Los escandinavos H.E.A.T están viviendo un momento grande en su carrera, ya no solo por sus trabajos discográficos, si no también se consolidan en directo, tanto en solitario como teloneando o participando en festivales. A las puertas de su próxima actuación en el festival Leyendas del rock, cuarta visita a nuestro país y tercera en lo que va de año. Alraune no dudo en entrevistar a su guitarrista Eric Rivers antes de su descarga en Villena.
Alraune. Hola, Eric. No quiero empezar esta entrevista con la típica pregunta sobre la historia de la banda, ya que todos os conocen. Así que me gustaría saber lo que habéis estado haciendo tras editar “Tearing down the walls”.
Eric: Giras, giras, giras. Ha sido una gira fantástica en la mayoría de Europa incluyendo fechas con los Scorpions y algunos festivales. Nos encanta estar de gira. Más que cualquier cosa.
Alraune- La portada del album realmente me llamó la atención, se ve un poco apocalíptica. ¿Cómo la hicísteis? ¿Cuál es su significado?
Eric: Sentíamos que el album necesitaba una portada épica, y siempre hemos querido algo fresco, dibujado, con un toque de cómic. Crash encontró a este artista increíble de Rusia tecleando “arte apocalíptico”, o algo así. Así que le contactamos y le mandamos nuestras ideas y nuestra música y él nos vino con esta gran portada. Representa que estamos derribando los muros tras nosotros y dirigiéndonos hacia un futuro más brillante y positivo.
Alraune- He visto tanto opiniones como reseñas del album, y la gente parece estar dividida sobre él. O lo aman, o lo odian. ¿Os dicen eso vuestros fans?
Eric: Ja ja, nadie tiene las pelotas de decirme que es una mierda. O quizás no lo escucho, no lo sé. Pienso que ha sido nuestro album mejor recibido, tanto por fans como por críticos, hasta ahora. También pienso que estas canciones funcionan mejor en directo, y esa era nuestra intención cuando las escribimos y las grabamos.
Alraune- Este año la banda estuvo tocando en España con Scorpions, en el Rock Barcelona Fest y también estaréis presentes en el Leyendas del rock. Tres veces en un año no está mal, ¿no? Parece que estáis consiguiendo muchos fans por aquí…
Eric: ¡Oh, sí! España siempre nos ha sorprendido, incluso cuando éramos una banda con maquetas. La gente está siempre dentro de la música y no tiene miedo de demostrarlo. Otros países pueden ser un poco rígidos, pero España realmente se deja llevar. ¡Nos encanta!
Alraune- ¿Podrías contarme qué tal la experiencia de telonear a Scorpions, por favor?
Eric: Genial. No estuvimos mucho con ellos, pero ¡menuda gente! Siempre es un honor abrir para una banda legendaria como Scorpions que nos ha influenciado a nosotros y a toda la escena musical. Es también un poco de presión para nosotros demostrar a la gente porqué somos una banda sorprendente y mantenerles en una buena onda. ¡Pienso que hicimos un buen trabajo!
Alraune- El año pasado tocásteis en Firefest, y este año repetiréis como cabezas de cartel el Viernes. Los promotores deben de estar muy contentos con vuestro show entonces… os ví, y pienso que fue una grata sorpresa para mí, no os había visto en directo antes y me atrapó la energía que demostráis en directo…
Eric: Sí, Firefest siempre es un buen sitio para tocar. Y pienso que a la gente le gustamos por nuestra energía. Hay muchas bandas más viejas que tocan allí que tocan genial, pero quizás no están en forma para un lleno en el Rock City, je je. Sin ofender.
Alraune- Me gustaría saber sobre cómo tocas la guitarra en directo, ya que ahora eres el único guitarrista en la banda. Cuando grabas el disco, puedes tocar todo lo que quieras y conseguir muchos sonidos, pero es más difícil cuando tocas en directo, ¿no? Estás limitado a solo una guitarra. ¿Cómo lo manejas?
Eric: Trato de encontrar lo que es importante en la canción. Y sí, por supuesto que tonteamos un poco en el estudio añadiendo una guitarra rítmica sobre el solo y cosas así, pero oye, todas las bandas lo hacen. Y pienso que a veces puede añadir algo el quitar algo en directo si sabes lo que quiero decir. Era un desafío al principio ser el único guitarrista, pero ahora me encanta. Es más presión.
Alraune- Supongo que ya te lo habrán dicho antes, pero no puedo evitar pensar en el “Oops I did it again” de Britney Spears cuando escucho “Mannequin show”. No te molestes, pienso que es una canción chula, es divertida.
Eric: Sí, nos lo han dicho antes. Lo que tratamos de cumplir con esta canción era un aire a lo Abba en realidad. Y es un chico sueco el que escribió esa canción de Britney, así que supongo que es una canción sueca.
Alraune- ¿Por qué elegísteis “She,s like the wind” como canción extra para el EP?
