Micke Larsson es el compositor, guitarrista y productor de Coldspell, una de nuestras bandas preferidas de hardrock melódico en la actualidad. Toño Martínez Mendizábal tuvo el placer de entrevistarlo.
Toño: Micke ¿qué buscabas cuando decidiste crear Coldspell allá por el año 2005?
Micke Larsson: Puedo decir que la idea nació años antes, pero de alguna manera en la vida se siente que es ahora o nunca.Tenía un montón de canciones/ideas y sentí que esa enorme mochila de canciones y riffs iba a explotar. Suelo decir que que 2005 es el principio, porque somos una banda desde ese momento.
T.: Después de los cambios en la formación sois una banda sólida y versátil, pero ¿cómo definirías las cualidades de cada miembro?
M.L.: Supongo que es así. Empiezas con una gente que quizás no tiene lo que hace falta, en lo que hace referencia a interés y esas cosas. Pero tengo que decir que Coldspell 2014 se siente estupendamente. Quiero decir que tener a Perra atronando con los tambores, a Chris machacándose con el bajo no puede estar equivocado.Realmente parece que hemos crecido juntos, especialmente en lo que hace referencia a los directos. Matti es nuestro «profesor» detrás de los teclados y la voz de Niclas brilla como el oro por encima de todo.
T.: Frozen Paradise es vuestro tercer álbum tras Infinite Stargaze y Out from the Cold. ¿Podrías describir en una frase el «alma» o mensaje de cada uno?
M.L.: Bien, puedo decir que hay un montón de corazón y alma en los tres álbumes, tanto en la música/letra como en la interpretación.El álbum Infinite Stargaze fue el primero en salir y supongo que será siempre muy preciado para mí y parece un poco más desnudo comparado con Out from the Cold, que podía parecer más comercial con su sonido más grandioso. El último creo que tiene el alma de todos los recientes, ya que es melódico pero heavy, con un gran sonido.
T.: Vuestro álbum es, en nuestra opinión, una obra maestra y uno de los mejores de 2013 sin duda. ¿Qué opinas tú? ¿Es Frozen Paradise lo que soñaste antes de comenzar a componerlo?
M.L.: Muchas gracias por tus inspiradoras palabras y sí, siento que ese álbum es la declaración que quería hacer cuando empecé. Siempre hay cosas que piensas que podrías haber hecho mejor o de otra manera. Tenía un plan y una visión y creo que ¡casi dimos en el clavo!.
T.: Vuestras letras no hablan de fiesta, sexo, alcohol…, o, al menos, no habitualmente.En mi opinión, tratan de mostrarnos el camino de «salir del frío» (Out fron the Cold) de la tristeza gracias a los mensajes de paz, amor, vida, amistad y un toque de esperanza. ¿Crees que es así? ¿Cuánta importancia otorgas a dar un mensaje a vuestros fans?
M.L.: Esa pregunta me encanta, porque para mí es de lo que se trata,de tener letras que digan algo y, como tú dijiste, no tiene que ver mucho acerca de sexo, drogas y rocknroll, ¡jajaja! Puedo decir que son letras sobre la vida, sus altibajos, sin demasiada política en ellas, excepto por el hecho de que muchos de los temas hablan de esperanza y al mismo tiempo describen una forma de frustración acerca de lo que hay ahí fuera en este mundo nuestro!
T.: Ya que hablamos de las letras, Niclas Swedentorp es un gran cantante con una voz muy bonita. Una voz diferente que puedes relacionar inmediatamente con la música de Coldspell. ¿Eran esas las cualidades que andabas buscando en tu cantante?
M.L.: Sí, seguro que es una voz que reconoces y si estás puesto en cantantes como él, te encantará Coldspell. Tiene un tono muy alto, pero, al mismo tiempo, posee mucho soul en su voz y a los dos nos encantan cantantes como Ray Gillen/ Coverdale/Dio…Desde luego tiene una voz bonita, pero también pude ser enérgica y poderosa.
T.: Algunos de los temas de Frozen Paradise (Paradise, Life Has Just Begun, Soldiers…) suenan como himnos con un toque de reminiscencias épicas. ¿Te gusta esa fuente de inspiración para tus canciones?
