Ayer tuve el placer de entrevistar a Björn Strid, cantante de The Night Flight Orchestra, banda que se ha convertido en poco tiempo en uno de mis top 10 gracias a su estilo diferente y sus grandes peculiaridades dentro del Hard rock melódico/AOR. Aquí os dejo nuestra conversación:

Laura Grosskopf (L.G.):¡ Hola Björn! ¿Qué tal estás?

Björn Strid (B.S.): ¡Hola!!! Bien, ¿Cómo estás tú?

L.G.: Muy bien, pero con mucho calor aquí ahora mismo…

B.S.: Sí, lo he visto en las noticias que en España e Italia tenéis una ola de calor. ¿A cuántos grados estáis allí? ¿45 ºC?

L.G. : Pues aquí en el norte no tanto, unos 40, pero como estoy de vacaciones está genial, no me voy a quejar, jajajjajaja. En Suecia me da que no tenéis ola de calor, ¿no? jajjaja

B.S.: No, jajajajjaja, aquí no hace tanto calor afortunadamente.

 

L.G.: Bueno, Björn, es un gran placer hablar contigo y he de confesarte que conozco tu banda, The Night Flight Orchestra, desde hace unos años, y ahora mismo soy una gran fan vuestra, creo que lo que hacéis es diferente. Por esa razón, tengo curiosidad por algunos aspectos del grupo, como por ejemplo, ¿De dónde sacasteis la idea del nombre de la banda?

B.S: Bueno, todo empezó cuando David Andersson, el guitarra, que además trabaja conmigo en Soilwork, nos conocimos en 2007. Estábamos muy metidos en el rock de los 70´y 80´, Rock, Pop y también la estética de esas décadas. Empezamos el tour en norte América y al final acabábamos sentados juntos escuchando música, mirando por la ventana, sobre todo por la noche y nos dimos cuenta que empezó a ser algo especial que nos gustaba hacer, escuchar música y tomarnos unas bebidas mientras viajábamos, especialmente cuando volábamos por la noche mientras el resto del mundo estaba dormido. Llegó a ser algo muy especial para nosotros, algo muy emotivo y de ahí surgió el nombre para la banda The Night Flight Orchestra.

 

L.G:¡ Qué buena idea! También tengo mucha curiosidad sobre el tipo de ropa, trajes, que lleváis en los conciertos, en los videos. Creo que es diferente… ¿Qué intentáis simbolizar con ello?

B.S.: ¡Muy buena pregunta! Casi no sé ni de donde vino. Puede parecer raro, pero simplemente quería “crear” ese estilo AOR de manera genérica con ese tipo de gorro/boina y creo que todo empezó con David Bickler, el cantante de Survivor, que llevaba un gorro de esos y le dije a David: ¡Yo también quiero llevar una boina!, empezó como una broma, pero al final decidí que quería crear mi personaje en torno a ello, con gafas de aviador, con trajes chulos de diferentes colores. Y luego cuando se unieron las chicas llegó a ser más un concepto, algo relacionado con las líneas aéreas, romantizando el vuelo y todo lo ligado a ello. Hoy en día incluso llevo una capa dorada, que es parte del espectáculo y es muy divertido, todo un show.

 

L.G.: Björn, The Night Flight Orchestra no es tú única banda, también cantas es Soilwork. ¿Cuál considerarías tu banda principal y cual tu secundaria?

B.S. : Es 50 /50 . Empecé en Soilwork cuando tenía 17-18 años, es como mi pequeño bebé, aunque en The Night Flight Orchestra ya llevamos 10 años y no es algo nuevo, pero creo que canalizo todas mis influencias a través de las dos bandas. A parte de cantar, también toco la guitarra en otro grupo con mi novia.

Creo que aúno todo con las dos bandas, con Soilwork y con TNFO (The Night Flight Orchestra), es muy difícil para mí elegir una. TNFO es como más suave y más divertido en algún aspecto, pero Soilwork también me ofrece mucho emocionalmente. Estoy muy conectado emocionalmente a las dos bandas, es difícil de explicar, son dos expresiones musicales diferentes. Me siento muy equilibrado musicalmente con éstas dos bandas y también en un plano personal.

