CRIMSON CRY – Waiting for tomorrow (2015)

Crimson Cry – Waiting for Tomorrow

It was 2007, when in the capital of Russia vocalist Alex K. Strangel formed Crimson Cry. After various line-up changes the band now consists of the already mentioned Alex, Pavel Viking (bass), Seva “Powerman” (drums), Vladimir Ardent (guitars) and Alexander Nikolaev, who, after the departure of beautiful Xenia Fox to pursue the career of a classical piano player, will be a full-time keyboardist.

After a lot of work and hard rehearsals, they released the demo entitled “Paradox People” in 2010, that was self-produced by Alex. In the end, in 2015 the band’s first full-length “Waiting for Tomorrow” saw the light of day.

The album was released by Russian label Soyuz. Recorded in the Crimson Cry Studio as well as in the studio of Black Obelisk, and mixed and mastered in Grapow Studios, Slovakia, the album shows off both the level of the composition and the level of the production.

The influence of such bands as Symphony X, Masterplan, Yngwie Malmsteen or Royal Hunt is evident in every minute of the disc.

Full of elaborate and optimistic compositions of the kind that drives crazy the lovers of symphonic power metal, the record contains some true hymns.

The album opens with an energetic and catchy melody of “Waiting for Tomorrow”, only to be followed by one of my favourite songs – “You Need a Hero”.

We relax a bit with “The Prisoners”, on which Pavel is able to show off his bass-playing prowess, and go on to one of the best numbers of the album, “Strangel”, a much more powerful-sounding song, that allowed me to enjoy some really complex drum parts.

The record follows with the marvellous ballad “When I Have Met You”, that mainly consists of the sound of piano and the incredible voice of Alex, but faces the closure with all the other instruments coming in.

We return to more traditional type of neoclassical metal with “Bloody Rain” and its majestic keyboards, and “Phoenix Flight”, where the guitar of Vladimir pleases our ears with its clean and sensual melodies. The same happens with “Fight Till the End”, as its acoustic guitar intro, the keyboards in the pure style of Malmsteen, and the magnificent vocal range of Alex turn it into an epic-scale composition.

“Paradox People”, that gave name to the band’s demo, follows in the vein of that positive and invigorating power metal that I love so much.

The album closes with “Walking Alone” and “Don’t Waste Your Time”, two beautiful and melodic songs – a perfect final touch to the disc.

I recently had a privilege of seeing the band perform live supporting Royal Hunt. Despite the brevity of the performance, I must say that it was very professional, and the band gives off a kind of energy that is on the level of established acts. And the most important is that Crimson Cry is one of those bands, whose musicians enjoy greatly what they do, and it is evident in every second of their music.

For those interested in obtaining the record, you can contact the band via its official website or Facebook profile, and they will send you a CD anywhere.

Crimson Cry has everything to obtain success: musicians playing their instruments with expertise, a front-man with a lot of charisma and a voice full of personality and quality, a lot of passion and hard work. I only hope that the future has the best in store for the band, and soon we’ll be able to enjoy their shows not only in Moscow, but in the whole Europe as well.