M.L.: Gracias. Sí, estoy mucho por ese tipo de canciones que son grandes y poderosas. Supongo que encuentras un par de ellas en cada álbum como “Keep on believing, Eye of the storm, Out from the cold , Infinite Stargaze” ¡ Me encanta tocar esos temas en directo! porque son muy poderosos y grandes!
T.: Eres un guitarrista virtuoso que ofrece riffs melódicos, ritmos poderosos, dominio de diferentes técnicas y la magia del buen gusto y la clase, que es algo difícil de aprender. ¿Cómo ha evolucionado tu carrera hasta llegar a esta situación?
M.L.: Me siento adulado, gracias. Supongo que es el resultado de muchos años tocando/ensayando y mi enorme interés por diferentes estilos y técnicas. Siempre he sido curioso y me he interesado un poco por diferentes estilos, tocado la guitarra clásica durante unos pocos años y me han fascinado los buenos intérpretes de country. Pero si hablamos de hardrock, lo que más me gusta es el picking de Blackmore y el tapping de Halen. Asi es que creo que ¡soy el resultado de todo eso, jajaja!
T.: ¿Cuáles fueron tus principales influencias como guitarrista y compositor en el pasado? ¿Y ahora cuáles son tus favoritos?
M.L.: Como dije, Blackmore, Halen, Iommi, George Lynch , Satriani , Vai , Schenker, Malmsteen; han sido una inspiración enorme. Si hablamos de guitarristas modernos, creo que hay un puñado que son increíbles, tanto en el género del metal como también en otros géneros.
T.: Cuando una banda crea un álbum tan bueno como Frozen Paradise puedes pensar que es difícil, no solo superarlo sino siquiera igualarlo. ¿Cómo encaras vuestro próximo trabajo? ¿Estáis trabajando ya en él?
M.L.: Creo que me hago esa pregunta después de cada álbum y sí, es fácil terminar pensando cómo co…será este álbum tan bueno como el último, pero no tengo ese tipo de pensamientos. Sé que hay quien piensa que nunca haremos un álbum como Infinite Stargaze y otros piensan lo mismo de Out from the Cold y ahora, con Frozen Paradise,algunos pensarán lo mismo también, jajaja.Lo que es importante para mí es que el nuevo álbum tenga el mismo corazón y alma y que, cuando lo escuches,te des cuenta de que es un paso hacia adelante natural de la banda. Todos y cada uno de los álbumes hasta la fecha completan a los otros y sí, sé que no compondré otro como Frozen Paradise, pero espero que sea bueno, quizás de otra forma.
T.: Muchas de nuestras bandas preferidas de diferentes estilos proceden de Suecia y, aunque normalmente pregunto acerca del tema, creo que necesito tu explicación.¿Cómo es posible? Tantas bandas, un nivel tan alto, tan buen gusto…
M.L.: Me planteó esa pregunta un montón de veces, si hay algo en el agua, o lo que sea es algo que, honestamente, no sé.Tal vez tiene que ver con nuestros largos inviernos y no tener otra cosa que hacer o, quizás tiene que ver con el vodka, ¡jajaja! Pienso que siempre hemos tenido una importante tradición en lo que se refiere a tocar instrumentos, porque los tenemos en la escuela desde el momento en que empezamos.
T.: Tenéis muchos fans en USA y os sentís muy cómodos allí. ¿Por qué crees que vuestra música conecta tan bien con el público norteamericano?
M.L.: ¡Yeah!Tienes razón en eso y es asombroso. Hemos estado allí tres veces y volveremos en 2015, pero a menudo me dicen que la música suena bien y que en los EEUU no consiguen bandas como esta que tocan esta mezcla de hardrock de la vieja escuela con sonido moderno.En cualquier caso, me encanta que les guste lo que hacemos :).
T.: ¿Cómo te sientes cuando notas que tu música conecta tan bien con gente de diferentes países, culturas,lejos de Suecia y que, incluso, les ayuda a pasar un buen rato, lo que es una forma de tener una vida mejor?
