Parece quedar lejos aquel año en que AXXIS editaran un espléndido álbum titulado Kingdom of The Night y que se convirtió en el disco debut más vendido de la historia de Alemania hasta ese momento y que hubiera cosechado una banda de Hard Rock. Desde entonces, desde aquel fulgurante 1989 en la carrera de los teutones, éstos han ido desgranando piezas que atesoran una enorme cantidad de hermosas melodías, rotundos pasajes que trascienden los cánones del sonido clásico del heavy metal para adentrarse en terrenos melódicos donde las letras y los teclados juegan un papel esencial y definitorio en la identidad de AXXIS. Son ya doce discos de estudio con tema originales a los que se han de sumar un disco de versiones, tres álbumes recopilatorios y dos álbumes en vivo, amén de casi una veintena de singles editados con diversas casas discográficas. Pero fue a partir del 2011 que AXXIS asumió pleno control en sus producciones gracias a la creación de su propio Estudio de Grabación – SoundWorxx – y de la Productora y Sello Discográfico Phonotraxx, que comparte con su también colega de banda Harry Oellers. Los alemanes visitarán en breve nuestro país formando parte del cartel del Hell On Middle-Earth Fest (H.O.M) que se celebrará en Burgos los próximos 4 y 5 de Julio. Una cita que resultará del todo ineludible para los seguidores de una banda que está en plena celebración de sus veinticinco años de permanencia en la escena. Con un sonido caracterizado por ir a caballo entre el heavy metal clásico, el hard rock melódico y ramalazos de power metal, los de Westfalia se han atrevido con un trabajo revisionista pero a la vez innovador, cuidando hasta el más mínimo detalle en una edición doble cuya novedad es que se puede adquirir por separado. ¿Dos álbumes o un álbum doble? Es como una incógnita que su frontman y líder principal, el vocalista Bernhard Weiss, nos revelará en esta entrevista que le hemos realizado desde Rockangels
AXXIS sois una banda con 25 años a vuestras espaldas. Era lógico preparar un volumen para celebrarlo pero decidisteis hacer dos. Vuestro Kingdom of The Night II representa un álbum celebración pero también un álbum de revisión de todo lo hecho hasta ahora, ¿me equivoco?
Bernhard Weiss: Cuando comenzamos a escribir el álbum sabíamos que tendríamos que celebrar nuestros veinticinco años de carrera en 2014. Queríamos hacer algo especial y teníamos en mente un trabajo que contuviera el espíritu del Kingdom of the Night, nuestro primer lanzamiento de 1989. Tras tener listos un buen número de temas, algunos muy diferentes entre sí, vimos claramente que era impracticable ponerlos a todos en un solo álbum por lo que, finalmente, decidimos dividirlos en dos ediciones, la negra y la blanca, cada una de las cuales representaría un lado del carácter de AXXIS y, por tanto, las quisimos lanzar por separado.
Pero en verdad ambos discos, el negro y el blanco, parecen complementarios y no antagónicos. Percibo letras más oscuras y duras en el primero y más sentimentales en el segundo. Incluso, la doble versión de un tema con el mismo título “Mary married a monster” simboliza, en cierto modo, la doble perspectiva de un mismo asunto muy vigente, el maltrato de género ¿Por qué quisisteis dar esa doble visión?
BW: Este tema habla del asunto de la violencia hacia las mujeres dentro de las relaciones de pareja. Habíamos tenido esa experiencia dentro de nuestro propio círculo de amigos y conocidos y por ello quisimos reflejar el conflicto desde los dos ángulos: por una parte, nuestra versión, que es la perspectiva de quien lo vive como un observador y que es la contenida en el Black Album y, por otra parte, la de la persona que lo tolera resistiéndose a escapar de esa realidad e, incluso, culpándose a sí misma por las conductas del hombre violento y ésta es la que aparece en el White Album.
En las letras de la canción que da título al álbum y que es también el título del single de vuestro LP debut de 1989 (Kingdom of The Night), detecto un cambio de perspectiva vital y una reafirmación como banda, también como individuos. Al principio, eran los sueños de triunfar como roqueros y ahora se trata de mantener los logros a toda costa siendo fieles a esa premisa ¿Os queda algo por conquistar en “el reino de la noche”, si me permites la metáfora?
