Si tan solo con unas semanas de diferencia disfrutábamos de una banda progresiva como Symphony X, los fans de este género debieron estar de enhorabuena ya que a los pocos días nos visitaban también Circus Maximus. Esta banda noruega llega con un cuarto álbum a sus espaldas y tuvimos una charla con su guitarrista Mats Haugen y con su teclista Lasse Finbråten, quienes nos hablaron de su nuevo disco “Havoc” ya la venta.
- – Hola chicos, bienvenidos y gracias por vuestro tiempo.
Mats: Muchísimas gracias.
- – Visita fugaz pero estoy segura de que cundirá. ¿Como estáis?
Lasse: ¡Muy bien!
Mats: ¡Estamos listos! Hemos estado ensayando durante todo el tour así que… ¡más nos vale sonar bien!
- – ¿Como os presentariais delante de la gente que os va a venir a ver por primera vez?
Mats: Principalmente tocando en vivo, tocando nuevas canciones antes de sacar el nuevo disco. Tocamos seis canciones nuevas, tres de ellas ya han sido lanzadas.
- – Cuatro querrás decir.
Mats: (risas) ¡oh si cuatro! ¡Acabamos de lanzar la última!
- – ¿Como se formó Circus Maximus?
Mats: Eso fue hace muchos años. Once desde que salió el primer disco, pero fue sobre el 2003 o 2004 cuando realmente formamos la banda. Estaba mi hermano a la batería y Michael como vocalista, y posteriormente se unió Glen al bajo. Teníamos a otro teclista por aquel entonces…
Lasse: Desde que nacieron los dos hermanos han tocado juntos.
Mats: Si entonces puede que fuera hace más de once años (risas). Fue hace décadas, soy viejo ahora.
- – Estáis aquí presentando el nuevo disco “Havoc”. He leído magníficas críticas sobre él y también los fans disponen de audios en YouTube como de “Havoc”, “Pages” o “The Weight”. ¿Cual creéis que es la principal diferencia entre “Havoc” y “Nine”? ¿Soy la única que lo encuentra más oscuro?
Mats: En cuanto a las letras, lo es. Puede que musicalmente también.
Lasse: Creo que depende de como los oyentes lo sientan pero no creo que lo sea, aunque he escuchado a mucha gente decir lo mismo.
Mats: Es un poco más oscuro, yo creo que si, quizás es un poco más suave, sobretodo las letras.
- – ¿Escribisteis ya con esas intenciones?
Mats: No, simplemente salió así. No estaba planeado.
- – Tengo que decir que aunque os suelan llamar una banda de “metal progresivo”, en mi opinión tenéis más bien toques de metal melódico.
Mats: Nosotros no inventamos esos nombres (risas), ¡simplemente nos llamamos una banda de rock!
Lasse: La palabra “progresivo” cambia constantemente…
Mats: La palabra “progresivo” en la música ha estado cambiando desde los años 70. Hoy en día hay bandas que hasta se llaman “metal extremo progresivo” porque quizás es un poco más agresivo, pero si miras hacia atrás cuando todo empezó con bandas como Queen, no hay banda que pueda ser más progresiva que ellos. Han escrito las mejores canciones de pop, las mejores canciones de rock….
Lasse: Siempre intentan componer nuevas canciones juntando diferentes estilos para “progresar”, para ir a algún sitio, no para estancarse en el mismo sitio durante 20 años.
- – ¿De donde vienen vuestra influencias personales?
Lasse: Cuando tenía quince, dieciséis años, empecé a escuchar Toto, y esa es probablemente una de mis mayores influencias. Pero me encanta todo lo que tenga que ver con sintetizadores.
Mats: El primer estilo de música del que me enamoré fue el tecno de hecho, creo que tenía doce o trece años. ¿Cierro la puerta? (risas) Pero es cierto, es lo mismo que con la banda, escuchamos de todo, de todo, no hay límites. No escuchamos solo metal, ¡de hecho casi no escuchamos metal! Pero para mi la primera banda de la que me enamoré fue Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Extreme… después por supuesto Dream Theater, Queensrÿche… ¡y música Nintendo!
- – “Havoc” significa caos, desorden. ¿Porque escogisteis ese nombre? ¿Queríais que vuestros fans se sumieran en el caos?
Mats: ¡Es el caos de la diversidad! Creo que es eso y las letras, la diferencia en las letras, los sentimientos de la gente: envidia, amor/odio, rencor, auto destrucción… caos de sentimientos, todo en un álbum.
- – ¿Fue decisión vuestra salir de gira antes de lanzar el disco? ¿Porque?
