Os presentamos a la banda australiana Divine Ascension, que durante este mes de octubre estarán de gira por primera vez en Europa compartiendo cartel con Gloryhammer y Stratovarius. Para todos aquellos amantes del metal progresivo que no hayáis oído nunca hablar de ellos, os recomiendo encarecida y directamente que le echéis una escucha a su nuevo y segundo álbum llamado “Liberator”. Karl Szulik, guitarrista de la banda, nos habla a continuación de lo que nos van a ofrecer durante las 5 fechas que harán en España.
Hola Karl, gracias por tu tiempo con nosotros y, ¡bienvenido a Europa por primera vez! Debe ser muy emocionante para vosotros estar de gira con una banda como Stratovarius.
Karl – ¡”G’Day” Yadira! Es extremadamente emocionante para nosotros, especialmente para los que hemos crecido escuchando a Stratovarius.
Empecemos describiendo un poco a Divine Ascension para aquellos que estén pensando en venir a veros aquí en España, donde haréis 5 fechas. ¿Qué tipo de música vais a ofrecernos?
Divine Ascension es una banda australiana de metal progresivo/power que traerá energía y sobretodo mucha diversión, ¡así como un poquito de nuestra Australia a los próximos shows en España! ¡Nuestra música está repleta de melodías pegadizas y potentes ritmos que harán que queráis mover la cabeza sin parar!
El año pasado sacasteis vuestro segundo disco llamado “Liberator”. Tengo que decir que la primera cosa que me llamó la atención de la banda en general siempre fue el gran contraste entre esos ritmos tan potentes y la preciosa y melódica voz de Jennifer, aun así siempre sin perder ese sonido tan progresivo. ¿Qué buscabais exactamente cuándo empezasteis con la idea de grabar un segundo disco?
¡Eso es exactamente lo que buscábamos! ¡Jaja! Para avanzar en todos los sentidos respecto al primer álbum “As The Truth Appears”, quisimos añadir ritmos más pesados y al mismo tiempo también quisimos que la voz fuera más melódica y pegadiza.
¿Crees que el hecho ser una banda con vocalista femenina ayuda a la hora de tocar temas más delicados de la vida? En “Liberator” podemos encontrar letras que nos hablan de tomar decisiones quizás un poco duras pero todo para dejar de sufrir, y también quizás encontramos temas con los que una mujer se puede sentir más identificada. Sin ir más lejos, en el videoclip de la canción “Liberator” vemos una historia que habla de la violencia de género.
Ser una banda con cantante femenina nos diferencia de cualquier otra banda de metal con cantante masculino. Nos suelen encasillar o nos suelen considerar a menudo como otra banda más copia de Nightwish. De todas maneras, tener una cantante femenina nos permite acercarnos más a ese tipo de temas como puede ser la violencia de género y también de una manera diferente, como en “Liberator”. Creo que al público también le atrae o le llama la atención la voz de Jen porque su estilo no es tan operístico o lírico como la mayoría del resto de bandas con cantantes femeninas.
Cuéntanos un poco sobre ti. ¿Cuándo empezaste a tocar la guitarra y por qué? ¿Puedes contarnos un poco acerca de tus influencias?
Empecé a querer tocar la guitarra desde que era muy joven, ¡pero me tomó mucho tiempo convencer a mis padres hasta que me compraron una guitarra! ¡Jaja! Una vez que empecé a aprender, mi profesor de guitarra me enseñó muchísimos y muy diferentes estilos de música, así como muchos guitarristas y músicos increíbles. Eso hizo que mi mente se abriera a muchísimas posibilidades a la hora de tocar así que despertó muchísimo interés en mí. Mis mayores influencias que son las que aún conservo incluirían a Mattias IA Eklundh, Michael Romeo y Peter Wichers.
¿Todos los miembros de la banda tenéis los mismos gustos musicales o sois una especie de mezcla de diferentes estilos?
