The Viper Room celebra 21 años con Steel Panther

Se trataba de una actuación secreta, anunciada en las redes sociales y promocionada como la de la banda Jam Prancer, pero aquellos que están en la onda enseguida se apresuraron a compartir que la banda no era otra que los histórica y políticamente incorrectos reyes de la perversión sexual: Steel Panther. Conocidos por su bien probado desenfreno y habiendo acabado hace menos de seis meses sus actuaciones en The House of Blues Hollywood, las noticias del grupo eran que el autobús de la gira norteamericana les traería de vuelta a Hollywood en un futuro inmediato. El miércoles 13 de agosto estaba claro que la banda no iba a perder la oportunidad de volver y celebrar el acontecimiento con el local de toda la vida, que continúa dominando la escena del Sunset Strip: The Viper Room y su semana de actuaciones por su vigesimoprimer aniversario.
Como Jam Prancer, la banda volvió la mirada atrás a aquellos tan comentados años cuando eran más conocidos como Danger Kitty – como se vio en aquel famoso anuncio de Discover Card, interpretando ei tema Love Rockit- y enlazaron algunos de los temas más populares del género del hard rock nota por nota. Para comenzar la actuación con un elegante tributo a Jani Lane, (que falleció esta misma semana hace tres años) la banda ofreció una perfecta versión del tema Down Boys de Warrant. Faltó muy poco para llenar totalmente el club, con gente desde el fondo hasta el mismo escenario, con los fans respondiendo y cantando las canciones, levantando los puños, chillando y vitoreándoles. Era evidente que Steel Panther estaba de vuelta en la ciudad y la multitud quería demostrar cuánto les había echado de menos.
Ataviados a la típica moda Steel Panther, la banda alternó un repertorio de ocho temas con una dosis moderada de charla, anécdotas, bromas e interacción con la audiencia. El frontman Michael Starr proclamó: «Es genial estar de vuelta en el Viper Room después de más e diez años. Todavía huele a B.O y chocho húmedo, tal como yo lo recuerdo» Este es el tipo de bromas que ofrecieron al público. Conforme avanzaba el concierto, los asistentes disfrutaban a Steel Panther como una cover band, incluso versionando uno de sus propios temas. El repertorio fue el siguiente:

A lo largo de la noche, la banda insistió en en que no estaban tocando como Steel Panther debido a que el asesor financiero de su representante les quitaría parte de sus emolumentos si mencionaban el nombre de la banda. Como las bromas se sucedieron espontáneamente durante la actuación, los fans pudieron llevarse a casa un nuevo recuerdo: una camiseta auténtica de Jam Prancer con su logo de un unicornio doble bajo un brillante arcoiris.
Como la visita a las calles en las que cimentaron su fama fue breve, la banda volverá a California, como Steel Panther, en noviembre abriendo para Judas Priest que está de gira.
Tal como figura en la web de la banda, tras una única actuación en el Chive Fest en Denver el 16 de agosto, continuarán con la gira de Judas Priest, que comenzará el día 1 de octubre y se prolongará hasta 2015.

The Viper Room Celebrates 21 years with Steel Panther

It was a secret show; announced on the Social Network and promoted as the band name Jam Prancer, but those in the know were quick to share that the band was none other than the historically and politically incorrect kings of sexual perversion – Steel Panther. Known for their well rehearsed debauchery and having less than just six months ago given up their residency at the House Of Blues Hollywood, the news from the band was that the North American bus tour would keep them from returning to Hollywood for the foreseeable future. On Wednesday, August 13th, it was clear that the band would not miss the opportunity to return and celebrate with the long standing establishment that continues to dominate the Sunset Strip’s performance scene, the Viper Room and it’s 21st Anniversary Week of shows.
As Jam Prancer, the band regaled back to those heralded days when they were better known as Danger Kitty – as seen in that famous Discover Card commercial featuring the song Love Rockit – and they matched some of the hard rock genre’s more popular songs note for note. Opening the set with a fine tribute to Jani Lane, who passed away three years ago this same week, the band offered a flawless version of Warrant’s song Down Boys. With little room anywhere in the club, from the back wall to the front of the stage, fans responded with sing-alongs and raised fists, shouts and cheers. It was evident, Steel Panther was back in town and the crowd was showing just how much they’ve been missed!
In typical Steel Panther fashion, the band intercut the eight-song set with a moderate amount of talking and story telling, jokes and crowd interaction. Front man Michael Starr shared, “It’s great to be back at the Viper Room after more than ten years. It still smells like B.O and wet pussy, just the way we remember it!” This was just a taste of the laughs they offered the audience. As the set list progressed, attendees enjoyed Steel Panther as a cover band, even covering one of their own songs. The list was a follows.

Throughout the night, the band insisted that they were not performing as Steel Panther due to their management’s financial take of their earnings should they mention the name of the band. While the running joke popped up many times during the performance, fans were actually able to take home a new piece of memorabilia – and actual Jam Prancer t-shirt that featured their double unicorn logo under a sparkly rainbow.
While their visit to the streets that they developed their fame on was brief, the band will return to California as Steel Panther in November when they appear on stage opening for Judas Priest on tour.
As posted on the band’s website, with a single performance at the Chive Fest in Denver on August 16th, the band will proceed with the Judas Priest Tour starting on October 1st and continuing well in to 2015.
