charlie Benante, Dirk Verbeuren. I did a fantasy rock n’ roll camp when I played bass for Joe Walsh, it was great! I used to play some of his songs on my cover bands! I played bass with ALICE COOPER, or Rob Halford, these are the guys that I grew up with when I was a kid. I just want to say that I have played with all my favorite players.
I.O.: OK, we’re getting to the end. One last minute for our famous Rock Angels Quiz for David Ellefson:
- METALLICA or SLAYER? Do I have to do that? I’d rather not do… they are all my friends, you know. METSLAYER… SLAYTALLICA… how about that?
- Touring or Recording at studio? Probably touring.
- Gar Samuelson or Nick Menza? I can’t do these choices, they are my friends and this can cause division in my camp.
- Big Festival or Hot sweaty Club? I’m the wrong guy to do this… but I would say Festival.
I.O.: Haha… I have many similar questions, but if you prefer not to do this, let’s go to the final one: “Rust in Peace”, “Peace sells…” or “Countdown…”?
D.E.: I should be asking you this question, cause this is more a question for you.
I.O.: I have already answered (showing him my “Peace Sells…” hoodie).
D.E.: I love all the MEGADETH records, they all have a place in my heart. This is like choosing one of my kids over the other, I can’t do this.