Todos en la banda tenemos gustos musicales parecidos, aunque como puedes imaginar algunos tienen preferencias diferentes como puede ser el rockabilly, el jazz fusión, bandas sonoras, etc. ¡Lo genial de trabajar en una banda con 5 personas que tienen distintos gustos musicales es que siempre tenemos muchísimas opciones a la hora de escuchar y descubrir nueva música!
¿Cómo lo hacéis a la hora de componer? ¿Trabajáis juntos o cada uno trae sus propias ideas y simplemente hacéis que funcione?
Es una mezcla de las dos cosas. A veces alguien puede venir con una composición entera y trabajamos juntos a la hora de pulirla. Otras veces tenemos una melodía simple de base y entre todos vamos construyendo. Siempre varía, aunque los 5 somos compositores y todos contribuimos al sonido de Divine Ascension, así que eso es lo que nos hace relativamente únicos.
¿Qué opinas acerca de la actual situación de la industria musical? Todos sabemos que no sólo el hecho de vender discos se ha vuelto un trabajo muy difícil, sino también otros temas como el salir de gira sin ningún tipo de ayuda económica muchas veces. ¿Qué te hace seguir sin rendirte?
Ha habido un gran cambio en la industria con la llegada de la venta online de música. Vender cds físicos puede llegar a ser muy difícil, pero hemos descubierto que mucha gente, especialmente las personas que escuchan metal, todavía siguen queriendo o les suele gustar más tener copias físicas de un álbum porque les gusta ver el diseño y el trabajo del libreto y muchas veces poder leer la letra de las canciones más detenidamente.
¡Nuestra motivación principal es pasarlo bien! Nos encanta crear y tocar juntos, y mucha gente nos comenta el aura de diversión que estamos trayendo a los escenarios durante este tour. ¡Simplemente somos nosotros disfrutando de cada momento! Otra de los aspectos geniales de este tour europeo con Stratovarius es conocer a tanta gente tan genial. ¡Los fans son tan simpáticos y les encanta nuestra música tanto como a nosotros nos gusta tocarla!
Ahora que habéis conseguido salir de Australia, ¿qué se siente al llevar vuestra música a países desconocidos para vosotros y a gente que no os ha visto nunca?
¡Es increíble! Tenemos fans que nos dicen que nuestra música realmente les ha llegado y que es lo que les hace levantarse cada mañana y vivir la vida. Para nosotros es increíble tener unas respuestas como esas. Una de las mejores cosas de este tour para nosotros está siendo salir a la mesa de merchandising después de tocar y conocer y poder hablar con los fans. ¡Todos están siendo tan simpáticos y nos están apoyando tanto, es increíble!
¿Tenéis planes en mente después de este tour europeo?
Estamos planeando en trabajar ya en un tercer álbum. Nos gustaría empezar a trabajar duro componiendo y pre-produciéndolo para poder empezar a grabarlo a principios del año que viene. De todas maneras, ¡un pequeño descanso cuando volvamos a Australia no estará de más!
¿Te gustaría añadir algo respecto a vuestra inminente visita a España y a todos aquellos que os vayan a ver por primera vez (¡esperemos que no la última!)?
Esperamos conocer a todos y cada uno después de nuestro concierto y poder decirles “G´Day!”. Hi Karl, thanks for sharing some time with us and welcome to Europe for the first time! Must be exciting for you guys to do such a huge tour with such a great band like Stratovarius.
G’day Yadira!! It is extremely exciting for us especially seeing as we grew up listening to Stratovarius.
Let’s start by defining Divine Ascension for everyone that is thinking about coming to see you guys specially here in Spain, where you’ll be for 5 dates. What kind of music/style will you offer?
Divine Ascension is a prog/power band from Australia that will bring loads of energy and fun as well as our own little Australian edge to the shows in Spain! Our music is full of catchy melodies and heavy rhythms to bang your head to!
