Algunos guitarristas lo llaman la oportunidad de tu vida, pero ni se te ocurra pensar que la posiblidad de formar parte de la banda de Alice Cooper ocurrió por casualidad. Nita Strauss,  la guitarrista de renombre mundial que ha girado por todo el mundo y se ha ganado los honores y el reconocimiento de las revistas especializadas más importantes, literalmente practicó hasta sangrarle los dedos para convertirse en la nueva guitarrista de la banda de Cooper. Ahora se sincera con el periodista musical Joe Dolan.

Joe: En los últimos seis años sin parar de tocar, has conseguido metas que muchos guitarristas sólo sueñan con conseguir. Para los fans de la música rock en Los Angeles, el verte actuar como parte del resurgir de la vocalista y compositora Lorraine Lewis, con Femme Fatale, tocar con los legendarios Iron Maiden y girar por todo el mundo ciertamente prueba que te has ganado a pulso el puesto número 1 en la lista de las guitarristas femeninas del Mundo que Deberías conocer. Esta última noticia de tu incorporación a la banda de estrellas que forma la alineación de Alice Cooper en un gran salto en los archivos del estrellato del hard rock. ¿Puedes compartir con nostros como te llegó esta oportunidad?

Nita: En primer lugar, muchísimas gracias! Estoy super emocionada! Me recomendó el mánager legendario de Alice, Shep Gordon y el productor Bob Erzin cuando estaban buscando una guitarrista femenina para la banda de Alice. Me reuní con ellos en LA. y conectamos a la primera.

Joe:  Hiciste algo especial para preparar la audición?

Nita; Me suponía que ellos querrían verme tocar ese día, así que dos días antes me familizaricé con los temas del actual set list de la banda. No me hicieron tocar inmediatamente pero aun estoy contenta de mi previsión, Es mejor estar preparada!

Joe:  ¿Cuánto tiempo transcurrió desde el primer encuentro hasta recibir la llamada «Eres la que estamos buscando»?

Nita:  Tras quedar con ellos, me enviaron algunos temas para aprender y todo transcurrió de forma natural desde ese momento. Ahora hemos firmado algunos shows como estrellas y vamos a unirnos a Motley Crue para la parte americana de su gira de despedida.

Joe: Como músico autodidacta que aprendió a tocar la batería, luego el bajo y despues la guitarra, has roto el molde de las artistas femeninas con aspiraciones en el negocio, puedes comentarnos algunos influencias que te llevaron a convertirte en una lider de la guitarra?

Nita: Steve Vai siempre ha sido lo más para mi. Passion and Warfare fue un album increíble y muy importante para mis primeros años de formación tocando la guitarra. Tambien solía escuchar, y aun lo hago, muchos otros discos instrumentales, Marty Friedman, Jan Cyrka, Paul Gilbert, Greg Howe…la lista sigue y sigue.

 

 

 

Joe: ¿Qué tipo de experiencias y problemas tuviste que hacer frente los primeros años y como encontraste el coraje para seguir y alcanzar tus objetivos?

Nita: Hice mi primera gira a los 15 años y fue una enorme experiencia de aprendizaje. Unos cuantos meses durmiendo en el asiento de una furgo (si tienes suerte de conseguir un asiento entero para ti sola) duchandote en paradas de camioneros y comiendo la mayoría de tus comidas en gasolineras a 10 dólares al día te curten para convertirte en una máquina de hacer giras. si puedes resistir eso cualquier otra cosa es posible.Cada vez que pensaba que quería una cama normal o una comida caliente y saludable, me recordaba a mi misma que podía dejar la gira facilmente e ir a trabajar a un banco en casa y tener todas esas cosas. Una vez que me convencí de que no quería eso todo fue mucho más fácil. Mantener una actitud positiva y estar agradecida por poder hacer lo que te encanta hacer es la clave para superar toda la adversidad.