BW: Hay todavía tal cantidad de anhelos, ideas y sueños pendientes que una sola vida no sería suficiente para cumplirlos todos. Nuestros deseos son como los descubrimientos de la Astronomía, si me permites la comparación: en el mismo momento en que un misterio se desvela surgen otros dos más. Con AXXIS pasa eso: cuando hemos conseguido una meta ya estamos enfocados en otra.
Se nota que habéis apostado por un producto selecto, con una producción en la que tú, Bernhard, has estado totalmente volcado en tu propio estudio lanzándolo además con tu propio sello discográfico ¿Es mayor la satisfacción en este caso o asumir tanta responsabilidad tiene un lado negativo?
BW: Siempre es una enorme cantidad de trabajo que tanto Harry como yo tenemos que hacer para conseguir el producto final. Si, es una gran responsabilidad, pero al mismo tiempo, tenemos control total en lo concerniente al concepto “Axxis”. Y esa es la parte buena. Pero claro, estamos asumiendo también todos los riesgos que se derivan de ello. Cuando trabajamos en el lanzamiento de una nueva banda (porque, lógicamente, trabajamos para otros grupos en nuestro sello discográfico) es imposible predecir el nivel de éxito de un álbum. En el peor de los casos, lo que podría ocurrir es que hubiésemos invertido una buena cantidad de dinero en la promoción y que al final a nadie le agrade ese material. Esa es la parte de riesgo que asumimos.
Has compuesto un tema en alemán, Lass dich gehen. ¿AXXIS quería de este modo reivindicar su lengua materna? Dinos algo sobre la letra. ¿Os atreverías con un disco totalmente en alemán?
BW: La verdad, un disco cantado totalmente en alemán no tendría sentido. El asunto es que esto lo están haciendo bandas que tocan estilos muy alejados del de AXXIS. Pero, en ocasiones tengo letras escritas en alemán que me gustan tal y como están así que si decidimos ponerles música al final hemos compuesto un tema aislado que encaja en un álbum en inglés. El significado de Lass dich gehn es que “te dejes ir”, te desinhibas, que trates de estar en éxtasis y volverte loco, no parar.
Quisiste honrar la memoria de los 21 jóvenes fallecidos en la Love Parade con el tema 21 Crosses. Nombrarlos uno a uno es una manera de mantener viva su memoria ¿acaso no resulta doloroso hacerlo? ¿Algún familiar se ha puesto en contacto contigo para agradecerte este gesto?
BW: Estamos en contacto con algunos de los supervivientes de la tragedia. De hecho, nos invitaron a tocar esta canción en la ceremonia de conmemoración que se celebrará el 24 de Julio en Duisburg, este año. Y si, es duro y doloroso pero es algo que sucedió en nuestra zona y consideramos que es un deber moral por nuestra parte recordar las circunstancias de aquel fatídico día.
Las giras son la mejor manera de promocionar un nuevo trabajo y vosotros empezasteis a girar a finales de marzo con el Kingdom of the Night II ¿Cómo está yendo el tour hasta la fecha? ¿Habrá nuevas incorporaciones a las 26 citas ya programadas?
BW: Bien, se están sumando algunas citas más como, por ejemplo, el Full Metal Cruise del próximo año. Y ya estamos a las puertas del mes de Julio así que ahí estaremos por España donde nos encantará veros a los fans.
Habría sido deseable la presencia de AXXIS en algún otro festival en nuestro territorio o incluso un par de conciertos en las capitales principales. ¿Por qué solo una cita en nuestro país (Burgos)? ¿Ha sido difícil concertar otras localizaciones?
BW: Totalmente de acuerdo contigo. Pero bien, nuestra agencia de Management está negociando nuevas fechas para otoño de este año en algunas ciudades extranjeras así que esperemos que España esté entre ellas. Y si, dices bien al afirmar que la mejor manera de promocionar un álbum es llevarlo a conciertos en vivo.
Me he fijado que en la Wikipedia en castellano la información sobre AXXIS es mucho más extensa que la que hay disponible en lengua inglesa ¿No te resulta curioso? ¿No querrá eso decir que en España gozáis de una numerosa cantera de fans que os está esperando con los brazos abiertos?