Mats: ¡Definitivamente no! (risas) El álbum se supone que tenía que salir en Febrero.
Lasse: Si, tuvimos una fiesta de lanzamiento… pero ya sabes… cosas que pasan…
Mats: Íbamos un poco retrasados con la grabación, y el sello discográfico necesitaba también un tiempo para promocionar…
- – ¿Es complicado escoger las canciones nuevas que vais a tocar? ¿Escogéis algunas fijas o vais intentando cambiarlas para ver las reacciones del público?
Lasse: No, probamos casi todas en un concierto secreto en Suecia, que bueno, al final no fue tan secreto.
Mats: Se agotaron las entradas de hecho! (risas)
Lasse: Puede haber algún cambio pero casi siempre tocamos las mismas.
- – Habéis lanzado 4 discos hasta ahora chicos. ¿Cuál es vuestro favorito?
Lasse: ¡El último, siempre!
Mats: ¡Siempre! Por supuesto siempre tienes algunas partes o canciones de las que siempre te sientes orgulloso…
- – ¿Como cuales?
Mats: Hummm…. (se queda pensativo) si… claro.. (risas) Muchas canciones de cada álbum, pero especialmente partes de canciones.
- – ¿Podríais escoger un disco de otra banda que os haya cambiado la vida?
Lasse: Toto – Isolation
Mats: No se ni si puedo contestar… quizás Awake de Dream Theater.
- – He leído que tu Mats escribiste casi todo en este disco.
Mats: Bueno todos contribuimos en la composición.
Lasse: Pero Mats más bien lo junta todo como productor.
Mats: Cuando llevas tanto tiempo tocando juntos, ya sabes de antemano lo que es capaz de hacer cada uno. Casi sabes lo que va a hacer cada uno, pero no tenemos ningún sistema en concreto. Simplemente escribimos y si nos gusta, lo usamos.
Lasse: A veces tienes la melodía pero tienes cinco letras diferentes y tienes que encontrar cual encaja, y a veces tiene una letra muy potente pero tienes que encontrar la música.
- – El año pasado tuvimos aquí en España a Lasse con Ammunition, Michael también ha estado involucrado con The Magnificent… ¿en estos momentos estáis todos comprometidos con Circus Maximus?
Mats: Casi todos tenemos cosas a parte de Circus Maximus.
Lasse: Pero Circus es lo principal ahora mismo, porque todos llevamos aquí más tiempo y no hay otras bandas con las que hayamos tocado durante tanto tiempo, así que personalmente siempre ha sido lo principal.
- – ¿Cuáles son vuestros planes después de las fechas españolas?
Mats: Ir a casa y dormir un poco (risas). Pronto anunciaremos nuevas fechas para este año.
Lasse: Tenemos que hacer mucha promoción, presión por internet…
- – La última pregunta sería de vuestro amigo Mike LePond de Symphony X, he estado hablando con él así que, ahí va: ¿Como ha cambiado el sonido de la banda durante los último 10 años?
Mats y Lasse: (risas)
Lasse: ¡Bueno tendrás que comprar “Havoc” y escucharlo! (risas) ¡Ha “progresado”!
Mats: Ha progresado, si comparas el primer disco con el segundo, el segundo con el tercero… puedes ver que cada uno es diferente al anterior. Creo que nos hemos vuelto un poco más atrevidos, especialmente en vivo, vamos más al grano.

- – Hi guys, welcome and thank you so much for spending some time with us.
Mats: Thank you so much.
- – Short visit but I’m sure it will be fun. How are you feeling today?
Lasse: Very good!
Mats: We’re ready! We’ve been rehearsing the whole tour now so… we better sound good!
- – How would you introduce yourselves to the people that are coming to see you for the first time in Spain?
Mats: First of all by playing live, by playing new songs, they new album won’t get released until Friday, so today we’re playing 6 new songs. We have already released 3 of them.
- – Four now.
Mats: (laughs) oh yeah four! New one came out today!
- – How was Circus Maximus born?
Mats: That was many years ago. Eleven since the first album came out but it was around 2003 or 2004 when we became a complete band. There’s my brother on the drums and Michael as a vocalist, we started playing and then with Glen on bass. We had another keyboard player at that time…
Lasse: Since they were born both brothers have been playing together.
Mats: Yes then maybe it was longer than eleven years ago (laughs). That was ages ago, I’m very old now.
- – You’re here with your brand new album “Havoc”, which is going to be released this week. I’ve seen some wonderful reviews of it already and there also some audios available on youtube like “Havoc”, “Pages” or “The Weight”. What do you think is the main difference between “Havoc” and “Nine”? I think I’m not the only one who finds it darker maybe?