Joe:  Has tocado con una amplia variedad de estrellas punteras, desde hard rockeros a ser seleccionada a dedo para tocar con la familia Jackson. El tocar con Alice parece seguir una tendencia con la que eres familiar. Tras tocar durante años con Iron Maidens, es decir, perfeccionando los temas, nota a nota y dándo a los fans las canciones que conocen y adoran sonando del mismo modo que solían sonar pero con tu toque único de energía «huracanada», tienes alguna expectativa de como será tocar un set de temas muy trillados con tres guitarristas en escena? ¿Hay algun elemento en tu propio estilo que esperas poner en práctica en el show?

Nita:  Creo que tener tres guitarristas en una forma genial de añadir un nuevo dinamismo, no sólo desde la perspectiva del show en si sino musicalmente tambien. Ryan Roxie y Tommy Henriksen son los dos músicos fantásticos y un conocimiento enciclopédico de la música rock y estoy tan feliz de ser la tercera rueda en el triciclo, por así decir! Esos tíos se saben los temas de delante atrás y de atrás adelante y pasamos mucho tiempo repasando el set list para asegurarnos de que todos lo tocamos como debe ser y nadie hace sonidos o ruidos extra cuando no es necesario, etc. Vamos a tocar un set de material clásico y le daremos el respeto que merece, pero también vamos a poner, como es lógico, un poco de nuestro propio estilo cuando sea apropiado.

Joe: Tras girar por el planeta, ¿Hay algunos sitios especialmente memorables para ti y que esperas poder visitar con Alice?

Nita: Me encanta tocar en todas partes, de verdad que si. No creo que pueda escoger un favorito. Siempre lo he pasado genial en Sudamérica. Me encantó Indonesia también. Creo que tendré que volver a todos esos lugares unas cuantas veces más antes de escoger un favorito!

Joe: ¿Dónde has encontrado el público más involucrado?

Nita: Hmmm… Probablemente diría Sudamérica otra vez…Brasil, Colombia, Ecuador…el público está loco allí. También Texas!

Joe:  ¿Puedes comentarnos sobre el equipo que vas a usar en la gira, guitarras, y/o efectos que definen tu sonido?

Nita: Tengo dos preciosas Ibanez nuevas S series que usaré en esta gira. También llevaré mi RGT320Z, que es mi favorita y la que he usado en todo el mundo. Y una sorpresa más que hará su debut en la gira con Motley. Voy a usar cabezales Blackstar Series One EL34 y pantallas Series One. Atrás las cosas cambian constantemente, pero ahora mismo tengo un acondicionador Furman. Line 6 Relay G90 wireless, Korg tuner  y un Rocktron Prophesy II.

Joe:  Fuera del tema de Alice, pero para los fans, hay algún proyecto que podrías grabar en el futuro que los fans busquen para coleccionar?

Nita:  Siempre estoy escribiendo y trabajando sobre ideas, pero ahora mismo estoy totalmente centrada en este concierto, quizá en algún momento el año próximo tendré tiempo de sacar un álbum en solitario que he querido hacer durante un tiempo.

Nita Strauss Opens up About Becoming part of Alice Cooper’s band

Some guitarists call it the opportunity of a lifetime, but don’t think for a minute that the chance to be part of Alice Cooper’s band happened by chance. Nita Strauss, the world renowned guitarist who has toured the globe and earned honors and recognition from top guitar magazines literally practiced until her fingers hurt to become the new guitar player in Cooper’s band and she opened up to music journalist Joe Dolan about the news.

Joe: Over the past six years performing, you’ve made great strides that many guitarists can only dream of achieving. For Los Angeles rock music fans, seeing you perform as part of the resurgence of vocalist/songwriter Lorraine Lewis with Femme Fatale, widely performing with the legendary Iron Maidens and touring throughout the world certainly proves you’ve earned the #1 rank on Guitar World’s list of Female Guitar Players You Should Know. This latest news of joining Alice Cooper’s incredible band of musicians is a huge leap into the archives of hard rock stardom. Can you share how the opportunity came about?

Nita: First of all, thank you so much! I’m incredibly excited! I was recommended to Alice’s longtime manager Shep Gordon and producer Bob Ezrin when they were looking for a female guitarist for Alice’s band. I met them in LA and we hit it off right away.