BW: ¿De veras? No tenía ni idea. Cierto, tenemos muchos fans en España y en Latino America pero no parece que haya muchos promotores de la zona interesados en contratar a AXXIS. Tengo que decir que los fans españoles son los más entusiastas durante los conciertos en vivo que yo haya visto jamás. Es fantástico salir a tocar cuando oyes que la audiencia se pone a cantar ya en el mismísimo momento en que suenan los acordes de la intro del concierto.
Tenéis un estupendo club de fans en Alemania (Sixxa) y en España está la página de Facebook ¿Cómo es el contacto con los fans a través de las redes sociales? ¿Os implicáis personalmente o es algo que dejáis en manos de un tercero?
BW: Normalmente somos nosotros quienes estamos en contacto personal con nuestros fans. Pero en cuestiones como la firma de autógrafos y cosas así dejamos que sea el propio club de fans quien se encargue de enviarlos.
Los vinilos, afortunadamente, están recuperando mercado. ¿Lo habéis notado también en la venta de vuestro disco en ese formato?
BW: Parece que hay ahora más gente interesada en los vinilos pero todavía la mayoría sigue comprando Cds. En un futuro todo estará canalizado en sitios como Spotify y otros similares, de modo que ya no tendrás nada físico entre tus manos. Creo que sigue existiendo gente que necesita tener algo en las manos donde poder obtener información como las letras de las canciones o mirar ciertas imágenes mientras está escuchando la música. Puede que esa sea la razón por la que el Vinilo sigue siendo popular.
Tú has sido siempre el autor de las letras. Te has planteado delegar en otros miembros de la banda esta tarea o tu inspiración es tan prolífica que siempre tienes ideas para componer?
BW: Bueno, los autores de todos los temas somos el teclista, Harry Oellers, y yo. En nuestro anterior álbum de estudio, por ejemplo (se refiere a Utopia, 2009), hay un tema compuesto por la totalidad de la banda y otros dos cuyas letras fueron escritas por nuestro bajista, Rob Schumaker. Cuando a Harry y a mi nos gusta una canción ambos convenimos en tomarla para nuestro álbum. Pero a veces no es fácil averiguar de qué estamos hechos Axxis o qué tipo de temas podemos necesitar.
Háblanos de tus compañeros de banda. Tras tantos cambios de formación a lo largo de estos 25 años ¿Ves ahora una consolidación definitiva de AXXIS o forma parte del negocio asumir que los cambios son necesarios o inevitables?
BW: La contribución de Harry es de un cincuenta por ciento. No solo en lo concerniente a las composiciones y letras, sino en lo relativo a la producción, gestión discográfica y lanzamiento. Cada parte de Axxis como empresa está llevada a partes iguales por Harry y por mí. En lo que respecta a nuestra formación actual me es imposible ver cómo será en el futuro. A veces alguno de nuestros miembros tiene otro foco de interés en su carrera musical y nosotros no podemos evitarlo así que si tienen que marchar lo harán.
Bernhard, apuesto a que eres un hombre dedicado al cien por cien a la banda y a tu estudio de grabación pero debe haber cosas fuera del terreno musical que también te agrade hacer. ¿Podrías comentar a tus fans y lectores si tienes otros hobbies y cómo sueles pasar tu tiempo libre mientras estas de gira o en casa?
BW: Me encanta ir en bicicleta y hacer barbacoas, todo tipo de juegos y también hacer películas.
Eres un cantante versátil así que debes haber tenido ofertas para colaborar con otros artistas. ¿Con qué bandas te agradaría trabajar en un futuro? Y a propósito ¿tienes otros proyectos musicales al margen de Axxis?
BW: No tengo otros proyectos musicales a parte de AXXIS. Siempre estoy totalmente concentrado en esta banda. Pero si te he de decir, me encantaría poder cantar un día junto a los Queen ocupando el lugar de Freddy Mercury.
¿Hacia dónde se dirige AXXIS en el futuro musicalmente hablando y como equipo humano? Cuéntanos ¿Cómo ves este futuro de aquí a diez años y qué impresiones tienes respecto a los cambios en la industria musical actuales?