M.L.: Tal como está el negocio musical ahora, es difícil vivir de ello, así es que suelo decir que las increíbles opiniones, comentarios, palabras agradables…valen más que el dinero. He recibido un buen puñado de cartas, a lo largo de los años, de gente que me decía que tal canción/letra significó mucho para ellos en una determinada situación. ¡Es realmente impresionante cuando te das cuenta del poder de la música!
T.: Y, en cuanto a España, sabemos que es muy caro empezar una gira viniendo desde Suecia, pero ¿Vamos a disfrutar de un concierto de Coldspell en un futuro cercano?
M.L.: Debo decir que he recibido varias peticiones los últimos años y, para ser honesto,para mí sería un sueño hecho realidad ir, conocer a todos los fans de Coldspell y hacer algunos nuevos. Conozco bandas suecas que han girado allí y no tienen sino buenas palabras sobre la escena rock en España.
T.: Son tiempos difíciles para el rock and roll (y para mucha gente…) ¿Crees que el rock sobrevivirá y alcanzará el lugar que ocupó en los ochenta?
M.L.: Definitivamente sé que el rock y el hardrock están aquí para quedarse. Creo que se está haciendo más grande como género, pero si será como el los 80 no estoy seguro. No creo que tenga que ver con que ahora haya menos interés. Tiene que ver con el negocio en general. Son tiempos duros para conseguir recursos económicos para girar, ¡por ejemplo!.

Micke Larsson is the composer, guitarist and producer of Coldspell, one of our favourite melodic hardrock bands right now.
Micke, what were you looking for when you decided to create Coldspell back in 2005?
Micke Larsson: I can say that this idea was born years before that but somehow in life it felt like its now or never. Had so many songs / ideas and it felt like this huge backpack of songs and riffs was about to burst . I use to say 2005 is the beginning as we were a band from that moment.
* After the changes in your lineup you are a solid and versatile band, but how can you define every member’s qualities?
Micke Larsson: Guess that’s the way it is , you start and some people maybe don’t have what it takes when it comes to interest and all that but I have to say that ColdSpell 2014 feels like better than best. I mean , havin Perra bangin those drums and Chris rippin off with that bass it cant go wrong . Really feels like we grown together especially when it comes to play live! Matti is our “professor” behind the keys and Niclas voice shimmer like gold on top of it all.
* Frozen Paradise is your third album, after Infinite Stargaze and Out from the Cold. Can you describe in a sentence the “soul” or message of each one?
Micke Larsson: Well I can say that it’s a lot of heart and soul in all three albums both in music / lyrics and performance. The Infinite Stargaze album is the first born and I guess it will always be very precious for me and it feels a bit more naked compared to the Out from the cold that could seem to be a bit more commercial with its bigger sound. The latest album I think have the soul of all recent albums as its melodic but heavy with a big sound.
* Your third album is, in our opinion, a masterpiece and one of 2013 best records. No doubt. What is your opinion about it? Is Frozen Paradise what you dreamt before starting writing it?
Micke Larsson: Many thanks for inspiring words and yes it feels like that album is the statement I wanted it to be when started. But you know what its like , theres always things you think you could have done better or in another way . I had a plan and a vision and I think we almost nailed it!
* Your lyrics don not speak about party, sex, booze…, or at list not usually. In my opinion they try to show us the way to get “out from the cold” of sadness thanks to messages of peace, love, life, friendship and a touch of hope. Do you think so? How important is it for you to give a message to your fans?
Micke Larsson: This question makes me so glad , cause that’s what its about for me – to have songs and lyrics that mean something and like you said it aint that much about sex drugs and rocknroll , haha! Can say its words about life and its up and downs , not much politics in it except for the fact that many songs are about hope and at the same time describes some sort of frustration over what its like out there in this world of ours!
* Talking about the lyrics, Niclas Swedentorp is a great singer with a beautiful voice. A different one that you can immediately connect with Coldspell´s music. Were those the qualities the ones you were looking for your singer?
Micke Larsson: Yeah , he sure have a voice you recognize and if youre in to singers like him you will love ColdSpell. He has a very high pitch but at the same time a lot of soul in his voice and both him and me love that kind of vocals and singers like Ray Gillen/ Coverdale / Dio …..! He sure has a beautiful voice but can still be very dynamic and powerful.