Joe: Did you do anything special to prepare for the audition?

Nita: I had an idea they might want me to play that day, so I took the 2 days before and got familiar with the songs the band was doing in the current set list. They didn’t have me play on the spot, but I’m still glad I did it! Better to be prepared!

Joe: How long after that meeting did you get the call saying, “You’re who we’re looking for?”

Nita: After I met them they sent me some songs to learn and the whole thing moved swiftly through the course from there. Now we’ve just wrapped up some headline shows and we’re about to join up with Motley Crue for the North American leg of their farewell tour.

Joe: As a self taught musician who learned drums, then bass and then guitar, you’ve broken the mold for aspiring female artists in the industry; can you share some influences that drove you to become a leader in your instrument of guitar?

Nita: Steve Vai has always been the guy for me. Passion and Warfare was an incredibly important album to my formative years of playing guitar. I also listened back then (and still do) to a lot of other instrumental albums – Marty Friedman, Jan Cyrka, Paul Gilbert, Greg Howe… the list goes on and on!

Joe: What sort of experiences and hurdles did you face from the early days and how did you find the encouragement to break through and reach your goals?

Nita: I did my first tour at age 15 and that was a huge learning experience. A few months of sleeping on a van bench (if you’re lucky enough to get a whole bench to yourself!), showering at truck stops and eating most of your meals from gas stations on $10 per day will go a long way toward creating a pretty mean touring machine. If you can make it through that, anything seems possible! Any time I thought I wanted a normal bed or a hot or healthy meal, I used to remind myself that I could easily quit touring and go work at a bank at home or something and have all those things. Once I got that through my head, things got a lot easier. Keeping a positive attitude and being grateful to get to do what you love through all the adversity is absolutely key.

Joe: You’ve performed with a wide variety of top draw artists ranging from hard rockers to being hand selected to perform with the Jackson family. Performing with Alice seems to follow a trend you’re familiar with, having worked for years with The Iron Maidens, that is, perfecting the songs, note for note and giving fans the songs they’ve come to know and love the same way they’re used to with your own unique brand of “Hurricane” energy. you have any expectations to how performing a set of longstanding hit songs in a three guitar situation will unfold? Are there elements of your own style you hope to implement into the show?

Nita: I think having 3 guitars is a really great way to add new dynamics, not only from the perspective of the stage show but musically as well! Ryan Roxie and Tommy Henriksen are both fantastic players with an encyclopedic knowledge of rock music and I’m so happy to be the third wheel on the tricycle so to speak! Those guys know the material backwards and forwards and we took a lot of time going over the set list in great detail making sure everyone is playing the right stuff and no one is making any extra noise where it isn’t needed, etc. We’re playing a set of classic material and giving it the respect it deserves, but we’re also definitely putting a little of our own flair when it’s appropriate.

Joe: Having toured most of the planet, are there locations that have been extremely memorable that you look forward to visiting with Alice?

Nita: I like playing everywhere! I really do. I don’t think I could pick a favorite. I always have a great time in South America. I loved Indonesia too. I think I’ll have to go back to all those places a few more times before I choose a favorite!

Joe: Where have the most responsive crowds been that you’ve performed?

Nita: Hmmm… that would probably be South America again! Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador… those crowds are insane! Also Texas!

Joe: Can you share in depth the equipment you’ll be using on tour, guitars, and or/effects that define your sound?

Nita: I have 2 beautiful new Ibanez S series that I’ll be using on this tour. I’ll also have my RGT320Z, which is my baby and the one that I’ve used all over the world, and one more surprise one that will be making its debut on the Motley run. I’m using Blackstar Series One EL34 heads and Series One cabs. In the rack things are constantly changing around, but right now I have a Furman power conditioner, Line 6 Relay G90 wireless, Korg tuner and a Rocktron Prophesy II.

Joe: Off the Alice subject, but for your fans, are there any projects you might be recording in the future that fans can look forward to collecting?

Nita: I’m always writing and working on ideas, but right now I’m totally focused on this gig! Maybe sometime next year I’ll have time to put out the solo record that I’ve wanted to do for a while.