 

L.G. : Eso mismo que estabas diciendo, las dos bandas tienen un estilo musical totalmente diferente, estamos hablando de Rock melódico con TNFO y de Melodic Death metal con Soilwork…. ¿Cúal de los dos estilos ha sido tu influencia principal?

B.S. : Siempre he estado en todos los estilos, al principio de los ‘90 coleccionaba discos de los ‘70 y al mismo tiempo estaba muy metido en el Black Metal, aunque sean casi contrarios. Escuchaba muchísima música de niño, mi madre siempre ponía música en el coche, me encantaba ir a cualquier sitio escuchando algo, ella ponía mucho Eurrythmics, las típicas canciones de los ‘80…, pero luego descubrí también el Heavy metal, The Number of the Beast cuando tenía 7 años, W.A.S.P, Judas Priest…, pero siempre me ha gustado de todo. 

Cuando estaba en el instituto vestía de heavy y es cuando conocí a Peter cuando empezamos en Soilwork, él vino a mí y me dijo que iba a montar una banda y que sí quería cantar con él, yo le dije que yo era guitarrista, pero así fue cómo empecé a cantar, nada estaba planeado, pero acabé siendo el cantante y es cuando descubrí que también podía cantar y que podía explorar otros campos en la música.

Hay gente que sólo quiere hacer Black metal todo el tiempo, y yo lo respeto mucho, pero yo necesito explorar otro tipo de cosas. He ido evolucionando con mi voz, no creo que hubiera podido empezar a cantar con TNFO de primeras, he ido cultivando mi voz y eso sembró los cimientos para cantar en esta banda.

 

L.G.: Has mencionado algunas bandas de Heavy clásico como W.A.S.P, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, …, ¿hay algún cantante con el que te gustaría cantar?

B.S. : Me encantaría hacerlo con Stevie Nicks y con Rob Halford.

 

L.G. : Volviendo a la banda, TNFO, ¿Podrías nombrar tu álbum favorito de la banda y describirlo con una sola frase?

B.S. : Uyyyy, a ver, el mejor siempre es el último, jajajjaja. Creo que sin duda éste último álbum es especial, es Rock súper melódico, orgánico y cinematográfico.

 

L.G.: Bueeeenooo, ¡eso es mucho! Björn, el álbum Aeromantic salió en 2020 y obviamente, debido a la pandemia, no ha habido ocasión de ir de gira…El nuevo álbum se llama Aeromantic II…, ¿Podemos considerarlo como una segunda parte del álbum Aeromantic o es algo totalmente diferente?

B.S. : Efectivamente, yo creo que es algo que sigue en el punto donde lo dejamos. Nosotros no planeábamos hacer un Aeromantic II, pero tuvimos que parar el tour cuando la pandemia empezó y volvernos a casa, así que tuvimos la sensación de que no habíamos acabado el trabajo, no podíamos seguir de gira, así que, claro, estábamos interesados en hacer otro álbum, pero a su vez queríamos llevarnos el Aeromantic con nosotros, pues no habíamos acabado con él emocionalmente. Estábamos muy emocionados y orgullosos de él.

 

 

L.G. : ¿Vais a ir de gira éste año?

B.S. : Hay algunos conciertos planeados, pero no sé qué es lo que va a pasar. 

 

L.G.: ¿Y qué podemos esperar de éste nuevo álbum Aeromantic II?

B.S. : Éste álbum tiene el sonido más ochentero de todos los que hemos hecho. Hemos trabajado mucho con los teclados, John Lönnmyr, el teclista, ha sido la cabeza pensante y está todo muy inspirado en bandas sonoras de los `80, es un álbum muy cinematográfico, algo que la gente sentirá cuando lo escuchen, es como estar en el cine.

 

L.G. : ¡Estoy deseando escucharlo! Y ahora…, Björn, dame un segundo que quiero enseñarte algo….(me cambio de ropa en 10 segundos y me pongo de pie)…

Vale, ahora quiero que me mires, mira mis vaqueros blancos, mira mi top de leopardo y mira mi pelo pelirrojo….¿Te recuerda a algo?

