CITY OF THIEVES – Entrevista / Interview (ESPECIAL ZURBARÁN ROCK)

INTERVIEW ENGLISH VERSION

Emerging from the UK scene in 2015, CITY OF THIEVES are one of the new most exciting Rock bands that you can listen to in the current days. High energy attitude, a solid guitar based sound and catchy choruses give sense and meaning to killer song writing.

Rock Angels has the chance to throw a few questions to the band before their live show in Burgos, in ZURBARÁN ROCK, the first of July.

Jesús Alijo Lux: I´m glad to be talking with you. First time i heard about the band and after listening to the songs, i can assure that all that´s been said about CITY OF THIEVES is real. Nice comments from Toby Jepson and Mike Fraser, two icons for Rock fans. How is working with such both talented people?

Jamie COT: Hi Jesus, great to be talking with you as well! Glad to hear you love the songs, and that reviews are good! It was great to work with both Toby and Mike. Toby really made us focus on the songs, and we got some amazing results in terms of his approach to recording. We felt really confident to go in and just be ourselves and perform without any pressure. We both agreed that the secret to making a great rock record was to be as ‘poppy’ as possible, and to make the songs as catchy and cool as we could. Pop certainly isn’t a dirty word as far as we’re concerned, and to have Toby also agree with that sentiment was extremely refreshing and encouraging.

As for Mike, what can you say? He’s produced and mixed some of the greatest Rock albums of all time and albums that we’ve been listening to since we were kids! So to have his number on my phone, and to be waking up every morning to receive new mixes of our songs was an incredible feeling – like a kid at Christmas!! Whatever happens now, to have had that experience is something that we strived for since we began the band, and now we have it, in black and white printed on the CD ‘mixed by Mike Fraser’!

JAL: Could you please tell our readers the band´s history from the early days to present?

COT: Of course! Ben and I decided in 2007 that we should form a rock band once we left college, and in May of 2008 we met Will, and we’ve been together ever since. We’ve been through different line ups but us 3 have always stuck together, and our belief in each other kept us going for the last decade. We started off as Four Wheel Drive (you can still find our music on iTunes and Spotify etc. if you want to get to know us before the album comes out!), and for about 7 years we toured and gigged everywhere. We played all around Europe and the UK, and released a full length album, and two EPs which you can still find out there – as well as about 5 videos! When we began working with Toby, we decided that we wanted to expand our sound, and felt that a new name was in order so that we could showcase the new songs without feeling we were tied to our old ‘style’ moving forward. It’s still us though, and ‘Buzzed Up City’; ‘Animal’; ‘Fuel and Alcohol’ and ‘Lay me to Waste’ could have been Four Wheel Drive songs very easily… but stuff like ‘Something of Nothing’; ‘Born to be Great’; and ‘Reality Bites’ are a brand new step for us as songwriters, so we’re so glad to be able to release them!

JAL: Which influences could you mention as major acts for CITY OF THIEVE´s sounding?

COT: Wow… big question! Obviously our heroes started out as guys like AC/DC, the Rolling Stones etc., but we’ve tried to move away from that sound a great deal and explore other songwriters and sounds. So for the album, you could throw in bands like Foo Fighters, BlackStone Cherry, Buckcherry, Green Day, Nickelback (don’t hate!) etc. But it’s all about putting across the best songs we can. Some of the heavy-ness you could relate to bands like Triggerfinger and people like that, but we try to keep a melodic line running through the songs, and it’s all about song craft for us. In that sense, bands like Aerosmith and Guns ‘N’ Roses are hard to beat, so you can hear a lot of those guys running through even the heaviest of the songs.

JAL: Maybe you are not well known in Spain by now, what are Spanish rockers going to find in one of your live shows?

COT: Balls to the wall, blood, sweat and spit! Haha! We stop at nothing to deliver a high octane, killer show… expect an emotional rollercoaster!

JAL: Your first full Cd will be out in October, baptised as Beast Reality, how would you sell it in your own words?

COT: Bone-crunching, Pile-driving, fist pumping, no holds barred Rock! With pure sugar coated choruses! With lyrics ranging from beer and tits to existential questions, no less!

JAL: Frontiers Music is nowadays one of the biggest labels for fans of Melodic yet hard edged Rock, are you happy with your relationship? Is it hard to find a record deal that suits with a rock bands´ needs?

COT: It’s great to be on a label like Frontiers, who have faith in our genre, and faith specifically in new bands making new music! To be label-mates with some of our icons is a great position to be in, and Frontiers are so supportive in terms of getting the album out there, getting the press, and committing to us as a band because they believe in us. After 7/8 years, we assumed this would never happen, but here we are in 2018 being backed by a major player in the rock world! Long may it continue!

JAL: Rock scene is alive and kicking, lots of high quality new bands are born right before our eyes every week. As i said, CITY OF THIEVES are one of them, but, i´m sure you can discover us more. Would you like to be, for us, the Godfather of any new band?

COT: Not 100% sure on this question exactly what you mean, but we’d love to think that one day people will be listening to the music we’re making and wanting to be like us, or to use our songs to help develop music even further, that would be such big kick for us!

JAL: Any musical guilty pleasure you´d like to share with us? Don´t laugh but, as i always confess, one of mine is Roxette.

COT: Nice! Yeah, of course, but to be honest I don’t like the idea that someone has to have a ‘guilty pleasure’ – music should just be music, and people shouldn’t feel that they have to be shy about admitting they like it! I’m going to see Eminem in a couple of weeks, and I’m more excited than for basically any rock show in the last 10 years or so! It’s up there with the first time I saw Guns ‘N’ Roses, Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones or Motley Crue! Eminem is a great source of inspiration to me in terms of lyrics, rhythm, delivery and intensity… but I also listen to a lot of top 40 radio – gotta stay on top of sonic trends, and song construction! One of my favourite songs at the moment is F.R.I.E.N.D.S by Anne Marie! As I said, music is music, I don’t judge anyone for what they like, but I’m more judgemental of people who feel ‘their music’ is more important or more valid than someone else’s, just because it’s a bit more niche… We’re all about global reach… we want the most people possible to like our songs. If people start to dislike something because too many other people like it, then you know what? You can live without the ‘support’ of people who don’t want to see you go further!

JAL: Feel free to spread your message among our readers and Spanish Rock Fans in general. My best regards for the band, i´m looking foward to listen to Beast Reality!

COT: Go to www.cityoftheives.london and check out everything you need to know! Keep your mind open, you never know where the next massive inspiration is coming from, and if you have a goal – stick to it, and it’ll pay off, even if it takes ten years!!! Take it easy and see you next week!