BW: La industria musical está experimentando tales cambios durante estos últimos años que no tengo la menor idea de en qué punto todo esto va a ir a parar. Tal y como te dije antes, la carrera musical en el formato físico está llegando a su fin. Los portales de difusión musical en la red están aumentando cada vez más y más. Cuando me fijo en, por ejemplo, Suecia percibo cómo el asunto está llegando a tales cotas de popularidad que ya hay gente muy joven que ni saben lo que es un Cd. Lo mismo está ocurriendo en Estados Unidos. Nosotros como banda y como sello discográfico tenemos que saber cómo encarar esto, y esta es, precisamente, una de las razones por las que tenemos que tener y deseamos tener nuestro propio control en el negocio y en nuestros productos.
Bernhard, te agradecemos enormemente que nos hayas dedicado tu tiempo y aprovecho para desear a AXXIS enorme éxito en el tour y con el nuevo doble álbum.

ENGLISH VERSION
AXXIS is a band with 25 years behind. It was logical then to prepare a volume to celebrate that occasion but you decided to do two of them. Your ”Kingdom of the Night II” represents a celebration but also a musical review of everything done so far by you, am I wrong?
Bernhard Weiss: When we started to write a new album we knew that we would have our 25th band anniversary in 2014. We wanted to do something special and had the idea to write an album in the spirit of “Kingdom of the night”.
Since so many and so various songs were created it quickly became clear that this would not fit on one album. So it finally came to the division into a “Black” and “White” edition, each representing one of the two sides of Axxis and therefore will be released completely separated.
Indeed, both records – the Black Album and the White Album – are complementary but not antagonistic. We perceive darker and harder contents in the first one and more sentimental lyrics and melodies in the second one. Even the double cover of two songs with the same title (Mary married a monster) somehow symbolizes the dual perspective of a same matter which is very much alive nowadays: the gender abuse. Why did you decide to give this double vision – aggression and submission- of that problem?
BW:This song discusses the issue of violence against women in the relationship. We had that experience in our own circle of friends and acquaintances.
The conflict between the perspective of an outsider (our version) on the “Black Edition” and the woman (White Edition) who tolerates that and didn’t want to escape and even almost blame herself for the behavior of the violent man.
In the song that gives title to this album (title that became your debut and greater success with your first LP) I detect a change in life perspective and a reaffirmation as a band, also as individuals. At first, there were dreams to succeed as rockers and now you should keep your achievements at all costs remaining true to that ideal. Has AXXIS got something left to conquer in your particular kingdom of the night if you let me say this, metaphorically?
BW:There are still so many wishes, ideas, dreams left that one life is not enough to fulfill everything. It’s like in the research of –let me say-Astronomy. In the moment when a secret was revealed, two others were born.
It’s very obvious to us, that you have chosen to make a high quality product, with a great production in which you, Bernhard, have been completely focused in your own studio. Even so, this has been released by your own record label. Does all that work mean greater satisfaction or, by the contrary, does this huge responsibility have a downside?
BW:All in all it’ a lots of work Harry and I have to do to realize everything. Great responsibility-yes, but on the other side we have the total control about the whole theme “AXXIS”. That’s the good thing. But we also have to keep the total risk on it. When we release a Newcomer Band (we have also other bands in our Label) you can’t predict the success and in the worst case you have offered a lots of money for promotion and nobody likes the product.
With a theme in German, Lass dich gehen, AXXIS shows to be linked to its mother language. Can you tell us something about the lyrics meaning? Would it be a good idea to record a whole album in German or is that something that only very few bands – like Rammstein – can afford?
BW:A complete album in German is no point of discussion. This is so dominated by Bands that are playing a total different style than Axxis is doing. But sometimes I have some Lyrics that I like really very much and then we are going to write a song for that. The meaning of “Lass dich gehn” is that you get out of yourself, unhibited, be in excstasy, get crazy, don’t stop.
You wanted to honour the memory of the 21 young people who died in the German Love Parade festival with the song 21 Crosses. Naming them, one to one, is a way to keep their memory alive, isn’t that something heart painful to do? Has any relative got in touch with you to thank this gesture?
BW:We are in contact with some of the survivors of the deceased. They invited us to play our Songs “21 Crosses” during the next commemorative ceremonies on the 24th of July in Duisburg. And, yes it’s hard and painfull but it happened in our area and we consider it to our duty to remind the circumstances of that day.
Tours are the best way to advertise a new job and you started yours in late March. How is the touring going so far? Will there be new dates and venues to add to the 26 appointments you have already scheduled in Europe?