B.S. : Ohhhh, sí, el vídeo musical de White Jeans, jajajajajajja

 

L.G: Me encanta ese vídeo y esa canción, creo que es fabulosa, pero tengo mucha curiosidad sobre la historia detrás de ese tema, ¿Me podrías contar?

B.S.: Ese vídeo está grabado en mi antiguo apartamento, justo antes de mudarme, así que fue una buena manera de despedirme de él. También tenía allí a mi amigo que vivía muy cerca, el tío que aparece en el vídeo. Él es actor, cómico y ha aparecido en la televisión sueca en el programa “Got Talent”, es un personaje muy raro, también es bailarín. Nos hicimos muy amigos y empezamos a pasar muchos ratos juntos y no sé por qué yo me le imaginaba actuando como un Drag Queen en el vídeo y luego ya no sé cómo empezamos a inventarnos la historia de que era un hombre mayor que había dejado su carrera como Drag Queen porque no estaba aceptado en esos tiempos cuando era joven y que, como ahora está más aceptado, él pensaba que éste era el momento de volver a ello por última vez. Es una historia muy bonita y espero que la gente no se burle de ese tipo de cosas pues esto que hemos hecho es una especie de tributo a no tener miedo a ser quien realmente eres.

 

L.G.: ¡Es alucinante!

Bueno, Björn, para acabar la entrevista, tengo el cuestionario Rock Angels para tí.

3. Festival o sala pequeña:  Festival 

4. Si no fueras cantante, ¿Qué profesión tendrías?  Cuando era pequeño mi plan era ser jugador profesional de hockey en América, pero luego empecé con la guitarra y la música…. Aunque me hubiera gustado lo otro o también ser enfermero.

5. ¿Sweden Rock, Wacken o Hellfest? Diría que Sweden Rock, está cerca de casa y no son muchas horas de viaje.

6. El disco que más te ha influenciado en tu vida. Ésta es difícil. Pero hay un disco que escuché sin parar durante unos años y es el Storm of the Light´s Bane de la banda Dissection.

7. ¿Quién es la persona más maja que has conocido en la industria del metal? Wowwww, qué difícil. Yo creo que ha sido Steve Di Giorgio, es uno de mis grandes amigos, es genial, todos los miembros de Testament lo son.

8. Ésta es un poco diferente: ¿Qué te gusta hacer en tu tiempo libre? Me gusta el tema retro y las antigüedades, muebles, ir a mercadillos….

9. ¿Köttbullar (albóndigas típicas de Suecia), sushi o pizza? Buaahhhhh, es que son tres de mis comidas favoritas. ¡Las tres, jajaja!

10. La última, ¿White jeans (vaqueros blancos, como en la canción) o blue jeans (vaqueros azules)? Jajajajajajajaj
    Jajajajajaja, ¡aqueros azules! Los vaqueros blancos se ensucian muy fácilmente, jajajaja. Una vez fui a una isla cuando tenía 17 años y llevaba unos vaqueros blancos, es la única vez que los he llevado, estaba bastante borracho y me quedé dormido en un prado lleno de flores amarillas, así que luego tenía todos los pantalones amarillos, jajajajajajjaja.

 

L.G.: Björn, éste el final de nuestra entrevista. Te deseo mucha suerte con tu nuevo álbum, en tu vida y en todo. Ha sido realmente un placer hablar contigo.

Yesterday I had the pleasure to interview Björn Strid, singer of The Night Flight Orchestra, band that has become in a short time one of my top 10 thanks to their different style and their great peculiarities within melodic hard rock/AOR. Here is our conversation:

 

Laura Grosskopf (L.G.): Hi Björn, how are you?

Björn Strid (B.S.): Hi!!!! Well, how are you?

L.G.: Very well, but it’s very hot here right now…

B.S.: Yes, I’ve seen on the news that you have a heat wave in Spain and Italy. How hot is it there? 45°C?