Eric: Fue nuestro productor Tobias Lindell quien lo sugirió cuando teníamos grabado el disco entero y teníamos aún un día de grabación. Así que dijo, vosotros mismos. Nunca había oído la canción antes, pero la ensayamos unas cuantas veces y la grabamos porque no teníamos nada mejor que hacer. Es una grabación en vivo al 100% grabada por cinco suecos muy borrachos. No sabíamos si la editaríamos o no, pero luego descubrimos que grabamos la canción el día del cumpleaños de Patrick Swayze, y era una señal lo bastante grande como para que la editáramos.
Alraune- Personalmente, me siento incapaz de escoger una sola canción del album, ¿tienes alguna favorita?
Eric: Mis favoritas son “Point of No Return”, “Inferno” y “Emergency”. Me encanta tocar esas canciones en directo.
Alraune- ¿Te gustaría decir algo a los fans españoles? Siempre sois bienvenidos aquí…
Eric: ¡Gracias un millón de veces por vuestro apoyo interminable! Sois uno de los pocos públicos que tiene tanta o incluso más energía que nosotros. ¡Gracias!(Esta última palabra en castellano).

1-Hi, Eric. I don,t want to start this interview with the typical question about the story of the band, as everyone knows you already. So, I,d like to know what you all have been doing after the releasing of “Tearing down the walls”.
Touring, touring, touring. It’s been a fantastic tour in most parts of Europe including gigs with the Scorpions and some of the best festivals around. We love touring. Most if it anyway.
2-The cover of the album really caught my attention, it looks a little apocalyptic. How did it came out? What’s the meaning of the artwork?
We felt that this album needed an epic cover, and we’ve always wanted a cool, drawed cover, with a bit of comic book to it. Crash found this amazing artist from Russia by just googling “apocalyptic art” or something. So we contacted him and sent him our ideas and music and he came up with this great cover. It just represents that we’re tearing down the walls behind us and heading in to a more positive and bright future.
3- I’ve seen both oppinions and reviews of the album, and people seem to be divided about it. They love it, or they hate it. Do the fans tell you about it?
Haha, no one ever has the guts to tell me it sucks. Or maybe I just don’t listen, I don’t know. I think this has been the best received album, both from fans and critics, so far. I also think that these songs work best live, and that was our intention when writing and recording.
4- This year the band was playing in Spain supporting Scorpions, and also present at a couple summer festivals. Three times in a year ain,t bad, right? It seems you,re getting lots of fans around here…
Oh yes! Spain has always been amazing for us, even when we were a demo band. The crowds are always into the music and aren’t afraid to show it. Other countries can be a bit stiff, but Spain really lets loose. We love it!
5- Could you tell me about the experience of supporting Scorpions, please?
Just great. We didn’t hang out with the guys much, but what a crowd! It’s always an honour opening for a legendary band like Scorpions who have influenced us and the entire music scene. It’s also a bit of pressure on us to prove to the people there why we are an awesome band and to get the crowd in a good vibe. I think we did a good job!
6- Last year you played at Firefest, and this year you,ll repeat as headliners on Friday. The promoters must be very happy with your show then… I saw it, and I thought that it was a nice surprise for me, I hadn,t seen you live before and I was caught by the energy you all show live…
Yeah, Firefest is always a great place to play. And I think that people like us because of the energy. There are a lot of older bands who play there who play great, but maybe aren’t in shape to rock a sold out Rock City, hehe. No offence.
7- I,d like to know about your guitar playing when you play live, as you,re now the only guitarrist in the band. When you record the album, you can play as much as you want to and get lots of sounds, but it,s harder when you play live, right? You,re limited to just one guitar. How do you dial with it?
I just try to find what’s important in the song. And yeah, of course we cheat a bit in the studio by adding a rhythm guitar over the solo and such, but hey, every band does that. And I think sometimes it can add something by removing something live if you know what I mean. It was challenging at first being the only guitar player, but now I love it. More pressure.
8- I guess you have been told about it before, but I can,t help thinking about Britney Spears,s “Oops I did it again” whenever I listen to “Mannequin show”. Don,t get upset, I think it,s a nice song, and it,s a funny thing for me… 😉
Yeah, we’ve heard that before. What we tried to accomplish with that song was a nice Abba vibe actually. And it’s a Swedish guy who wrote that Britney song, so I guess it’s just a Swedish sound.
9- Why did you chose “She,s like the wind” as an extra song for the EP?
It was our producer Tobias Lindell who suggested that when we had recorded everything for the album and we had one more day of recording left. So he just said it out of the blue. I hadn’t even heard the song before, but we rehearsed it a few times and just recorded it cause we had nothing better to do. Its a 100% live recording by five pretty drunk Swedes. We didn’t know if we would release it or not, but we later found out that we recorded the song on Patrick Swayzes birthday, and that was a big enough sign for us to release it.
10- Personally, I feel unable to chose a song from the whole album… do you have any fave?
My personal favourites are Point of No Return, Inferno and Emergency. I absolutely love to play those songs live.
11- Would you like to say something to the Spanish fans? You,re always welcome here…