You got your second album out called “Liberator” released last year. I have to say that the first thing that caught my attention the most from the band in general was the amazing contrast between the powerful rythms and Jennifer’s amazing melodical voice, never losing that progressive sound. What were you looking for when you first thought about recording this new album?
That was exactly what we wanted to do! Haha! Moving forward from our debut álbum As The Truth Appears, we wanted to introduce more heavy and driving rhythm sections, while pushing the vocals to be more melodic and catchy.
Do you think that being a female-fronted band kind of helps when speaking about tough issues in life? In “Liberator” we can find lyrics that speak about letting it go instead of suffering and stories that might make a woman feel pretty identified with. Also the videoclip of Liberator tells a story about domestic abuse.
Being in a female-fronted band separates us from every other male fronted metal band. We often get put into categories where everyone thinks we are just another Nightwish copy band. However, having a female singer allows us to approach topics such as domestic abuse like in Liberator in a different way. I think people are also drawn to Jen’s voice as it is not a common operatic style of singing like in so many other female-fronted bands.
Tell us a bit about you. When did you start playing guitar and why did you decide to start playing? Can you tell us about your biggest influences?
I wanted to play the guitar from a very young age, however it took quite a while to convince my parents to buy me a guitar! Haha! Once I had begun learning, I was introduced to many different styles of music and amazing guitarists and musicians by my guitar teacher. It opened my mind to so many possibilities with the instrument and my interest sparked and I took off learning! Some of the biggest influences I still have to date that I grew up with include Mattias IA Eklundh, Michael Romeo and Peter Wichers.
Do you all in the band have same taste in music or are you just a mix of different styles?
Everyone in the band has similar tastes in music, but as you would expect some people have preferences to other genre’s such as rockabilly, jazz fusión, movie scores, etc. The great thing about working in a band with 5 people who have different tastes in music, is that there is always an abundance of new music to listen to or check out!
How do yo do when writing songs, do you all write together or does everyone bring their own ideas and you just make it work?
It is a mixture of both. Sometimes someone will come into the band with a full piece of music and we work on it together. Other times we have a simple melody and build it as a group. It always varies. But all 5 people in the band are music writers and contribute to the DA sound, which I think makes it quite unique.
What do you think about the current music industry? We all know that not only selling albums has became a hard work, but also touring without any kind of economical support. What does make you go on and not give up?
There has been quite a shift in the music industry with the introduction of online music sales. Selling physical records can be quite difficult. But we have found that a lot of people who listen to metal still like to own the physical copies of an álbum as they enjoy looking at the artwork and delving deep into the lyrics of each song.
The motivation for us is purely enjoyment! We absolutely love creating and playing music together and many people have commented on the aura of enjoyment we bring to the stage this tour. It is us enjoying every moment! The other great thing on this European tour with Stratovarius is meeting all the cool people. The fans are so friendly and enjoy our music as much as we enjoy playing it!
Now that you guys made it out of Australia, how does it feel to bring your music to unknown countries and to people that will be seeing you for the first time?
It feels unbelievable! We have had fans say to us that our music has touched him and that it makes him want to get up in the morning and live his life. To us, it is amazing to receive feedback like this. One of the best parts of this tour for us has been hanging out at the merch table after our set and chatting with the fans. Everyone has been so friendly and supportive, it is incredible!
Do you have any next plans in mind after the european tour?
We are planning on working on álbum 3. We would like to begin working hard on writing and the pre-production of álbum 3 so we can begin recording early next year. However, a short break when we return to Australia after the tour will not be unappreciated. 😀
Is there anything you would like to add regarding your first visit to Spain and the ones who will see you guys for the first time (hopefully not last!)?
We hope to meet each and every fan after our set and say “G’day!” So if you enjoy the music we play on stage and are reading this, make sure you come up to us and say hello. Secondly, we hope everyone has a fantastic night! Gloryhammer and Stratovarius are amazing bands and we are looking forward to rocking out with everyone in Spain.