L.G.: Well here in the north not so much, about 40, but as I’m on vacation it’s great, I’m not going to mplain, hahahahahahaha. In Sweden I guess you don’t have a heat wave, do you? hahahaha

B.S.: No, hahahahahahaha, here it is not so hot, fortunately.

 

L.G.: Well, Björn, it’s a great pleasure to talk to you and I must confess that I know your band, The Night Flight Orchestra, since a few years ago, and right now I’m a big fan of yours, I think what you do is different. For that reason, I’m curious about some aspects of the band, for example, where did you get the idea for the name of the band?

B.S: Well, it all started when David Andersson, the guitar player, who also works with me in Soilwork, we met in 2007. We were really into 70’s and 80’s rock, Rock, Pop and also the aesthetics of those decades. We started the tour in North America and we would end up sitting together listening to music, looking out the window, especially at night and we realized that it started to be something special that we liked to do, listen to music and have a few drinks while traveling, especially when we were flying at night while the rest of the world was asleep. It became something very special for us, something very emotional and that’s where the name for the band The Night Flight Orchestra came from.

 

L.G: What a great idea! I’m also very curious about the kind of clothes, costumes, that you wear in the concerts, in the videos. I think it’s different… what are you trying to symbolize with it?

B.S.: Very good question! I almost don’t even know where it came from. It might seem weird, but I just wanted to «create» that AOR style in a generic way with that kind of hat/ beret and I think it all started with David Bickler, the singer of Survivor, who was wearing one of those hats and I said to David: I want to wear a beret too, it started as a joke, but in the end I decided that I wanted to create my character around it, with aviator glasses, with cool outfits in different colors. And then when the girls joined it became more of a concept, something to do with airlines, romanticizing flying and everything linked to it. Nowadays I even wear a golden cape, which is part of the show and it’s a lot of fun, quite a show.

 

L.G.: Björn, The Night Flight Orchestra is not your only band, you also sing in Soilwork, which one would you consider your main band and which one your secondary one?

B.S. : It’s 50 /50 . I started in Soilwork when I was 17-18 years old, it’s like my little baby, although in The Night Flight Orchestra we’ve been together for 10 years now and it’s not something new, but I think I channel all my influences through the two bands. Besides singing, I also play guitar in another band with my girlfriend.

I think I bring everything together with both bands, with Soilwork and with TNFO (The Night Flight Orchestra), it’s very difficult for me to choose one. TNFO is kind of softer and more fun in some ways, but Soilwork also offers me a lot emotionally. I’m very emotionally connected to both bands, it’s hard to explain, they are two different musical expressions. I feel very balanced musically with these two bands and also on a personal level.

 

 

L.G. : That’s what you were saying, the two bands have a totally different musical style, we are talking about melodic Rock with TNFO and melodic Death metal with Soilwork…., which of the two styles has been your main influence?

B.S. : I’ve always been into all styles, at the beginning of the 90’s I was collecting 70’s records and at the same time I was very into Black Metal, even though they are almost opposite. I listened to a lot of music as a child, my mother always played music in the car, I loved to go anywhere listening to something, she played a lot of Eurrythmics, the typical ’80s songs…, but then I also discovered Heavy metal, the Number of the Beast when I was 7 years old, W.A.S.P, Judas Priest…, but I’ve always liked everything. 

When I was in high school I wore heavy metal and that’s when I met Peter when we started Soilwork, he came to me and told me that he was going to start a band and that I wanted to sing with him, I told him that I was a guitarist, but that’s how I started singing, nothing was planned, but I ended up being the singer and that’s when I discovered that I could also sing and that I could explore other fields in music.

There are people who just want to do Black metal all the time, and I respect that a lot, but I need to explore other kinds of things. I’ve been evolving with my voice, I don’t think I could have started singing with TNFO right away, I’ve been cultivating my voice and that laid the foundation to sing in this band.

 

L.G.: You mentioned some classic heavy bands like W.A.S.P., Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, …, is there any singer you would like to sing with?