BW: Still new dates are coming up like the “Full Metal Cruise” next year. Next is our show in Spain in July.
Why is there only one appointment in Spain (Burgos)? Was it difficult to agree with other locations in our country? Perhaps your presence in another festival would have been desirable, even a pair of concerts in the capital cities, don’t you think so?
BW:I agree. Our agency is working on some more shows in the late autumn of this year in some foreign cities. We also think that representing live is the best thing to promote an album.
I have noticed that the Wikipedia information about AXXIS in Spanish language is much more extensive than what is available in English. Isn’t that curious to you? May be, that would mean that in Spain, may be in Latinamerica, you have a willingly larger pool of fans. So, what are your expectations about us and what do you think about Spanish metalheads and so on…?
BW:Is that true? I didn’t recognize it so far. We have a lots of fans in Spain and Latin America but it seems not so many promoters who are willing to book Axxis there. Spanish fans are during a live show the most enthusiastic people I’ve seen so far. It’s always great to play when the fans started singing directly with the intro-music of the concert.
You have a great fan club in Germany named Sixxa. Also, there is a Spanish Facebook page supported by your local fans from here. How is the contact with your fans through the social networks? Do you keep as a band a personal contact with them or do you have someone else to do it?
BW:Usually we are in personal contact. But all things regarding for example autographs is done by our fanclub.
Vinyl records are becoming a recovering market, thankfully. Have you noticed that in your album sales in that format in spite of CD being still in the top of public preferences? Your album The Big Thrill (1993) became the last vinyl edition released by EMI but now it seems there is a rebirth from the ashes more than twenty years later. Collectors, as sure you are, must congratulate themselves, don’t they?
BW:There are many people who are taking care of Vinyl but still the most are buying CD’s. In future everything will be streamed on spotify and others and you have nothing left in your hand. I think that some people want to hold something where they can get some informations about the band, the lyrics and some pictures while listening to the music. May ne this is one of the reasons that Vinyl is so popular.
You’ve always been the author of the lyrics. Have you ever thought on delegating part of this task to the members of the band or is your inspiration so prolific that you always have ideas for writing? Has any other member co-written any of the songs so far? Would you like to let them do it if they are prompt to?
BW:Authors of everything are usually Harry (the Keyboardist) and me. On the last CD we have some songs written by the whole band and two songs written by our Bassplayer Rob Schomaker. When Harry and I like the song we take it. But it’s not easy to find out what Axxis is made of and what kind of songs it needs.
Tell us something about your band mates. After many line-up changes over the last 25 years, do you finally see a consolidation of AXXIS or, by the contrary, do you assume that moving pieces is part of the business where changes are necessary and unavoidable? Anyway, keyboardist Harry Oelles is still with you since the very beginning, how important is his contribution to the new compositions and band evolution?
BW:Harry contribution is 50%. Songwriting, Production, Labelmanager, Publisher. Every part of the company Axxis is done by him and me. Regarding our Line-up I can’t look into the future. Sometimes one of our Members has different aims for his own career and we don’t want to stop somebody doing this.
Bernhard, I bet you are a hundred per cent dedicated guy to the band and studio tasks but there must be something out of the musical business you love doing as well. Can you please tell your fans and readers if you have other hobbies and how do you spend your free time when touring or being at homeland?
BW:I like biking and barbecue, gaming and filming.
You are a versatile singer and there must be some interesting collaborations with other artists you might have been offered to. Which bands or solo artists would you like to work with in the future? Have you got any other side projects in mind apart from AXXIS?
BW:I don’t have any side-projects near Axxis. I’m always full concentrated on the band. What I like to do is to sing one day together with the band “Queen” instead of Freddy Mercury.
Where is AXXIS going (musically and as a human crew)? How do you see the far future, for example, in ten years time? What kind of feelings do you have about the changes in musical industry that we already know nowadays?
BW:Musical Industry is making such a great change during the last years. I have no idea on which point it will stop. As I said already before: The physical sound carrier is going to it’s end. Streaming Portals are coming up more and more. When I look to Sweden, there it is already so popular that some of the younger people don’t know what a CD is. Same in USA. We have to face that as band and as label and that was one of the reasons to found the label to have a control about whats going on in our business.