* Some of Frozen Paradise’s songs (Paradise, Life Has Just Begun, Soldiers…) sound as anthems with a touch of epic reminiscences. Do you like that source of inspiration for your songs?
Micke Larsson: Thanks , yes Im very much in to these kind of songs that are big and powerful . Guess you find a couple of them on each album , like “Keep on believing, Eye of the storm, Out from the cold , Infinite Stargaze”! Love performin these songs live as they are very dynamic and big!
* You are a virtuoso guitarist that offers melodic riffs, powerful rhythms, different techniques dominion and the magic of good taste and class, which is something difficult to learn. How did your career start and evolve to this situation?
Micke Larsson: I´m flattered, thanks! I guess this is the result of many years of playin / practicing and my huge interest for different kind of styles and techniques. I always been very curious and been a little into most styles , played classical guitar for a few years and have a fascination for good country players. When it comes to hardrock I like just as much Blackmore´s pickin and Halen´s tappin. So I guess Im the result of all this, haha!
* Which were your main influences in the past as a guitar player and rock composer? And nowadays, which are your favourite ones?
Micke Larsson: Like I said , Blackmore, Halen , Iommi , George Lynch , Satriani , Vai , Schenker, Malmsteen have been huge inspirations . When it comes to modern players I think there´s a bunch of awesome ones both in the metal genre and other genre´s as well!
* When a band creates an album as good as Frozen Paradise you can think that it is difficult, not only to get over it, but also to get the same level. How do you face your next work? Are you already working on it?
Micke Larsson: I think I had that question after each and every album and yes , its easy to end up thinking how the …. will this album ever be as good as the last one but I have no thoughts like that. I know some people think we will never do an album like Infinite Stargaze again and some people think that about Out from the cold and now with Frozen Paradise some will think that as well , haha. What is important for me is that a new album have the same heart and soul and when listen to it you realize that it’s a natural step for the band forward. Each and every album so far do complete each other and yes I know I wont write an album like “Frozen Paradise” but it will hopefully be a good one maybe in another way.
* Many of our favourite rock bands, different styles, come from Sweden and, although I usually ask about it, I think I need your explanation. How is it possible? So many bands, high level, good taste…
Micke Larsson: Oh I had that question a number of times , if its something in the water or what it is but to be honest I don’t know . Maybe got to do with our long winters and have nothing else to do or maybe it has to do with the Vodka , haha! I think we always had a good tradition when it comes to play instruments as we have it in our school since the day we start.
* You have many fans in USA and you feel comfortable there. Why do you think your music connects so well with the American audience?
Micke Larsson: Yeah youre right about that and I think its amazing. We been there 3 times and will be back in 2015 but I often get the feedback that the music feels right and that US don’t come up with bands like this that play this kind of mix of old school hardrock with a more modern sound. Anyway , Im glad if they like what we do J
* How do you feel when you realize that your music connects so well with people of different countries, cultures, far from Sweden, and maybe it even helps them to have a good time, which is a way of having a better life?
Micke Larsson: As the music business is right now its hard to live on it so I use to say that all the amazing feedback , comments , nice words is worth so much more than money. I had a bunch of letters over the years when peole have wrote to me about how a certain song / lyrics ment so much for them in a certain situation . Its totally mindblowing when realize the power of the music!
* And about Spain, we know it is very expensive to start a tour coming from Sweden, but are we going to enjoy a Coldspell’s gig in the near future?
Micke Larsson: I have to say that I had a number of requests over the last years and to be honest , that would be a dream come true to get there and meet all ColdSpell fans and gain some new. I know some Swedish bands that been tourin there and have nothing but good to say about the Rock scene in Spain
* These are hard times for rock and roll (and for many people…) Do you think that rock will “survive” and get to the place it had in the eighties?
Micke Larsson: I definitely know that Rock and hardrock are here to stay , I think its getting bigger and bigger as a genre – but if it will be like in the -80´s im not sure. Don’t think it has to do with less interest these days , think it has to do with the business in general. Hard times to get economy in tourin for example!