B.S.  : I would love to do it with Stevie Nicks and Rob Halford

 

LG. : Going back to the band, TNFO, could you name your favorite album of the band and describe it in one sentence?
B.S. : Uyyyy, let’s see, the best one is always the last one, hahahahaha. I think this last album is definitely special, it’s super melodic, organic and cinematic rock.

 

L.G.: Well, that’s a lot! Björn, the Aeromantic album came out in 2020 and obviously, due to the pandemic, there has been no chance to go on tour…The new album is called Aeromantic II…, can we consider it as a second part of the Aeromantic album or is it something totally different?

B.S. : Indeed, I think it’s something that picks up where we left off. We weren’t planning on doing an Aeromantic II, but we had to stop the tour when the pandemic started and go home, so we had the feeling that we hadn’t finished the job, we couldn’t go on touring, so of course we were interested in doing another album, but at the same time we wanted to take Aeromantic with us, because we weren’t finished with it emotionally. We were very excited and proud of it.

 

L.G.. : Are you going on tour this year?

B.S. : There are some concerts planned, but I don’t know what is going to happen. 

 

L.G. : And what can we expect from this new album Aeromantic II?

B.S. : This album has the most eighties sound of all the ones we have done. We have worked a lot with the keyboards, John Lönnmyr, the keyboardist, has been the mastermind and it’s all very inspired by 80’s soundtracks, it’s a very cinematic album, something that people will feel when they listen to it, it’s like being in the cinema.

 

L.G.. : I can’t wait to listen to it! And now…, Björn, give me a second, I want to show you something….(I change my clothes in 10 seconds and stand up)….

Ok, now I want you to look at me, look at my white jeans, look at my leopard top and look at my red hair….does it remind you of anything?

B.S. : Ohhhh, yes, the White Jeans music video, hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

 

L.G : I love that video and that song, I think it’s fabulous, but I’m very curious about the story behind that track, could you tell me?

B.S.: That video is shot in my old apartment, just before I moved out, so it was a nice way to say goodbye to it. I also had my friend there who lived very close by, the guy who appears in the video. He’s an actor, comedian and has appeared on Swedish TV on the show «Got Talent», he’s a very weird character, he’s also a dancer. We became very close friends and we started spending a lot of time together and I don’t know why I imagined him acting as a Drag Queen in the video and then I don’t know how we started to make up the story that he was an older man who had left his Drag Queen career because it was not accepted in those times when he was young and that, as it is more accepted now, he thought this was the time to go back to it for the last time. It’s a very nice story and I hope people don’t make fun of that kind of thing as this thing we’ve done is kind of a tribute to not being afraid to be who you really are.

 

L.G.: It’s amazing!

Well, Björn, to end the interview, I have the Rock Angels questionnaire for you.

   4. 4. If you weren’t a singer, what profession would you have?  When I was a kid my plan was to be a professional field hockey player in America, but then I started playing guitar and music….. Although I would have liked the other or also to be a nurse.
   5. 5. Sweden Rock, Wacken or Hellfest? I would say Sweden Rock, it’s close to home and it’s not a long drive.
   6. 6. The album that has influenced you the most in your life.  This one is difficult. But there is one album that I listened to non-stop for a few years and that is Storm of the Light’s Bane by the band Dissection.
   7. 7. Who is the nicest person you’ve met in the metal industry? Wowwww, that’s a tough one. I think it’s Steve Di Giorgio, he’s one of my great friends, he’s great, all the members of Testament are great.
   8. 8. This one is a bit different: what do you like to do in your spare time?  I like retro stuff and antiques, furniture, going to flea markets….
      9. 9.Köttbullar (Swedish meatballs), sushi or pizza?  Buaahhhhh, they are three of my favorite foods, all three, hahaha!
   9. 10. Last one, white jeans (white jeans, like in the song) or blue jeans (blue jeans)? Hahahahahahahahahaha  hahahahahahahaha, blue jeans! White jeans get dirty very easily, hahahahahaha. I once went to an island when I was 17 and I was wearing white jeans, that’s the only time I’ve ever worn them, I was quite drunk and fell asleep in a meadow full of yellow flowers, so I had all yellow pants afterwards, hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