Mats: Lyrically it is. Maybe musically also.
Lasse: I think it’s up to the listeners to feel it but I don’t feel it like it, but I’ve heard lot of people saying the same.
Mats: It is a little bit darker, I think so, it is a little bit more mellow maybe, specially the lyrics.
- – Did you write with those intentions or did it just came up like that?
Mats: No, it just came out that way. It was not planned.
- – I have to say that even if you’re often called a “progressive metal” band, in my opinion you have several touches of melodic metal.
Mats: we don’t invent those names (laughs). We call ouselves a rock band!
Lasse: The word progressive is always changing…
Mats: The word “progressive” in music has been changing since the 70s. There are even bands that call themselves nowadays “extreme progressive metal” because it’s maybe more agressive but if you go back to where it all started, like with bands like Queen, there’s no band that can be more progressive than them. They’ve written all the best pop songs ever, rock songs…
Lasse: They’re always trying to write new songs putting different styles together to progress…to go somewhere… not staying in the same place for 20 years.
- – Where do your personal influences come from?
Lasse: When I was 15-16 I started listening to Toto, that’s probably biggest influences. But I love everything that has to do with sintetizers.
Mats: The first music that I fell in love with was techno actually, I think I was 12-13. Shall I shut the door? (laughs) But it’s true, that’s the thing with the band, we listen to anything, anything, there’s no limits. We don’t listen to just metal, actually we listen to almost no metal! But for me the first band that I fell in love with was Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Extreme… then of course Dream Theater… Queensrÿche… and Nintendo music!!!
- – “Havoc” stands for chaos, disorder… Why did you choose that name? Did you want to bring some chaos to your fans?
Mats: It’s a chaos of diversity! I think it’s that and the lyrics, the difference in the lyrics… the feelings that people have like envy, love/hate, bitterness, self destructiveness…. chaos of feelings, all in an album.
- – Was it your decision to tour before releasing the album? Why?
Mats: Definitely not! (laughs) The album was supposed to be out in February.
Lasse: Yes, we had that huge release party…and you know… things happened…
Mats: We were a little late with the recording, and the record company needed that much time to promote…
- – Is it hard to choose the new songs to play? Did you pick some “fix” ones or do you try to change them during the tour to see the reactions?
Lasse: No, we tried out most of them at a secret gig in Sweden… but it wasn’t that secret actually…
Mats: it was sold out actually! (laughs)
Lasse: There are a couple of changes but usually we play the same ones.
- – You have recorded 4 albums so far guys. Which one would you say it’s your favourite one and why?
Lasse: Always the last one!
Mats: Always! Of course there are some parts and songs that you’re always proud of…
- – Okay like which ones?
Mats: Hummm…. (thinks hard) yeah… sure… (laughs) Several songs from each album, but specially parts of songs…
- – Could you pick an album from another band that changed your life?
Lasse: Toto – Isolation
Mats: I don’t know if I can even answer… I think maybe Awake from Dream Theater.
- – I’ve read that Mats wrote pretty much everything on this album.
Mats: Well we all contribute to the song writing.
Lasse: But Mats does put everything together as a producer.
Mats: When you play together as long as we’ve been, you already know what every person can contribute with. You almost know what each person is going to do, but we don’t have any system. We just write stuff and if it’s cool we use it.
Lasse: Sometimes you have the music but you got 5 lyrics and you try to fit some of them, and sometimes you have strong lyrics and you need to find the music.
- – We could see Lasse on tour with Ammunition last year here in Spain, Michael have been also involved with The Magnificent… Are you all focused on Circus Maximus right now?
Mats: Almost everybody has things to do besides Circus Maximus.
Lasse: But Circus is the main thing right now. Because we’ve all been part of it for the longest time, there’s no other bands that I’ve played with for that long, so personally it’s always been the main stuff.
- – What are your plans after these two gigs in Spain?
Mats: Go home and maybe sleep a little bit (laughs). We have some tour dates that will be announced soon for this year.
Lasse: We have to do lot of promo, internet pushing…
- – The last question is from your buddy Mike LePond from Symphony X, I’ve been speaking to him this evening. Here it goes: How has the band’s sound changed over the last 10 years?
Mats and Lasse: (laughs)
Lasse: Well you have to buy “Havoc” and listen! (laughs) It progressed!
Mats: It progressed, if you compare the first one to the second one, the second to the third… you can hear that every album is different to the previous one. I think we’ve become a little bit more edgy, specially live, more “to the point”.
